Nikon 7S overview

  • 1Description

Nikon's black 8x42 ProStaff 7S Binocular is part of the flagship line of their ProStaff series, and comes outfitted with an array of optical and design features to give users the ability to discern details of distant subjects — in even the most challenging light and harshest weather.

It features phase-corrected roof prisms that have been further treated with highly-reflective mirror coatings, and anti-reflection fully multi-coated optical surfaces that work together to maximize light transmission, while limiting internal diffraction and interference, to produce bright and clear high-contrast images with accurate color rendition across the entire visual spectrum. The 42mm objectives boost its light-gathering ability to improve views in challenging light such as at dawn and dusk, or in foggy and cloudy weather, without the bulk and weight of larger-objective models. Its comfortable exit pupil, long eye relief, and spacious field of view help to minimize the movement of the horizon line on rough or rolling seas to limit disorientation when using them on a boat and allows users to enjoy an immersive observational experience from early morning to late evening.

Complementing the optical performance are construction details that make the binocular durable and comfortable to use. It has a lightweight and corrosion-resistant reinforced polycarbonate resin chassis, and is protected by black rubberized armor that is accented with textured palm-pads to give it a secure non-slip grip. The optical tubes are nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and submersible, as well as resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature variations and environmental conditions. A tethered one-piece ocular rainguard covers the eyecups as the binocular hangs around the neck and prevents rain and spraying water from filling them. The objective lens caps can clip onto the neck strap to keep them safe from blowing overboard or being lost on the forest floor.

Optical Performance
  • Moderate 8x power magnifies without sacrificing the exit pupil for enhanced low-light viewing
  • 42mm objective lenses improves light-gathering ability without adding excessive bulk or weight
  • Roof prism light path ensures optical tubes remain thin for a compact form factor
  • Phase-corrected prism coatings reduce internal interference to improve light transmission, contrast, and resolution
  • Highly-reflective mirror coatings on prism surfaces reduce internal light loss and diffraction for brighter and sharper views
  • Anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission across the entire visible spectrum for accurate color rendition, and improved contrast and clarity
  • 356' field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Closed-bridge configuration provides a solid and stable platform for the internal focusing mechanism
  • Large slip center focus wheel allows for precise focus control, even while wearing gloves
  • Right eye dioptric adjustment collar helps to compensate for individual eye prescription
  • 56-72mm interpupillary adjustment range
  • Twist-up/click-stop rubber eyecups for use with or without eyewear
  • Exceptional 19.5mm eye relief helps to reduce eye strain and improves viewing comfort
  • Comfortable 5.25mm exit pupil will cover most pupils as they open and dilate in low light to keep the full scene in view
Construction Details
  • Environmentally-friendly Eco-Glass is made without lead and arsenic
  • Lightweight and durable fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate chassis
  • Chassis material is temperature-resistant, preventing the expansion and contraction that is common with metal, which can cause the optical components to move out of alignment over time and prevents sharp focus
  • Textured black rubber armoring protects against bumps and impacts while providing a slip-resistant grip, especially in cold and wet weather
  • Textured, ergonomically-placed palm pads improve grip stability and comfort
  • Nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and submersible to 3.3' (1m) for up to 10 minutes, and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature changes and environmental conditions
  • 1-piece tethered ocular rainguard protects eyecups from water pooling in them from rain or spraying water when hanging from the neck
  • Objective lens caps can be clipped to neck strap to avoid losing them during observation sessions
  • Weight: 23 ounces

Nikon 7S reviews

8x42 ProStaff 7S Binocular (Black) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Awesome For the money you'd be hard pressed to find anything better. The detail and color are terrific. It has excellent build quality and the focusing knob is very smooth. I love that it's waterproof too. My only minor gripe is that the front lens covers are not attached to it and can be easily lost when not in use. That being said, although not securely they can be attach to the neck strap. The lens covers certainly do not affect these bino's awesome performance. They are terrific!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm impressed. I had initially been looking at the 8x42 Monarch 5, but for under $200 I decided to take a chance on the Prostaff 7s. They are bright and clear. The right diopter stays in focus as I change focus through the field. They're phase coated, and the close focus is much closer than the spec ratings...like around 8ft. They're very light and comfortable with a durable rubber coating. I dropped them once and they just kind of bounced, with no ill effects. Saved about $80 over the M5s, and at this price point that is significant.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No Surprises My main purpose for binoculars is hunting and general viewing while hiking. Because I'm carrying a gun and backpack most of the time, no fuss binoculars at the ready are important. As all the other reviews stated, the lens caps are worthless. I've attached them per instructed but I don't think they'll stay for long. The eye piece cap will remain for now but the outer, loose caps will get lost for sure. It's only a matter of time. Might as well store them in the case and forget them. To be fair, I've never put much stock into lens caps anyway. It's nice to have the eye piece covered in a rain or in dusty conditions and so long as this cover is attached, I'll use it. But it's rather large and ill fitting so I may remove it once I start using the binoculars more regularly. I think it may just get in the way. The strap is not the best either. I like a short strap so the binoculars are at my chest and pull up a short way to use. This strap is too long and does not adjust short enough. It's not very ergonomically designed either. It's about as cheaply made as you could put on a quality binocular. I'll shop for another strap that fits my needs since this one is uncomfortable and too long. The binoculars fit well in my small hands. Their length will fit large hands easily. The focus knob is smooth but firm and easy to adjust. The large exit pupils makes these binoculars a dream to use. They are sharp from edge to edge. I'm going to like these once I find a strap to fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent and just what I needed I've only tested these out so far here in my home neighborhood, but about to take them on safari/conservation trip in Africa, so can update afterward but the minute I took these out of their very secure wrapping and held them up to the distant woods, I could tell that they're amazing. Easy to adjust, lighter than I'd imagined. I wear glasses, and no problem with these in that regard. Love these binoculars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Once again I can watch the birds I bought these binoculars because my old Bushnells no longer gave me clear sight while wearing my glasses. These are incredible. I'm watching birds easily as they flit from one branch to another and viewing whales and sea lions from the beach. They are just what I wanted and would have had five stars except that the lens covers are awful and won't stay on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice and clear I am really happy with this binocular. About as clear as any and really sharp in the center of the field. Sharpness falls off a bit near the edge but that is not as important as one might think. Well made and easy to use and handle. I wish I could afford a $2500 binocular but for the price it would be hard to beat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact and powerful Got very expert advice at B&H. The binocular I bought was even recommended over more expensive models from the same manufacturer. Amazing that so many models are in stock on location.
