Rode SVMX Reviews

Very good sound

I've owned this microphone for several years. The sound is very good and the cutoff and boost controls useful and effective. Both of the windscreens work well. The microphone is solidly built. However, the one I originally purchased developed noise in one channel. Rode promptly replaced it with a new one, which developed a similar problem sometime later. Rode also promptly replaced that one . I was impressed with their responsiveness. The mike has a clever feature that allows you to raise its output gain, the aim being to rely mainly on its high-quality internal preamplifier and to lower the gain of your DSLR's admittedly inferior preamplifier to a minimum. This works well, though with loud sound sources either the microphone or the camera preamplifier clips. As a result, the feature isn't useful. The advertisements for the microphone featured it with the same model of mirrorless DSLR that I own, a Sony A7rii.

Great on camera stereo mic that doesn’t stick out & get in the fisheye view on cameras. Very durable, has option for 3.5mm input incl or purchase selerately 2 mini xlr 3 pin female to 3 pin male cables. (Rode should include the xlr cables also though).

Outstanding, despite a few minor niggles

Audio quality and separation is outstanding. I use it for on-camera audio input for adventure travel. The mini XLR input plugs are hard to find and so I haven't been able to use them, which is annoying. But I just love the quality of sound this mic produces. It can seperate voice even in quite a noisy environment. Natural sound effects come out startlingly bright and clear. The wind shield supplied doesn't do much but the dead rat (supplied) works well in all but the strongest winds. I highly recommend this product.

I love this mic. I use it to record great audio when producing my youtube videos. I have let a friend use it for a podcast and it came out amazing. There is 3 buttons that help you in different situations, the instruction book explains when to use them precisely. It has helped my production value immensely.

Worth every penny! I'd give it 6 stars!

I used the SVM-X to record the ambient sound at a club where I was shooting video last night I mounted it on my Sony PXW-Z150 camcorder and shot footage from 50ft away from the stage. The audio was exactly what I heard at the venue. I've been in the business for 30+ years and I've never had a mic give me such clear, honest audio.

I'm not an audio expert but this is good

My first (and thus far only) use aside from some basic tests was in a concert setting where the volume was extremely high in a small space. I was positive it would be peaking everywhere; instead it seemed to reproduce pretty much exactly what we heard. For my money (a lot of it, admittedly), that's what counts.

Do you supply xlr cables for the microphone ? Need a mini xlr female to xlr male...
Asked by: Anonymous
XLR cables are not supplied with the unit, however we have found the Sound Devices cables work well, and ship as a pair. http://bhpho.to/1z7CxPL In addition on the product page, there are mini XLR to XLR cables in the accessory section under the Adapter category.

question

Is it possible to turn off those LEDs on the operation panel when shooting in dark area?
Asked by: Wei
There is no setting to turn off the lights unfortunately. If it is an issue on set you could cover it momentarily with a piece of gaff tape.

Have you heard of any issues regarding this mic and humidity?
Asked by: jason
No, Rode has not listed any issues relating to humidity. However, the Rode Stereo VideoMic X is not moisture-resistant or waterproof, so you will not want to use it in environments where condensation may build up and get inside of the mic where it can damage the components.

question

Would this be a good choice for the Panasonic GH4?
Asked by: Anonymous
It's a great stereo mic irrespective of the camera you use is with. I haven't used the GH4 so I can't comment on that part of it, but assuming you get a good pre-amp before you go into the camera, I'm sure you'd get an solid sound out of it.I hope that helps.Cheers,Zan

How is the audio quality compared to the Rode ...

How is the audio quality compared to the Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro especially when using not using an XLR cable?
Asked by: Jeff
The audio quality on both mics is very good. Both have a frequency response of 40 Hz to 20 kHz. The Stereo VideoMic X has a higher dynamic range, higher maximum sound pressure level, higher sensitivity and better signal to noise ratio, as well as added onboard features to adjust the sound like a high-pass filter at both 75 and 150 Hz (the Pro has a 75 Hz high-pass filter) and a +6 dB high frequency boost. Audio quality of the VideoMic X is better when using the balanced XLR output than when using the unbalanced 3.5mm output. Both mics can be powered by a 9V battery but the VideoMic X has the advantage of using phantom power from a camera or recorder when using the XLR cable.
