Ricoh WG-30W overview

  • 1Description

The carbon gray WG-30W Digital Camera from Ricoh is a compact, durable point-and-shoot featuring a 16MP 1/2.3" Backlit CMOS sensor and a waterproof, shockproof, crushproof, coldproof, and dustproof construction for recording both high-resolution still imagery and full HD 1080p movies in a wide variety of conditions. The sensor combined with a newly designed image processor enables low-light sensitivity to ISO 6400 and continuous full-resolution shooting up to 1.08 fps and 10 fps continuous high speed shooting at lower resolutions. New to WG series is built-in Wi-Fi connectivity for wireless image transfer and remote control functions from your smart device.

A built-in 5x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 28-140mm to suit working in wide-angle and telephoto perspectives. Triple anti-shake protection minimizes the appearance of camera blur when photographing and recording video in difficult lighting conditions. High-speed video capture enables the creation of slow-motion videos and micro-HDMI port allows output of Full HD content to HD TVs and other compatible devices.

The rugged design elements of the WG-30W enable its use in conditions that would otherwise make it impossible to shoot including underwater to a depth of 40' and in temperatures as low as 14ºF. The camera can also withstand drops from up to 5' and pressure up to 220 lbf. It is also dustproof and offers anti-reflection protection on its 2.7" 230k-dot LCD monitor.

A highlight of its unique form factor are the 6 LEDs surrounding the lens which provide direct illumination when using the camera's enhanced Digital Microscope mode. This mode enables close focusing to 0.4". The LEDs also serve when shooting self-portraits and as a general illumination tool. A built-in flash unit is also supported as is a front-face clock, face detection technology, smile capture, blink detection and interval shooting. Several scene modes make it easy to capture sharp and color balanced photos in tough lighting including Underwater mode, Night Scene mode and Surf & Snow mode.

Rugged Design
The WG-30W provides durable, weather-proof construction to enable its use in harsh and trying conditions:

  • Waterproof to 40'
  • Shockproof to 5'
  • Crushproof to 220 lbf
  • Coldproof to 14°F
  • Dustproof to JIS 6 standard
16MP Backlit CMOS Sensor
The 16MP 1/2.3" backlit CMOS sensor, combined with a newly designed image processor, works to deliver high-resolution still imagery and full HD 1080p video at 30 fps. These two technologies also enable rich low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 6400 as well as continuous shooting rates of 1.08 fps at full resolution or 10 fps at 4 or 5MP for up to 30 frames.

Movies are recorded employing the H.264 recording format, and a micro HDMI port allows screening on compatible televisions and devices. High-speed movie recording is also possible up to 120 fps in the HD 720p format.
Ricoh 5x Optical Zoom Lens and Shake Reduction
The built-in 5x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-140mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit working in a wide variety of conditions. Five aspherical elements are incorporated into the lens design to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range and to produce sharp, clear imagery. An SP (Super Protection) coating has also been applied to the front lens element to offer greater protection and simplify cleaning of the lens.

Also contributing to enhanced use in dim lighting, sensor-shift type Shake Reduction image stabilization works to minimize the appearance of camera shake to better enable working with longer focal lengths and slower shutter speeds. This image stabilization system is further refined by way of digital Pixel Track and high ISO Shake Reduction modes to further alleviate camera blur.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity
The WG-30W provides a host of Wi-Fi functions, including remote shutter release, confirmation of recorded images, and setting of various shooting functions. The user can also wirelessly transfer images to a smartphone, as well as browse, organize and then upload them to social networking websites.
Other Camera Features
  • Six LED macro lights surround the lens to produce brighter, more even lighting when working with close-up subjects.
  • Enhanced Digital Microscope mode enables close focusing to 0.4".
  • A 2.7" 230k-dot LCD monitor provides means for live view monitoring, image review, and menu navigation. Its wide viewing angle supports easier use from both high and low working angles and anti-reflection coating provides better visibility in bright light.

