The COLDSTORE Compact 8-Bay Surveillance Storage System from Veracity is a NAS disk array specifically designed for sequential surveillance recording. It accepts any make and size of 2.5" SATA HDD (up to 2TB) and supports almost any mix of HDDs.
The COLDSTORE Compact Storage System employs a combination of Linear Array of Idle Disks (LAID) and Veracity's Sequential Filing System (SFS) technologies. HDDs may be added on-the-fly or extracted at any time without affecting the recording of data. Due to the strictly sequential writing pattern, physical location (and extraction) of any particular recording for evidential purposes is simple. This feature allows the HDDs in the array to be easily managed by the end users themselves.
The storage system is highly power efficient. The HDDs that are not in use are automatically switched off. This saves power and dramatically reduces the temperature, vibration, and wear. The system consumes as little as 16W even with a fully populated array of 2TB hard drives.
The system offers high reliability even when using the lowest costs disks available. The combination of Linear Array of Idle Disks (LAID) and Veracity's Sequential Filing System (SFS) technologies helps provide large capacities at very low cost. The system is extremely simple to manage, as disk setup & configuration is entirely automatic. The end-user can add, remove, replace, and even upgrade disks without stopping the recording of data.
Disks are used sequentially, with disks not in use being switched off. This saves power and dramatically reduces the temperature, vibration, and wear. The system uses a mirrored overlapping-pair writing pattern to provide full data redundancy during the critical writing process. However, unlike fully-mirrored RAID1 systems, it does not require twice the number of drives.
Power Efficient Solution
SFS controls the disk read/write heads, moving them across the disk very much like a vinyl record player, virtually eliminating disk vibration. Combining LAID and SFS together with a custom-designed low-power main CPU board results in a disk array that hardly needs any cooling at all. It consumes as little as 16W even with a fully populated 16TB array. Even during times when it may be necessary to run all the drives simultaneously for an extended period (for example, during a mass search process), the system functions with ease consuming only around 25W, which is far more efficient than typical RAID systems. The system uses a 12 VDC, 3A external power supply and an almost silent cooling fan.

Multiple Operating Modes
In addition to the mirrored overlapping-pair mode, COLDSTORE Compact can also operate in single sequential disk mode and sequential mirrored-pair mode (sequential RAID1) as required. These modes of operation benefit from the power-saving and low temperature, vibration, and wear features of LAID and SFS, including simple disk management and instantaneous extraction of evidence.
Integration with Video Recording and Management Systems
COLDSTORE Compact offers a full configuration and management application. Once configured, disks may be removed and extracted at any time without reconfiguration. The system can be directly controlled via a defined network protocol.
