Nikon 16003 overview

  • 1Description

Nikon's black 10x42 ProStaff 7S Binocular represents the most powerful model within the flagship line of their ProStaff series. It comes outfitted with an array of optical and design features to give users the ability to discern details at a distance—in even the most challenging light and harshest weather.

It features phase-corrected roof prisms that have been further treated with highly reflective mirror coatings, and anti-reflection fully multi-coated optical surfaces that work together to maximize light transmission, while limiting internal diffraction and interference, to produce bright and clear high-contrast images with accurate color rendition across the entire visual spectrum. The 42mm objectives boost its light-gathering ability to improve views in challenging light such as at dawn and dusk, or in foggy and cloudy weather, without the bulk and weight of larger-objective models. Its spacious apparent angle of view helps to mitigate the appearance of visible hand shake that is often associated with holding powerful optics such as this and minimizes the movement of the horizon line on rough or rolling seas to limit disorientation when using it on a boat. The combination of prisms, coatings, and comfortable eye relief allows users to enjoy an immersive observational experience from early morning to late evening.

Complementing the optical performance are construction details that make the binocular durable and comfortable to use. It has a lightweight and corrosion-resistant reinforced polycarbonate resin chassis and is protected by black rubberized armor that is accented with textured palm pads to give it a secure non-slip grip. The optical tubes are nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and submersible, as well as resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature variations and environmental conditions. A tethered one-piece ocular rainguard covers the eyecups as the binocular hangs around the neck and prevents rain and spraying water from filling them. The objective lens caps can clip onto the neck strap to keep them safe from blowing overboard or being lost on the forest floor.

Whether you're hiking, hunting, birding, or boating, this ProStaff will quickly become indispensable for all your outdoor activities.

Optical Performance
  • High 10x magnification brings distant objects in close for detailed observations
  • 42mm objective lenses improve light-gathering ability without adding excessive bulk or weight
  • Roof prism light path ensures optical tubes remain thin for a compact form factor
  • Phase-corrected prism coatings reduce internal interference to improve light transmission, contrast, and resolution
  • Highly reflective mirror coatings on prism surfaces reduce internal light loss and diffraction for brighter and sharper views
  • Anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission across the entire visible spectrum for accurate color rendition and improved contrast and clarity
  • Apparent angle of view approaches wide-angle to help minimize the appearance of visible hand shake that is common when holding high-power optics
  • 325' field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Closed-bridge configuration provides a solid and stable platform for the internal focusing mechanism
  • Large slip center focus wheel allows for precise focus control, even while wearing gloves
  • Right eye dioptric adjustment collar helps to compensate for individual eye prescription
  • 56-72mm interpupillary adjustment range
  • Twist-up/click-stop rubber eyecups for use with or without eyewear
  • 15.5mm eye relief helps to reduce eyestrain and improves viewing comfort
  • Comfortable 4.2mm exit pupil will cover most pupils in low light to help keep the full scene in view
Construction Details
  • Environmentally friendly Eco-Glass is made without lead and arsenic
  • Lightweight and durable fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate chassis
  • Chassis material is temperature resistant, preventing the expansion and contraction that is common with metal, which can cause the optical components to move out of alignment over time and prevent sharp focus
  • Textured black rubber armoring protects against bumps and impacts while providing a slip-resistant grip, especially in cold and wet weather
  • Textured, ergonomically placed palm pads improve grip stability and comfort
  • Nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and submersible to 3.3' (1m) for up to 10 minutes and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature changes and environmental conditions
  • One-piece tethered ocular rainguard protects eyecups from water pooling in them from rain or spraying water when hanging from the neck
  • Objective lens caps can be clipped to neck strap to avoid losing them during observation sessions
  • Weight: 23 ounces

Nikon 16003 reviews

10x42 ProStaff 7S Binocular (Black) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good performance at a reasonable price. The design, construction and optical performance of the Nikon 10 x 42 Prostaff 7S binoculars are very good for an item at its moderate price range. They will serve you well on any outdoors expedition; whether to an athletic event in a mega-stadium or just enjoying the great outdoors in a National Park. They are a good bring-along item you don't have to worry about damaging. The eyecup covers are poorly designed, being too large to fit securely and joined by an awkward, corrugated plastic bridge. A few minutes spent with a sharp knife to remove the bridge, and the use of black electrical tape to make the covers a snugger fit is well worth the effort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Pleased I bought these binoculars as a replacement for my old 7X35's and could not be happier. I use these for bird watching and wildlife viewing in the Ecuadorian Amazon and Galpagos. They are bright and provide a crisp image even in low light. I went back and forth between the Prostaff 7S and the Monarch line from Nikon and could not be happier with the Prostaff - and saved $100. Some reviewers have complained about the loose fit of the oblective covers. They come with a connector to the neck strap that for me works fine. The objectives are covered and protected but the covers come off easily to use the binoculars. A great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great binoculars!!! Was looking for binoculars to do bird watching. Tried out the ones recommended by Cornell lab of ornithology. They did not have the clarity or sharpness that I found with these binoculars. Very easy to adjust and balanced for steady viewing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best glass in class Purchased for hunting but found them best for every type of glassing. Used them in woods and they produced incredible 3D like images with crisp clean edges that popped! Lens caps leave a lot to be desired, common Nikon! For price point and intended use they are awesome. Did I say water and fog proof? Yep and they're not influenced by gravity either. They are light enough to carry all day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic pair of binoculars that I definitely recommend. I use these for work and have put them through a lot of use, and a fair amount of abuse, since purchasing them and they have held up superbly. Nice clear images in a variety of light conditions. I have not found comparable image quality in the same price and weight class.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy With Purchase Excellent feel with a rubberized coating to make it non-slip and safe to rest against a window to stabilize for distant viewing. Very easy to focus, produces a crisp image and offers a wide field of view. They are lightweight and easy to hold for enough time to actually study what you are seeing. I am very happy with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again and again Best bang for the buck I could find. Excellent product. I use them for hunting and fishing. I am an avid outdoorsman.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No Rating I click on three stars, with the waiver that I have no way of comparison, but you requirements demand a rating. My Bushnell glasses had just been found to have failed- sitting on the closet shelf. Thus, I was attracted to Nikon lifetime guarantee for the 10x42.The good price was no little factor. The Nikon glass fits the hand very well, and is well balanced. In truth, the power is too much for me - my hands are a bit too aged (along with my eyes) for the steadiness required for glasses of this power, which is no fault of the glass. It does focus well on birds. The viewing presents a clear picture through the lenses - I see no fog. As the saying has it, they seem to gather light well. Were I going into the back country hunting I would spend an additional $1000 for a more upscale glass, but for the price this glass is worth the money.
