Leica D-LUX (Typ 109) overview

  • 1Description

The black Leica D-LUX (Typ 109) Digital Camera is a compact point and shoot camera that is built around a large, 12.8MP 4/3" MOS sensor which allows for greater depth of field control than is possible with smaller-sensor cameras, plus more effective light-gathering ability per pixel. As a result, subjects can be better isolated within the frame and more details are apparent in darker areas of the image with less noise.

The 4/3" 12.8MP sensor provides high-resolution output, and with its bright, optically-stabilized DC Vario-Summilux f/1.7-2.8 lens, as well as an ISO range expandable from 100 to 25600, the D-LUX (Typ 109)'s ability to perform under low-light conditions is further enhanced. Even during sunny days or when shooting with a flash, the effect of the built-in lens's wide apertures is more apparent due to the 17.3 x 13.0mm sensor with regard to depth of field. Either close-up or far-away subjects can be easily separated from their backgrounds that are then rendered with a pleasing blur, making the D-LUX (Typ 109) an excellent choice for subjects ranging from macro, street photography, photojournalism, landscapes, or for whenever a highly-capable compact camera is desired.

For those who wish to capture high-resolution video, the D-LUX (Typ 109) offers NTSC or PAL UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) output at 30p or 24p, which can be saved as easy-to use MP4 files. When lower video resolutions are sufficient, 1080p full HD or standard definition video can be selected instead, and results of any resolution can be played back on the camera's large, sharp 3.0" 921k-dot rear LCD display. During capture, the subject can also be viewed through the camera's 2764k integrated electronic viewfinder.

Stills and video are saved to SD-type cards, up to and including those with SDXC capacities. To help preserve fast performance even while capturing high-resolution still photos or video, high-speed UHS-I SD-type memory cards can be used. While photos and videos can be downloaded from the memory card, Leica has provided additional options for sharing content taken with the D-LUX (Typ 109) even more convenient. Integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n allows for smartphones or tablets with the Leica Image Shuttle app the ability to record pictures even while shooting. The app can also generate a live image from the camera and settings can be controlled though the app as well.

An advancement among point and shoot cameras, the D-LUX (Typ 109) shares the design and quality aspects photographers associate with Leica. The metal housing is sturdy and elegant, with well-placed tactile buttons and dials that further inspire the user's confidence.

Large 12.8MP 4/3" MOS Sensor
The large area of the 17.3 x 13.0mm sensor contributes to better control of depth of field as well as improved shadow detail over versus smaller-sensor cameras. Details, contrast, and colors are accurately captured too.
Fast f/1.7-2.8 Leica DC Vario-Summilux Lens
The integrated f/1.7-2.8 Leica DC Vario-Summilux Lens maintains excellent light-gathering ability even when fully zoomed, helping to free the user from exposure limitations, even in low light. This 3.1x optical zoom lens provides an angle of view equivalent to a 24-75mm lens on a 35mm film camera and is optically stabilized to help counteract blur caused by user movement.
Excellent Low-Light Performance
Along with a large sensor and a bright lens at all focal lengths, and ISO range of 100 to 25600 helps to ensure that low-light is not an obstacle to capturing the image. The 12.8MP over and area of 17.3 x 13.0mm sensor and maximum apertures of f/1.7-2.8 can help to minimize noise at all ISO settings.
UHD 4K Technology
The potential of the camera's large, 12.8MP 4/3" MOS sensor is further exploited by the ability to record UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) video at 30p. MP4 videos can also be recorded in full HD 1080p/60 or standard definition resolutions according to the NTSC or PAL standard.
High-Resolution Viewing Options
Images and videos can be played back on the camera's large, sharp 3.0" 921k-dot rear LCD display. When it is preferable to use a viewfinder, the camera camera's integrated electronic viewfinder can be used instead.
Wireless Connectivity
Paring the with a smartphone or tablet is made easy with integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n capability. Devices with the Leica Image Shuttle app can have images sent to them as images are taken with the camera. The app can also be used to show a live image from the camera or to control camera settings.
Multiple Exposure Modes and Tactile Control
Exposure modes include program, aperture-priority, shutter-priority, manual, as well as 22 creative control modes. Exposure set can be quickly set via an aperture ring and shutter speed dial. Placement of these controls directly on the camera body allows for faster reaction to changing lighting conditions while providing constant confirmation of the chosen shutter speed and aperture.
Durable and Elegant Body
Featuring a black-colored metal body, the D-LUX (Typ 109) is built to last. Buttons and dials are thoughtfully laid out to help ensure that the camera's features always remain a benefit and never and obstacle to the user.
Included Flash
An integrated hot shoe and included Leica CF D external flash provide supplemental light when wanted while avoiding to drain the camera's battery.

