LaCie 9000493U overview

  • 1Description

With a combination of Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.0 ports, the 4TB d2 Thunderbolt 2 External Hard Drive from LaCie is a versatile storage solution. USB 3.0 connectivity offers a maximum data speed of up to 5 Gb/s while Thunderbolt 2 offers bi-directional data transfer capability with a maximum throughput of up to 20 Gb/s. While these data rates are theoretical maximum data speeds, this hard drive offers a max data transfer rate of up to 180MB/s for a streamlined workflow. The Thunderbolt 2 ports also allow for the daisy chaining of up to six devices, including a 4K display, to a single Thunderbolt port on a computer.

Inside the d2 Thunderbolt 2 Drive you will find a Seagate 4TB hard drive spinning at up to 7200 rpm. This enhanced storage capacity and drive speed when accompanied with the fast data transfer rate allow you to browse RAW Adobe Lightroom files with no lag. The unibody aluminum enclosure keeps this fanless drive cool while 256-bit AES software encryption ensures that stored files remain safe and secure. The d2 Thunderbolt 2 Drive also comes compatible with both Time Machine and Windows Backup for easy data backup.

Versatility for Professional Environments
The LaCie d2 combines Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.0 interfaces to deliver enhanced speeds when connected to various late-model PC or Mac computers. Dual Thunderbolt 2 ports let you daisy chain up to six devices to a single Thunderbolt port on a computer. This means that you could connect up to five LaCie d2 plus a 4K display to an iMac computer's Thunderbolt 2 port, bringing improved scalability and convenience to 4K or other workflows. And since USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 2 are backward compatible, you always get the fastest speeds your computer allows.
Enhanced Speed for Leaner Workflows
The LaCie d2 combines advanced interfaces with a Seagate 4TB 7200 rpm hard disk, resulting in speeds of up to 220 MB/s. With this speed, it's possible to store and browse a massive RAW Adobe Lightroom library with zero lag.
Unibody Enclosure
The casing is forged from a single sheet of aluminum, providing rigidity for long-term durability.
Power-Saving Mode
For Thunderbolt connections, save energy by pressing the power button to spin down disks without interrupting daisy chain transfers. For USB connections, disk spins down automatically when the host operating system goes to sleep.
Fan-Free Cooling
The seamless, all-aluminum unibody enclosure draws heat away from the hard disk. The integrated base extends the enclosure's surface area, providing even more space for heat dissipation. The results are a long lifespan for components and ultra-quiet operation.
Integrated Cable Management
Prevent accidentally disconnected interface or power cables without compromising the look and design of the product.
Anti-Vibration Features
A cushioning base and vibration-absorbing hard disk mounts combine to reduce vibration.
Upgradable to External Hybrid Storage
Install the optional LaCie d2 SSD Upgrade (sold separately) to multiply speeds by a factor of five, with zero compromise in capacity. At up to 1150 MB/s, the LaCie d2 with the d2 SSD Upgrade delivers speeds that exceed the performance of even the internal SSD on your late-model PC or Mac computer - in a single-disk enclosure. Remove the rear panel on the LaCie d2 to install the upgrade, and instantly you have an additional 128 GB of SSD storage. Two separate drives mount on the computer: one for the SSD, and one for the hard disk. Use the SSD for bandwidth-intensive tasks such as fast file transfers, audio mixing, video editing, or OS booting, and use the hard disk for file archiving.
Enhanced Backup and Security
The LaCie d2 includes a backup software suite, and offers compatibility with Time Machine and Windows Backup software. It also includes LaCie Private-Public software, which lets you password-protect volumes with AES 256-bit encryption.

    LaCie 9000493U reviews

4TB d2 Thunderbolt 2 External Hard Drive is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Thunderbolt Drive I've been working with these Thunderbolt 2 drives for the last 18 months, and I have completely switched from favoring G-Drives to these LaCie drives. They're much quieter, and the performance when editing 4K and RED footage on my iMac is much better than Thunderbolt G-Drives. And the price is really good for 2 TB2 ports to allow daisy chaining plus a USB 3.0 port for when an older/lesser, but more common connection, is needed. I often have 3-4 of these daisy chained together. These are my go to primary drives for editing video.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great so far Bought this for a Time Machine drive for my Mac. Don't really need the Thunderbolt 2 for Time Machine, but Firewire is going away and I have run out of USB ports, so I decided to spend the extra money for Thunderbolt so I can use it on my next computer and not use up a USB port. It is more than fast enough for my current purpose and I can use it for external storage in the future if I need to. This was the only 4 TB Thunderbolt drive I found at this time that has 2 Thunderbolt ports. I like having all the ports I can get. I hesitated before buying it because it has a Seagate drive in it and the historical Backblaze reliability data for Seagate is not good, but the more recent 4TB Seagate drives have had good reliability stats, and I've had good luck with LaCie in the past. I've only been running it for a few weeks, but since it is used for Time Machine it is running all the time. No problems so far. If it gives me 3 years of problem free use, I'll come back and give another star if I remember. I never use the LaCie software. I reformatted the disk to free up the few extra MB's of space so I can't comment on the software. It is quiet and doesn't get too hot, and the low profile is good on my desk. The super bright blue light is a little annoying, but I taped a piece of paper over it to dim it and now it is fine. I'm happy with the drive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from transferencia veloz / fast transfer Es un disco veloz en Thunderbolt 2 y formateado para Mac. No ocupa mucho espacio en mi escritorio y ademas es del color que mi Mac Book Pro y accesorios. Es solida y elegante. Un punto en contra es que la luz azul es punto fastidiosa y no se puede apagar cuando esta en uso el disco duro. It is a fast in Thunderbolt 2 and formatted disk for Mac. Do not take up much space on my desktop and also is in the colour as my Mac Book Pro and accessories. It is solid and elegant. A point against is that blue light is annoying and cannot be turned off when in use the hard disk.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good amount of storage, not seeing benefits of Thunderbolt 2 Transfers to and from this drive are somewhat faster than transfers to my Thunderbolt drive, but I'm not really seeing the increase to Thunderbolt 2 having a substantial difference. I usually purchase drives in pairs, and I'm glad that I only spent the money on just one this time. This may be a limitation of having a spinning disk instead of an SSD in this drive, but I'm not seeing the speeds I imagined. That said, I do like that this has USB 3.0, unlike the G-Drive equivalent. Yes, I prefer Thunderbolt and do appreciate the speed difference on my machines, but it may leave me with limited options should I have to connect to someone else's computer. It's not been a bad drive so far, but I feel like I could've gotten more for less.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Quality Workhorse Everything im looking for is an external drive basically. Compact, high-capacity design with a fast interface that runs relatively quiet for an HHD. Easy set-up too. Just format and go.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid.. So far Good.. So far so good, the HD has been performing great, using it at storage for video files as well as a for media cache files in premiere. Fires right up on a 27' imac, come with a nice thunderbolt cable. I have daisy chained two of them, and it worked great as well. The light is very bright, in a dark room when it is processing its like a strobe light... Wish there was a feature to turn it off. Theres no fans either, it gets kinda hot, well see how it does in the long run.
