Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

A versatile wide-angle zoom for Canon APS-C-format DSLRs, the AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX Lens from Tokina offers a 17.5-32mm equivalent focal length and features a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture for maintained brightness throughout the zoom range. One P-MO hybrid aspherical element and two glass-molded aspherical element work in tandem to minimize distortions and control various aberrations while three SD ultra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations for increased clarity. A multi-layer lens coating has also been applied to further enhance overall light transmission and color accuracy by suppressing lens flare and ghosting. Well-suited to working in a wide variety of situations, this ultra-wide zoom covers an array of wide-angle perspectives while maintaining consistent illumination for working in challenging lighting.

Benefitting the usability, a one-touch focusing clutch permits quick switching between autofocus and manual focus modes, and an internal focusing design maintains the overall length of the lens during use. The medium-torque focusing ring further benefits precise handling by allowing for refined control when manually focusing. Additionally, this lens sees the incorporation of a nine-blade diaphragm, which contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when employing shallow depth of field shooting techniques.

Compatible with Canon APS-C-format DSLRs, this wide-angle zoom provides a 17.5-32mm equivalent focal length and features a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture for consistent low-light performance throughout the zoom range.
One P-MO hybrid aspherical element in the front group pairs with two glass-molded aspherical elements in the rear group to minimize distortions and correct aberrations. Additionally, three SD ultra-low dispersion elements are also incorporated within the lens design to further reduce chromatic aberrations for greater color accuracy and clarity.
Multi-layer lens coatings reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and maintained color fidelity.
A one-touch focus clutch mechanism permits seamless switching between autofocus and manual focusing positions, and the focusing ring features a moderate amount of torque for more fine-tuned control over the focusing position.
An internal focusing mechanism maintains the overall lens form factor during operation.
A nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth out-of-focus quality, which benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

    Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 reviews

AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 54.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy So Far! I have only had the lens for a few weeks but wanted to put down my initial thoughts. Overall I am very happy with its performance. The lens feels well-built and has no physical weak points that I have found. The photos are clear and have no distortion along the edges, even when wide open. Minor Gripes: It is heavy, the auto-focus can hunt for a few seconds too long, the lens cap can be difficult to put on and switching from auto to manual focus doesn't always register correctly with the camera. These are small things in my opinion. I would give it a 4.5/5 (rounded up to 5) so far as it is a great lens but not perfect. Definitely worth the price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice wide angle lens I purchase this lens for astrophotography and general wide angle shots and have been enjoying it very much. Seems well built with very good image quality for the cost. Any faults in image quality can easily and quickly be corrected in Lightroom or other software. I have not had any issues with back focus as others have reported. If I had to fault one thing it would be the push pull AF clutch, I have found this a little difficult to auto focus and then switch to manual without changing focus. Get around this by manually focus with live view and seems fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I have had my lens for a little over a week now and have been lucky enough to go out and shot the Northern Lights on three different occasions. The stars have been super sharp! I am extremely happy with the images I have taken and would highly recommend the lens. I can't wait to head out again this weekend. One of the main reasons I bought this lens was to use it for both night photography and landscapes. I can't be happier with my night shots and can't wait to capture some landscapes! It was flawless this past Tuesday night even at -15 degree temperatures outside. I paid extra for 2 day shipping and was pleased that it arrived right on time to Alaska. It is slightly heavier then some of my other lenses but I would still buy it again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tokina at-x 11-20mm Milky Way must have I purchased this lens for the sole purpose of photographing the Milky Way. It did not disappoint me at all. the photographs i took with this were superb. The Infinity setting on the lens worked like a charm. I never had to adjust it after the initial setting in the 5 hours i was shooting. I don't shoot video but if I did I would fined the only issue with the lens is the autofocus motor is a little loud.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Than Ever!! I purchased this version after dropping my 11-16mm and bending the mount. That unfortunate event turned out to be a good thing, because this new lens is noticably better. it has the same soild build quality, but it is sharper in the center and much sharper at the edges. There is very little objectionable distortion in most images. The using for video, the zoom ring is smooth and fluid. As an added bonus, this lens also works on full frame cameras, but only at 15-16mm focal lengths, which is still pretty wide. For the money, this an very nice product. I'm glad I purchased it as soon as it became available.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great replacement I had the Tokina 11-16 2.8 ATX. A buddy kept bugging me to buy it off me. He waved enough cash so I replaced it with the 11-20. I wanted to pick it up anyway. The only negative I would say is that it has an 82MM and not the 77MM like the 11-16. I had to pick up a new lens protector too. This lens works great for night sky shots. I also like it for carrying around at car shows.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite walkaround lens I had previously purchased the Sigma 10-20 and had sold it to a friend as a starter wide angle lens. My second purchase was the Canon 10-18, which was affordable, but still didn't provide 2.8 aperture I longed for. I sought after the Tokina 11-16 2.8, and was pleasantly surprised once I learned of this lens. I'm currently using it on a Canon 7DMKii body and it functions perfectly in low-light for a variety of situations. Its a great lens for nature photography, group shots, and of course astrophotography. This is one to surely have in your camera bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens! Nice, wide angle lens that's good in low light. I mainly use it for video. It's so nice to have a fixed aperture lens with such a wide angle. The auto-focus is fast and responsive. I use this lens with my Canon C100 and T5i/700D.
