Tokina AT-X 24-70mm f/2.8 PRO FX Overview

  • 1Description

One of the most versatile focal lengths available, Tokina's AT-X 24-70mm f/2.8 PRO FX Lens is a standard wide-angle to portrait-length zoom featuring a bright, constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. Designed for Canon full-frame-format DSLRs, this everyday lens is ideally suited for nearly any genre of photography, including travel, portraiture, landscape, and event shooting. Three aspherical elements pair with three super-low dispersion elements to produce bright, evenly-illuminated imagery with controlled aberrations and distortions, while multi-layer lens coatings help to reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Well-suited to working in a wide variety of situations, this standard zoom covers an array of perspectives while maintaining consistent illumination for working in challenging lighting.

Benefitting the usability, a one-touch focusing clutch permits quick switching between autofocus and manual focus modes, and an internal focusing design maintains the overall length of the lens during use. A Silent-Drive Module AF system suits both stills and video recording, too, by providing quick and quiet performance. Additionally, this lens sees the incorporation of a nine-blade diaphragm, which contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when employing shallow depth of field shooting techniques.

Compatible with Canon full-frame-format DSLRs, this standard zoom can also be used with APS-C-format DSLRs where it will provide a 38.4-112mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture provides consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to greater control over focus position and when working in low-light conditions.
Three glass molded aspherical elements and three super-low dispersion (SD) glass elements combine to enable high resolution and consistent, even illumination with minimal distortion. The trio of low dispersion elements are arranged within the rear lens groups and also help to reduce chromatic aberrations for greater color accuracy and clarity.
Multi-layer lens coatings reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and maintained color fidelity.
A Silent Drive-Module (SDM) offers fast and quiet autofocus performance to benefit both still and movie recording applications.
A one-touch focus clutch mechanism permits seamless switching between autofocus and manual focusing positions.
An internal focusing mechanism maintains the overall lens form factor during operation.
A nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth out-of-focus quality, which benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

    Tokina AT-X 24-70mm f/2.8 PRO FX Reviews

AT-X 24-70mm f/2.8 PRO FX Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Lens! Images are sharp! I've always wanted to own Canon's 24-70mm f/2.8 lens but the price tag prevented me from purchasing it. When I saw that Tokina released a 24-70 f/2.8 lens for almost half the cost, I knew I had to get it and the quality would be just as great as Canon's. I have Tokina 11-16mm that I used with Canon 7D, and I was always impressed with the sharpness of the images. Therefore, I knew that Tokina's 24-70mm f/2.8 would offer the same great sharpness, and it does! I use it with my Canon 5D Mark III and I'm really impressed by how sharp the images are. At all zoom lengths, the images are truly crystal clear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great all-purpose lens. great deal. My first impressions of this lens are very good. On my 5dIII its nice and sharp, easy to focus. smooth. I'll use it mostly for video,? and I was pleasantly surprised how it dosen't breathe hardly at all, even in a long focus pull.? also nice is its near-focus. It focuses about 12" away from the lens front and can rack to infinity smoothly. My only iffy feature is the barrel slider to engage/disengage af...It seems a little sticky out of the box. Hopefully it'll smooth out even tho it'll be in manual most of the time. That said, af seems smooth and quiet in the short look I gave it... I'm very pleased with this baby right out of the box. Thanks B&H!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Value in Class I have a Canon 6D with a 24-105mm f4 L lens as my standard go-to lens and have been waiting for Canon to drop the price on their highly regarded 24-70mm f2.8 L series lens before making the upgrade. When I saw the positive reviews of this Tokina lens, I decided it was time to make this purchase at a much more affordable price. I'm glad I did! This lens is sharp and crisp, edge to edge with great contrast and color rendition. I have used it enough to know that it will be my new standard lens. The lens is heavy, but I generally shoot on a tripod so it's less of a concern to me. The build quality is top rate and seems more solid than my Canon glass, including my other L series lenses. I shoot into the sun a lot and did note some flare at certain ranges but nothing extraordinary. Overall, I love this lens and would highly recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Favorite I read as many reviews as possible before taking the leap and purchasing this lens. I'm happy to say, the lens did not disappoint in any way. The sharpness and color accuracy are exceptional. Tack sharp images and, when used for portraits, exhibits nice bokeh. Some early reviews noted that the focus could be slow and that the motor was noisy. I have not found either of these to be an issue. The lends is heavy, but also very solid and well constructed. The weight is not an issue for me as I use a Black Rapid harness if I am shooting/walking for long stretches which keeps my arms, hands and shoulders from tiring. Considering the sturdy build and the output quality I get with this lens, a little extra heft is okay with me. The zoom ring is stiff but not to the point of being a problem. Lens creep should never be a problem with this thing. I also like the clutch on the focus ring. Super simple to switch to manual on the fly without having to search for the right switch. This is a new favorite and probably the lens that will get the most use in my bag. Worth every penny.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great build quality, sharp & nice quality glass, but heavy! Received this lens and instantly ran it through some tests! Overall, really like this lens. Build quality is great and feels super sturdy. With that said though, it is defiantly heavy and after a while gets tiring to hold! That is mostly why I gave it 4 stars. Quality though is great! At 24mm it's super sharp with good color rendition. Some vignetting though when it's wide open. At 70mm, sharpness drops a touch and more vignetting can be seen when wide open, but still very good. Overall very happy with the sharpness of this lens! Also, no crazy chromatic abberation either, very manageable!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it, Love it, Love it! Best deal on the market today. Sharp, clear, beautiful Pics. Used a Canon 24-70 f/2.8 in the past and bought this for half the price and so glad that I did. Yes, it's almost a 1/4 pound heavier, but doesn't feel like it. Plus, it's heavier because it's built better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Outstanding! Crisp, sharp images throughout it's range. My daily go to lens & it will be yours too. I was looking for an alternative to the expensive Canon version since I recently upgraded two cameras & two L series lenses. I am thrilled to have found this lens. Yes, its a bit heavy, but you'll get used to it. I did!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens. A few months ago my wife bought me the 14-20 Tokina for my canon (t3) and I loved it. I saw a sale come up on this and had enough saved so I went for it. I only have been taking photos for less than a year so I cannot compare this to many lenses. However the reviews I saw on this were very good especially since some of them were comparing it to other much more expensive lenses. The results I have been getting with this are very good and it gives me a tad more reach than my 14-20. I have noticed a little sticking with going from auto to manual focus, but being that I normally just use the manual that isn't a complaint for me. I would recommend this and would buy it again.

    question

Would this work well on a Blackmagic Ursa 4k mini?
    Asked by: Matthew S.
Yes and here's why. It works great optically on the EF version of course. For ENG or doc its a fantastic lens, as long as you're aware there is no stabilization and don't go handheld too often. But with an ursa mini if you wanted to do that you'd put it on a steadicam anyways. Its like having 4 sharp primes on the go, and with an adapter rind you can easily use it with a follow focus.

    question

I'm wondering what the bokeh quality is for this lens? Is it buttery like the Canon??
    Asked by: Diane
It has a great bokeh! And also this lens is way sharper than Canon lens. Tokina lens focuses a bit slower, but once it focused, it gives very sharp images.

    question

would this lens work with an adapter like the sigma MC-11 on a Sony A7s?
    Asked by: Paulo Z.
Adapters are not recommended for use with Tokina lenses, as it may cause damage to the internal circuitry of the lens.
