This edition of Capture One revolves around streamlining the editing process, through the incorporation of dedicated repair layers, enhanced local adjustments, HDR, and black & white conversion methods, as well as offering support for both Catalogs and Sessions types of organization and rich tethered shooting capabilities. Optimized metadata editing permits adding-to or updating IPTC data from any working stage, and Process Recipes allow a wealth of batch processing control for numerous files. Capture One Pro 8 strives to increase the overall versatility of the program through its incorporation of rich editing and export options, while maintaining the thorough tethering, organizational, and raw file processing capabilities it built its reputation upon.
Complementing Sony photographers' workflow, distinct camera profiles for nearly all past and present Sony digital cameras have been incorporated within Capture One, with each being developed in specific regard to garnering the truest imaging results based on specific cameras' performance. Other corrective features, including lens profiles and lens cast correction, further help to achieve natural, yet refined results that take into account the uniqueness of a variety of imaging systems. Capture and Import
Instant Tethered Capture
Full support for tethered shooting is available, allowing you to directly import images into the program in real time, with the added ability to work in Live View as well. This allows for instant viewing of captured images and a more streamlined method of organizing files and preparing edits for eventual manipulation. Camera exposure settings can be modified remotely and image adjustments and styles can also be applied during capture. Compatible Sony cameras can be plugged directly into the computer to enable close examination of image files while shooting to aid in fine exposure, composition, and lighting adjustments.
In addition to tethered shooting, Live View provides a real-time image of the scene at hand on the computer being tethered to. When monitoring from the larger screen of a computer, composition and focus can be checked more easily and tools can also be added to the interface for instant editing as soon as the image has been shot.
Additionally, this mode incorporates a multi-point focus feature, which assists in fine-tuning focus in a scene. With this feature, you can place focus markers and adjust focus from the camera, with the results instantly visible on the computer for easier focus confirmation.
Support for Nearly All Sony Cameras
This special version of Capture One Pro 8 is dedicated to Sony digital cameras, and dedicated camera and raw file format profiles have been pre-installed to deliver maximal quality from the original image files.
The Capture Pilot feature allows remote triggering with compatible cameras as well as file browsing, rating, and examining of images as they are shot. This system provides a wireless connection between a web browser or iOS device with the current Capture One Session or Catalog.
When utilizing Capture Pilot, clients can follow along with a shoot in real time to expedite the image selection process and to reduce time needed to cull imagery during post production.
Profoto Lighting Integration
Using the Profoto Light Control plug-in for Capture One Pro, you can monitor and adjust compatible Profoto Air lighting units directly from within the software's interface without the need for an additional application. The aperture setting can also be linked to the flash output for greater consistency in exposures, while affording quicker switching of depth of field positions, without needing to manually adjust lighting setups.
All Capture One catalogs are portable, and each image imported into a Catalog receives its own Smart Preview for performing advanced image adjustments without the need to alter the original raw file. Additional tasks such as keywording and metadata editing are also possible, and all of the performed image adjustments are stored within the Catalog and do not alter the original image itself.
Expedited image processing along with notable image quality are calling cards of Capture One Pro, in regard to both straight raw file conversions or when working with a variety of image adjustment features.
For refining the look of local, mid-tone contrast, the Clarity tool helps to enhance details and visual depth with a simple slider system. Four different methods of Clarity control are offered: Classic, Neutral, Punch, and Natural, which serves to heighten contrast while still retaining a natural overall appearance.
A redeveloped HDR tool works to extend the amount of detail visible in highlight and shadow regions of an image, even if the original image is over or underexposed. This tool is especially beneficial for high contrast imagery, and helps to draw out more information from deep shadows or blown out highlights; all from one single capture.
Each of the more than 300 supported cameras has a unique profile with distinct noise reduction characteristics throughout the camera's ISO range, to both minimize the appearance of noise without affecting overall detail. The default setting for each camera type can be used or you can manually adjust noise levels independent of any predetermined profile for extensive control.
A dedicated Film Grain tool helps to simulate the look of traditional silver film and strives to mimic a more organic look contextualized by how light interacts with silver halide on film.
Perspective distortions can be reduced or eliminated using the intelligent Keystone Correction tool, which can affect both vertical and horizontal convergence. Both manual and automated controls are available, with both helping to achieve perfect geometry within the frame.
Automatic Lens Corrections
In addition to the supported camera types, each manufacturer also has a host of supported lens types with their own profiles for fine-tuning image sharpness, distortion correction, and light falloff. Just as with the cameras themselves, each lens profile is created through a strict testing process and the profiles are optimized to deliver consistent results. Alternatively, lens corrections can also be made manually for more personalized refinement.
Lens Cast Calibration (LCC)
Lens Cast Calibration (LCC) specifically corrects certain lens anomalies rendered as color casts or uneven illumination that can occur with some lenses on technical cameras. By photographing a reference image through a neutral semi-transparent filter, this image can be applied and used for automatic correction of color casts, light falloff, and dust spots. This tool is especially useful reproduction photography and copy work where consistent exposure and color balance are a necessity.
Organize and Select
Metadata Editing and Hierarchical Keywords
Extensive IPTC metadata editing capabilities are afforded that help to streamline your overall workflow throughout the entire post-production process. The specific metadata tool allows you to read, update, and modify information at any point of the post-production process. Additionally, hierarchical keywording support further enables you to quickly find and apply collections of keywords to imagery for greater overall efficiency.
