Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED Overview

By B&H Photo's

A smart ultra-wide, the AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED from Nikon blends a desirable broad field of view with a sleek form factor, a bright design, and a sophisticated optical layout. The fast f/1.8 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field. The optical design incorporates both aspherical and extra-low dispersion element to minimize spherical and chromatic aberrations for greater sharpness and clarity. Also, both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Balancing the optical attributes, the lens is also characterized by a Silent Wave Motor that produces fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus capabilities, along with the ability to manually override focus at any time for more selective control.

Ultra wide-angle prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 30mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are used in the optical construction to reduce a variety of chromatic aberrations and color fringing for a high degree of clarity and color neutrality.
Two aspherical elements are featured to control spherical aberrations and distortion in order to produce notable sharpness and resolution.
Nano Crystal and Super Integrated coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. A rear focusing design is also used, where only the rear lens group is moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED Reviews

I'm head over heels in love!

I was looking for a replacement for my 17-35mm f/2.8 lens (which still functions properly but is 17 years old so...). I initially purchased Nikon's 16-35mm f/4 lens thinking the 1 stop loss wouldn't make that much of a difference. Wow-was I ever wrong! The VR wasn't very effective and definitely did NOT make up for the lost stop. After shooting with f/2.8 lenses for so long, f/4 is really dim in low light situations. The corner focus (or lack thereof) and coma were absolutely awful. After much testing I couldn't get side to side sharpness until I stopped down to f/10. Maybe I just got a bad copy but I decided to return that lens (Thank You B+H for the easy return process!) and immediately ordered the 20mm f/1.8 prime. Ahhh...If you could see the smile on my face. This is a beautiful lens! I waited to leave a review until after I put the lens through it's paces on several different work sites. It's bright. The color rendition is awesome. The focus is spot on. It's light weight. And I don't even miss the zoom range (I just step in closer or away a little when I need to). I'd all but forgotten how amazing prime lenses are. Don't hesitate to buy this beauty-it's definitely worth it.

Love this lens! Perfect for shooting reception dancing

I put off purchasing this lens for too long. Now that I have it, it is life-changing when shooting the dance party at wedding receptions. The AF works great and the lens itself is very light. Very happy!

In the past 8 years I've gone through three, yes, three 17-35mm Nikon lenses. And they're not cheap either. I was so disappointed when my third 17-35mm stopped working a few weeks ago, that I decided to go completely with prime lenses, so I picked up this 20mm lens. I've never had issues with Nikon's prime lenses and this 20mm has all the main reasons why I love them: such as corner to corner sharpness, lightweight and beautiful bokeh at f 1.8---As a news photographer I wish I had the convenience of 17-35, but I'm completely done with blurry edges and malfunctioning zoom functions during assignments.

Freaking Awesome!

This lens is fast, sharp, has impressively close minimum focus distance, and fast accurate autofocus. Quality wide perspective with minimal distortion. I can't say enough about how much I love this lens.

It's a wide world.

This review cannot do any better on technical issues than those that came before on this site. Images are crisp and the lens doesn't disappoint. It offers abundant conformance quality. I guess my strong offer of an opinion is to order one from B&H. Yes, the price is good, but the execution of the order is compelling. I live in a remote area for delivery, but they get an order going so fast that it arrives sooner than any other company that i use for consumer stuff. Super fast, and everything just as it should be. Not my first one from here, and I'll be back.

Today is day-one with this lens and I had posted earlier, a photo from my balcony of the Chase building and a nearby church. I am posting the same area by night with this lens. Hand -held, untouched by any photo editor software and straight out of the camera.

My favorite lens period.

This is my favorite lens, it glued to my D850. I shoot landscape photography and have many cameras and lenses. Nothing captures a starburst better than this lens. If your into landscape photography this is a must have lens.

Great for Landscaping , Real estate photography and even close-up photos, Whether you are an amateur or a pro. A must for your camera bag, I don't leave home without it.

I'm considering getting the 16-35f/4. I have the Nikon 24-70, but I'm wondering if the 20mm does much more than the 24mm focal distance. I'm just not sure what lens I should get?
Asked by: Rick
The Angle of View on 20mm is 94° vs 24mm is 84° and 16mm is 107° , if you need wide angle 16-35mm wold be a better choice

question

With this lens, if I shoot a photo with a tall building on the left side and the right side of the photo, will they lean inward like two Towers of Pisa? Im looking for a wide-angle lens to stop this kind of distortion.
Asked by: Ronald M.
This lens will cause a little distortion. Architecture photography usually relies on tilt-shift lenses to avoid such issues.

would this lens or theNikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens be better for landscape timelapses? What is the difference? Or is there another lens that would be better suited for the task? Thank you! DM
Asked by: Dave
I would recommend the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED Lens for todays cameras and time lapse use since it is fully electronic. The Nikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens is better for manual focus and aperture use situations.

question

Will this lens auto-focus with my D3100 camera body?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes. Keep in mind that this is an FX lens. The 20mm field of view will be closer to a 35mm field of view because of the D3100 DX crop sensor). The downside for your setup is that you won't be getting a true ultra-wide image. The upside is that you will be getting the sweet spot of any FX lens; the center.

1) Can I buy in a few payments ? 2) I also need the polarizer.
Asked by: Moshe
I think I saw that B and H has financing. This is a great lens. I have one and it has great optics. Super sharp edge to edge and only shows very slight softening in the corners on my 47 megapixel camera. But what really wins my heart is that it has a really nice starburst which I use all the time in shots looking into the sun where the sun is partly blocked by a tree branch or something. Get a polarizer with a narrow profile so you can stack it with another narrow profile UV filter to keep the lens protected. The outer element comes close to the lens cap so it is easy to nick it taking the lens cap on and off. Both filters will need to be a narrow profile on this lense or you will get venetting.