Ricoh WG-30W reviews

WG-30W Digital Camera (Carbon Gray) is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fine underwater camera What sold me on this model was the internal flash which many other models lack. Ricoh remains faithful to giving consumers the best bang for their buck. I was able to connect an inexpensive slave strobe using a fiber optic cable thanks to the built-in flash, but needed to avoid full wide angle with the slave connected. I had no issues with the WiFi or battery life. The camera has few manual settings. Since I plan to use this while on SCUBA, I welcome the assisted settings. Exposure was a bit tricky with the slave strobe, but I was able to tone it down by taking the ISO setting off automatic. The images look clear and sharp but not as sharp as a full DSLR. You are not likely to find an underwater camera with these or better capabilities without spending thousands of dollars.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Camera failed first time out. The Camera failed first time out in less than 2 feet of water. While I probably wouldn't ever buy a Ricoh camera again... B&H's customer service department was prompt in answering the phone and in looking after my issue. 5 Stars for Service.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst possible experience for me Worst possible experience for me. Bought in Italy to take pictures underwater during my honeymoon , followed the instructions carefully and after few minutes less than a meter underwater the camera started to have strange problems like buttons not responding and steamy screen. After having dried the camera (as per instructions) i tested the battery inside and the memory card , and they were working fine. The camera turned to be unusable for the whole duration of the honeymoon. But the fun part comes now, i actually have the camera still on warranty and the shop i purchased it from (---) sent it to the Ricoh Italian Assistance for repair... guess what they returned the camera still broken writing that the watertight was working so they guessed it was my fault, this means no warranty.... so basically if the camera is faulty like mine they will rather tell a customer it's his fault and is the customer word against their so i basically got scammed . There are a lot of good and honest camera companies but RICOH, doesn't seem one of those. IF you need a camera to go underwater (sea ofc not the bath tube) i strongly suggest you not to buy this camera cause of the warranty scam

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No quick exposure adjustment button This would be an OK camera if it had a button on the body that allows you to adjust the exposure compensation. However, you have to go into the menu and scroll down and down until you get to the exposure compensation. In the meantime, the subject of your photo has changed on gone away. I would not recommend this camera to anyone for that reason.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My always must have camera I found out about this camera and bought it primarily for the 1CM macro capability with built-in LED lighting to photograph latent fingerprints and other tiny evidence. It does a phenominal job at that and then I found the iPhone 5 size to be such a plus that I will always have a camera that's better than my phone on me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The good, the bad and the ugly! I love that I can view the histogram and adjust the camera real-time, before taking a photo. I love that the lens is recessed and well protected from abuse, but the rear LCD screen is extremely delicate and protrudes from the back of the camera, so Ricoh's claim of it being a rugged camera is a joke. It got scratched the first time I put it in my shirt pocket. I hate that the non-Wi-Fi version wasn't available in the USA and that I can't turn off the battery draining Wi-Fi, even though I don't have a compatible device to connect to it. Sadly, no matter what settings I tried, all the photos I took were disappointing. Although the camera is rated at 16 megapixels, to me and other photographers who looked at them, the photos are less sharp than those I took with a 14 megapixel, 5 year old Nikon point and shoot, that cost half as much. Ironically, the slightly recessed LCD screen on my Nikon is in better shape after 5 years, than the Ricoh was after one use. I wouldn't even think about dropping it from five feet or testing it's 40 foot waterproof claim.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Completely Disappointed Purchased this a a christams gift for my wife as she had killed her Canon while on a trip to Mexico and refuses to use my Nikon D90 due to its complexity. I was originally going to replace her dead camera with another Canon or Nikon but the WF-30W caught my eye due to price point, feature set and reviews of the WG-20. What a Complete Mistake!!!! Lets starts with the pictures that the camera takes while in full auto mode. The pitures are either underexposed, overexposed, or just completley blown out. I was able to compensate some for these issues by taking it out of auto mode, but the images were still not very good, besides the reason why people buy this camera is so they can can just point and shoot. As for the wireless what genius decided to use the same IP address that in the IT industry is commonly reserved for routers. Out of all of millions of private addresses Ricoh uses a standard one. Due to this conflict good luck getting the wireless to work as it confuses the wirless device you are trying to connect to it. It can't figure out that you are trying to connect to the camera rather than the router. Even if you turn off your router more than likely the neighboor's router will also interfere. The only time I have been able to get the wirless working was when we were skiing. As long as we were on the slopes worked, soon as we hit the lodge quit working as again the wireless internet interfered.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good enough dental photos I use it only for dental. There's no adjustment, point and shoot. Intraoral photos are Ok quality but you can beat the price !
