Westcott D5 reviews

2-Light D5 Daylight Octabox Kit with Carry Case is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value for the money I specialize in newborn portraits and do my shoots on location. It's less stressful for the parents & baby. Also I some in cultures the baby doesn't leave home for the first few months. Because of this portability was a major factor in choosing my lighting solution. I knew from past experience that strobes were a bad idea. The flashes startle the baby, and eventually it upsets them. For me the 10x 27W bulbs are good enough as I rarely need shutter speeds above 250th/sec @ ISO 100. If you're looking for over 500th/sec you will need to use 50W bulbs. If you do intend to travel with the kit be sure to buy a carrying case for your bulbs.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Stands are worthless The light heads are well crafted and put out bright quality light. However the stands are too weak for the heavy lights. They actually bend forward like a kids fishing pole reeling in a shark. The lights can fall over very easily if they are bumped. It's a huge mismatch of quality heads with poor stands and an overall disappointment. I will have to buy new stands from another company. Bummer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Recently bought this kit to experiment with shooting with lights. Really haven't used them a lot, however the results of when I have used them are better then expected. I like that there is a switch for each bulb. The catch light I get is excellent. The only issue I have is I wish the stands were a little bit more sturdy, however I would buy this set again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all in one kit! Love using this kit in my home studio! It's perfect lighting and so convenient that you can control each bulb so you can control the amount of lighting you need.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No regrets. Very well-built beginner light kit! First let me say that I do not do a lot of studio type work. I was in need of updating my basic lighting set up and this Westcott kit fit my needs perfectly. The light heads are very well built and I love the ability to control each of the 5 light sockets individually. The inline switch is a nice option as well for times when I needed to leave the lights set up on location. With regards to the octaboxes, there is no speed ring, but they become very easy to set up after working with them once or twice. The carrying case is really solid and something I think should be included with every kit sold (regardless of Mfg). It carries everything this set up with extra room for a third or fourth light. That said, the only reason I did not give this kit 5 stars is because I wish the light stands were a little more heavy duty. I think they are decent stands, but when you extend them fully, you can see a significant bow in the vertical post when the light head and octabox are attached. I never felt they would tip over or break, but would be nice if they didn't bow so much. Beyond that, this is a very well built basic lighting set up that I would recommend for any beginner.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good quality of light, bad light stands The lighting kit puts out pretty good light. It's definitely bright, and I could film at f5.6 at around 6-10 feet @ ISO 400. The D5 head is actually pretty good. If it would take 3rd party modifiers, I would buy the head on it's own. Downsides, the lightstands are of sub-par quality. With the pole extended, the pole was bent. They don't have air shocks. I tried my speedlight stands, and my speedlight stands performed better than these light stands.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Price, features, and lights I call these our Talent lights which I use to shoot interviews. All my LED's are now used for green screen etc.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Stands are truly worthless Everything in this kit works great with the exception of the stands. The stands are totally inadequate to support the weight of the octabox lights, a safety hazard for sure. I just purchased a Promaster Deluxe Stand #LS-2, for $40, that works perfect for this light box head. Very disappointed with Wescott.
