Transcend MTS400 overview

  • 1Description

Increase your Windows or Linux system's performance by installing the Transcend 256GB MTS400S SATA III M.2 Internal SSD which delivers read speeds of 500 MB/s and write speeds of 450 MB/s. This SSD utilizes an SATA III interface that provides 6 Gb/s transfers speeds and supports random 4K reads of 70,000 IOPS and 4K writes of 70,000 IOPS. Its form factor is type 2242 and is installed in a computer with an available M.2 slot that is 42mm long. When using this SDD with a hard drive, you can use Intel's Smart Response Technology to constantly monitor or move your most accessed programs to the SSD, and stores all other programs and files to the hard drive. It also offers TRIM support, which helps reduce write times to the drive allowing you to save information faster and prolongs the life the drive.

Please be aware that while this SSD is covered by a limited 3-year warranty, the warranty does not apply when the SSD Scope's wear-out indicator displays 0% within the warranty coverage.

General Features

M.2 Type 2242 form factor (42mm) for mobile computing devices
Supports Wear Leveling and Intelligent Block Management
DDR3 DRAM cache
Supports DevSleep mode, which allows devices to completely shut down the SATA interface and conserve battery life, unlike existing partial/slumber states
Supports Power Shield, S.M.A.R.T, TRIM, and NCQ commands
RoHS compliant
Intel Smart Response Technology
Transcend's SATA III 6 Gb/s MTS400S M.2 SSD supports Intel Smart Response Technology (ISRT), which allows you to configure your computer system with an SSD used as cache memory between the hard disk drive and system memory. This provides the advantage of having a hard disk drive for ample storage capacity while delivering an SSD-like overall system performance experience. ISRT works by monitoring which programs and files you access most frequently and stores them on the SSD. As a result, application launch speed and overall system responsiveness are improved, while the large capacity of the hard drive is free to store all your other programs and files. In this configuration, only one drive letter is displayed; no additional drive letter is required for the SSD used as cache.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Faster than it claims and a great price I purchased a Toshiba Chromebook 2 2015 Edition which comes with only 16 GB of internal storage (they call it a hard drive but it is really a couple memory chips). On most Chromebooks this hard drive, also known as eMMC memory is non-replaceable However, on the Toshiba 2015 Chromebook 2 that is not the case (and it must be the 2015 model; nothing before that will work, even if it is a Chromebook 2. Like the Toshiba Chromebook 2 2014 model; won't work). But with this model you can replace the 16 GB hard drive with a larger one. In my case I went for a 256 GB drive. And the brand is one I've used before without any problems ever arising.I hunted for the best price I could find and not only did B&H have the best price on the hard drive of this review but they even had the Chromebook computer at a better price. Some people have asked why I would need to increase the size of the hard drive since Chromebooks store everything on the internet. Simple answer, guess what your Chromebook becomes when you have no internet available...a big paper weight. There are a few under featured programs you can use with it when off line but I wanted a more powerful and lightweight computer to use that didn't depend on the internet. And that's where the larger hard drive comes into play,Replacing the hard drive was a matter of taking the bottom of the computer off (8 screws) and then taking the hard drive out. It's held in place by one screw. Take that screw out and the existing hard drive slides right out and the new one in. Put the one screw that hold the hard drive back in, put the bottom on and the 8 screw that hold it back and you now have something (again, I got the i3 version of the Chromebook) about a powerful as an ultrabook for less than 1/3 the price (and that includes the cost of the new hard drive).Last question that people comment on is basically, so what if you have a bigger hard drive, it's still only a Chromebook. That's where step 2 making this a real powerhouse comes in. Now that there is enough hard drive space it is possible to install, right beside the Chrome operating system, anything from Windows to Linux operating systems.Since the Chromebook operating system is actually based on an operating system called Linux, I just installed a version of Linux on the machine as well. Again, the Chrome operating system is still there and when you turn the machine on you can choose which operating system to start. And also, again, you need the hard drive space to install another full operating system. This hard drive is everything it say and more. After installing it I ran benchmark test on it that tell you how fast it can write a file to the drive and how fast it can read files already on the drive. In both cases this drive averages almost 20% faster than its claims. With the drive that comes with Chrome it takes approx. 5 seconds from the point you open the computer's lid to be ready to log in With this new drive the average time to get to the log in is between 1 and 2 seconds. By the time the screen is fully opened the computer is already waiting for the user to log in.This also means that if you log into an alternative operating system like Linux, you can perform actions that only a full computer is able to. If you use the Chrome operating system that came with the machine you can surf the net or watch Netflix but it really isn't designed to do much else. However, with the larger hard drive and the ability to install a full fledged operating system you now have a full computer. The hardware on this Chromebook is actually designed to do much more. With Linux I can still surf the net, do e-mail, watch Netflix. But with the extra hard drive space I can also load & create extra large files, use it with graphics programs and do a variety of things that Chrome just can't handle by itself. So by just adding this hard drive I have a full blown computer that weighs under 3 lbs, has a backlit keyboard, a full 1080p high def screen, an HDMI port, USB 3 connectivity AND a 256 GB hard drive which is large enough to hold any file I create (along with a few GB of music and a movie or 2).Finally, as I said before, without this 256 GB hard drive this would be a powerful computer that could only be used for casual amusement. Now it's as powerful AND useful as a ultrabook at 1/3 the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great price and very decent performance Despite a general perception that M.2 2242 drives are slower, this drive performs as well as one can expect at this price point and SATA interface. Highly recommended.
