FLM CB-48 FT with SRB-60 Reviews

Best Ballhead for perfect drag, take the time to learn it.

I have many FLM ballheads, they work better than any other ballhead to get perfect drag so the head will stay put wherever placed. The key is to learn the system, slightly difficult to master but a few minutes of time, careful attention to details and it will become second nature. I sold all my RRS ballheads and kept FLM and my Arca Swiss D4. If you've every had a camera fall over as you loosen the drag or tightening control on many ballheads you know it's crucial to hold the camera tightly. Warranty support is exceptional on these ballheads, the distributor in the USA and Canada is very responsive to requests for help. Criticisms: the clamp is beautifully designed but needs a longer handle to tighten the plate, my plates require tightening, wiggling, tightening several times, but it is easy. Perhaps it's my plates, they are very thin so I can't be too critical of this clamp.

Cant seem to loosen it up enough. Feels like sandpaper. Do like the tilt lock function. I want to love it. Cant. Maybe theres something wrong with the one I got. Sending it back to try another.

Disapointed

User manual poorly written.  The main knob is annoyingly long to tighten.  It takes several turns to reach the point where its properly adjusted.  The Tilt function is something that requires a lot of practice to get used to.

a beautifully-made, solid tripod head without much fluff

After a lot of research and on-line advice from many users, I decided on this head. It ispretty much as describedon line: solid, beautifully-constructed, with some unusual features, including 15 degree detents for a panorama, a tilt capability and the ability to pre-set tension to allow a quick lock and unlock with very small movement of the lock knob. It fits my Gitzo 2541 tripod perfectly and seems to lock easily with no apparent droop. I prefer the QR clamp over FLM's proprietary clamp system, having had trouble with the clamp on another vendor's proprietary system. The QR clamp works perfectly with all of my not-perfectly-standard Arca-Swiss plates. The head and clamp come in a very unassuming box with a little padding from a foam sheet. There is a single instruction sheet; that's it. Fortunately, easily found videos help with learning how to use the head. It isn't cheap, but I plan on having this for a long time.

This is the best ball head I've used. I have other high-end ball heads from Really Right Stuff and Gitzo, and this FLM beats them all. Controls are easy to use, head position locks as expected and is easy to position for locking. I appreciate the click stops for pano, and the clamp's great. So far I've tried it on normal range zooms and a Canon 500mm f/4L (II) with an Extender 2 (III) and full-frame cameras and the head holds everything perfectly. I like the two bubble levels and that they're both visible with the camera mounted. This is something I wish all ball heads had, as opposed to the usual positions that get hidden by the camera. Build quality is excellent and I like the matte finish on the body and ball.
