The G-Speed Studio XL 64TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array from G-Technology features a hardware selectable RAID controller to offer capacity and performance for supporting multi-stream HD, 2K, 4K compressed workflows, and more. This array provides 8-bays with each one housing an Enterprise-class 8TB hard drive that can be configured for data transfer rates of up to 1350 MB/s under RAID 0. These drives are preconfigured in RAID 5 which offers 1175 MB/s data transfer rates along with one drive's worth of parity. They can be reconfigured in either RAID 0, 1, 6, 10, 50, and 60. A recommended balance between capacity, performance, and reliability is offered with RAID 50 and 60, which strips data in RAID 0 across multiple sets of either RAID 5 or 6. This drive is also built with Thunderbolt 2 technology that supports the fast transfer rates these drives can offer and allows daisy-chaining to additional Thunderbolt-enabled devices. Included along with the Studio XL are power and Thunderbolt cables.

question
Can this Thunderbolt 2 RAID be compatible with a Thunderbolt 3 if the correct cable is used?
Yes, you won't get TB3 performance, but there is no issue as long as you have the a TB2 to TB3 cable.

question
Has anyone found an elegant solution for transporting these? I have two and would like to carry them onto an airplane (not checked baggage)
As people have mentioned for the Shuttle version, there is a specific Pelican case that was designed for that unit. For the Studio XL, we do not have a specific case, but I would suggest looking at the Pelican range.

question
What is the working noise level of this machine?
A little. You can hear the fan in a silent room. But it's much quieter than the Pegasus. And I don't feel it's a distraction while sound editing.

question
What is the actual storage capacity of the G-Speed Studio XL 64TB when set to Raid 5?
Drive comes preformatted Raid 5. it has 8 x 8 tb drives, raid 5 effectively uses one drive for redundancy, result is approximately 7x8 = 56 tb capacity less a bit of overhead. I can't tell you exactly because I run mine on Raid 6, thus using 2 drives for redundancy etc, so I have about 48 tb net capacity. I'm very satisfied with the unit, plan to buy another one

Is it ok for editing with final cut pro?
This drive with its transfer rates of over 1000MB/s would be ideal for editing in Final Cut.

question
Can this be re-formatted to exFAT to more easily swap between a Mac and Win box?
Yes, it can be formatted for exFAT and used on both Windows, and Mac. Please note that to be used on Windows, you will first need to download, and install the driver. (This is not necessary on Mac OS) The download can be found here: http://bit.ly/1EpHBz7

question
If i purchase two 64 TB drives, can I set up one to back up the other automatically?
You cannot do this through the G-Speed Software Utility Interface, but you are able to do this with Time Machine by setting up a 2 drive back up system.