    Leica D-LUX (Typ 109) reviews

D-LUX (Typ 109) Digital Camera (Black) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 71.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a dream! I'm a semi-professional photographer who shoots Canon (5dMarkiii and 6d) but was looking for a nice little travel camera. I've had the DLux for two weeks now and LOVE IT! Everything I needed and wanted! All manual all the time. The included flash works better than expected although I'll probably never need to use it. My one recommendation? Buy the leather case- I didn't want to spend that kind of money in a case but I tried several other cases and nothing fit right. I got my Leica case in the mail yesterday and not only does it fit like a glove, it makes the camera easily accessible and looks very rich. Do your Leica a favor and buy the case. You'll love both. I guarantee it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent carry around camera!! As a professional and Nikon user for many years I purchased this camera as an alternative to carrying around my full frame Nikons. At first I was hesitant and felt naked without my whole kit of bodies and lens but within the first few times of using it I was sold. My commercial work is studio but my fine art is all location and mostly at Coney Island, Brooklyn NY.. This new little guy is going to be my new favorite for those occasions as well as scouting location and referencing studio set ups...not to mention just fun photos of friends and family.. Hoping as time goes on to be able to transition into a full frame Leica ..

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Buttons and dials change accidentally I've had this camera for a month and am happy with the image quality and features. It is very lightweight and good-looking. However, it needs to be re-adjusted every time you pick it up, as everything can move so easily (aperture ring, exposure compensation, etc.) and rear buttons can be accidentally pushed. It is driving me crazy. Maybe there is a lock so the buttons won't change, just haven't figured it out yet. If I had to decide today, I would not buy this again despite its nice size and good lens. But I'll go through the entire menu again (have done it 3 times already) and try to see how to keep things from changing. Maybe it will improve.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Travel Camera Just began using the D-Lux 109 as my primary travel camera. Lightweight and perfectly sized to grip and easily operate all controls. The zoom lens operates really smoothly and the 35mm - 75mm zoom range adequate for most situations. Close-up capabilities really stunning; very sharp (see attached photo). Very nice video quality with auto-focus. Small enough for jacket pocket but a bit too large for most pants pockets. Still experimenting with shutter priority / aperture priority preference but right now tend to prefer shutter priority. Previously tried the Sony RX100 III, which was easy to hold but manual controls were too small for my average-sized hands to manipulate well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Point and Shoot This is an incredible travel camera. I also use a Nikon D7200 and Fuji XE-2 mirrorless. I am thinking about selling the Fuji since the smaller Leica is a much better camera; It has wonderful resolution, color, focuses fast, is versatile, light, and has all the manual controls that any serious photographer would require. I use it trekking, hiking, climbing, skiing. I even use it to take photos of musicians at rock concerts. If weight is not a consideration or I am taking photos of sporting events or wildlife, then I switch to my Nikon dSLR. 6 stars!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Forget DSLRs I'm a professional image maker - photo and video. I currently own over $100k of camera equipment - so I'm not a hobbyist. I bought the camera because the Canon 5dsr is just too big. Sure it takes fantastic images but I wanted something that was a bit easier to use. Long battery life, light weight and could fit In a pocket. I looked at the Fuji and Sony cameras in the same class and since I didn't want to invest in more lenses I wanted a fixed lens. This camera is everything I wanted. On a film set its discrete and the color rendition is second to none. Of course Leica glass is just fantastic. My only draw back was the lens extends when turned on. I was hoping for a smaller footprint for the glass but I can get over that. For $1200 I would argue it's the best camera you could buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top of my line This is a big upgrade for me. I use it for macro, family, and street photography. The external mechanical controls for aperture, shutter speed, and focus are a huge improvement over what I have been using. Both the standard lens cap and the auto-opening accessory are both a pain, but tolerable for the overall excellence of the camera. There are so many options I have to be careful about setting something without then knowing how to unset it, but this should come with experience. Automatic setting plus ev exposure control give me most of what I need. The Lightroom seems to be a 30 day version which expires unless you sign on for Adobe cloud for money, or at least I have been warned that my 30 days is about to expire, so caveat emptor on that part of the deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best compact camera available - Prosumer at it's finest I couldn't be happier with this little camera. All the manual controls I wanted in a compact camera to travel with when I don't want to lug the big cameras around. Focus is lightning fast. IQ is awesome. Even though 99% of the time I am shooting in manual mode... it works well even in Auto mode when you have to just grab it for that quick moment and don't have time to set manual controls. I am super excited to take it to a few concerts and actually be able to get in the door with it and be able to take some great shots. Super happy with my purchase.