Synchronization of Catalog Folders
Folders on a disk can be synchronized with Catalog using just a few clicks, regardless of whether the changes have been made within Capture One or elsewhere.
Designed for more efficient project-based work, Sessions stores all raw files, Selects, exported images, and deleted images from individual shoots into one dedicated Project folder. This Session is easy to move, copy, and backup since all files are located in a single folder, which makes it a straightforward process to move Sessions from a capture system to a processing system, or to send a Session to a third party for additional retouching or final editing.
The structure of a Session can be customized to your own needs, with the ability to divide a shoot into different capture folders for faster locating of specific file during the editing process.
Helping to organize collections of images, Catalogs can be employed to quickly browse and search through large groups of files at a rapid pace. Images can be stored within one Catalog or dispersed throughout many depending on your own workflow, and Catalogs can also be shared within a multi-user environment for easier collaboration.
Search and Filtering
Both Catalogs and Sessions can be searched and filtered quickly using a wide variety of search terms, such as ratings, keywords, and EXIF and IPTC data. Search filters can also be combined and saved for later reuse as Smart Albums, which expedite the seeking process with oft-used search terms.
Enhance and Adjust
A wealth of non-destructive local adjustments can be used to refine and enhance the look of imagery, including the ability to modify exposure, sharpening, and white balance within specified regions of an image. You can work directly on the raw image file, too, to better ensure maintained quality and detail retention, as well as to save time by applying all of the edits at once.
Black & White Conversion
A rich black & white conversion process allows you to transform color imagery into monochromatic imagery, with the ability to adjust color channels and create split-toning effects for refined control over the final tonality.
Dedicated clone and heal layers offer you expanded ability to retouch and repair imagery, in both global and local fashions. A clone layer allows one part of an image to be copied to another part, while a heal layer utilizes algorithms to match certain elements, like texture, tone, and transparency, for a more pleasing, natural result ideally suited for retouching. Both of these layer types allow you to perform commonly used repairing techniques directly to the raw file, without the need of an additional editing application.
For applying color adjustments to imagery, the Color Editor can be used to apply global color changes with a basic interface. For more refined control, the Advanced Color Editor tool can be used to work within a more narrow color profile for minute changes.
Additionally, a built-in Smart Saturation function ensures natural color and contrast reproduction while the Skin Tone Editor allows you to produce pleasing and consistent skin tones throughout the entire image.
Styles and Presets
Most of the editing features within Capture One Pro 8 have built-in presets in addition to this ability to utilize custom presets. By applying presets to different editing commands, you can clearly define favorite settings and apply them en masse to batches of files; such as maintaining a consistent sharpening level for a print or a string of metadata tags.
Styles permit combining a variety of different settings together for greater creative freedom when editing, including the ability to reproduce the look of traditional film or achieve other unique looks. A wide range of Styles are built in to the software, along with ability for you to build, save, and reuse your own Styles for maintaining consistency.
Export and Print
Helping to expedite the exporting workflow, Process Recipes can batch process groups of imagery, with different formats, in the background with the status clearly visible in a dedicated batch queue. By utilizing these recipes, you can maintain consistent export settings and expedite turning your work over to clients. When defining how a Process Recipe is developed, you can select from different file format, sizing, and metadata choices to apply at once. Additionally, multiple recipes can be applied together prior to beginning the exporting process.
Using a color-calibrated monitor, you can output imagery to any RGB or CMYK working profile for on-screen soft proofing to help alleviate the number of test prints required to produce a finalized image.
Photographs can be printed directly from Capture One, as contact sheets or sets with customizable templates, in a fully integrated and color managed workflow.
Slideshows can also be developed within the application and can incorporate both photographs and video files, along with a selection of fades and transition effects.
Web Contact Sheets
A dedicated web presentation function automatically formats series of photos into easily navigable albums dedicated to web browsers, computers, iOS devices, Android mobile devices, or Windows Phone operating systems. A wide and versatile set of templates allows you to pick and choose from a variety of ways in which to showcase your work.
Performance and Productivity
Customizable User Interface
Benefitting its use on current operating systems, the Capture One Pro 8 interface has been enhanced to offer a more intuitive method of navigating the variety of controls, tools, and functions. Additionally, the interface is completely customizable to help place the most frequently used tools in easy to find locations. Additionally, you can set up different workspaces with different layouts to better suit different specific jobs or tasks.
Templates can be created that maintain specific settings when developing new Catalogs and Sessions, including the ability to have complete consistency in naming conventions, output locations, favorites lists, and more.
Dedicated to users on Mac computers only, the AppleScript Library permits extensive control over automating certain tasks, such as automatically creating a Capture folder based on the name of a bar code scanned item, processing full resolution TIFF files as the images are being captured, or sorting images in different folders based on rating, color tags, or time.
Automated adjustments quickly correct exposure, saturation, contrast, white balance, high dynamic range, levels, and rotation settings of an image.
Helping to quickly sort through imagery and determine the focus of an image, the Focus Mask tool determines and highlights which areas of an image are in or out of focus. During tethered shooting, this feature can also be utilized to ensure critical focus without having to zoom into an image at 100%.
