The round plate with the level where the tripod head sits kept spinning when panning either way thus killing the benefit of my video heads drag. I unscrewed it and noticed the machined threads have so few turns that after tightening it fully, the threads pass each other so it keeps spinning when its supposed to be firm in place. Trying to fix this I shimmed it with an appropriately sized rubber spacer and it stopped spinning. But a new problem became tragically evident when after a few happy pans the whole thing snapped out of place as I watched my precious GH5 and 200mm lumix leica f2.8 and manffroto head fall on concrete.... the result was a hairline crack on the magnesium body of my gh5 next to the lens mount, the eye piece was damaged and thank god somehow the lens only got a minor scratch in the hood. I don't know if I got a unit that didn't pass inspection or all are the same. In any case beware and check yours thoroughly before entrusting your camera, lens and video head to this seemingly solid leveling base... I now use it as a paper weight!! Oben needs to machine a lot more deeper thread turns in there, maybe even use harder aluminum so this two pieces can hold really solid and even add screws like the ones that keep the head from spinning. not just dab a little lock tight in there....

Turning the lever frees it for movement in all directions. It's been a huge time saver for me and very easy to use.

Will this work with the Oben GH-30? I wonder if this will be sturdy enough for a gimbal with a long lens.
Asked by: Ed
Funny you should ask. My OBEN is under a MOVO carbon fiber gimbal with a Nikon D850 & 200-500mm lens on it, all sitting atop an older Manfrotto aluminum NA08. I think it's sturdy enough. It's plenty sturdy enough with a Hasselblad X1Dii and XCD 135 w/ converter on it!
