Apple iMac overview

  • 1Description

Apple weds stunning 5K graphic visuals into their sleek 5mm thin design aesthetic with their 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display released in late 2014. With a 5120 x 2880 native resolution, the graphics on this iMac are clearer and more eye-catching than on any other previous model.

Apple also features a quad-core 4th-gen Haswell 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor into the mix, along with 8GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM. The four SO-DIMM slots are user accessible, so you have the option to upgrade the RAM up to 32GB for higher-end video or photo production needs.

To help with the enhanced display, this iMac also includes an AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics card with 2GB of GDDR5 memory. This powerful GPU was designed for high-level gaming, but will do double duty when editing videos or large resolution photos.

Other amenities include an integrated FaceTime HD camera, dual microphones, stereo speakers, a full-size keyboard with 78 keys, including 12 function keys and 4 arrow keys (inverted "T" arrangement), and a Magic Mouse.

Outfitted with 802.11ac Wi-Fi (backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n) for the speediest hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 4.0, as well as an SDXC card slot for extra storage, four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, and a Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) jack. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

For ports, the iMac has dual Thunderbolt 2 ports (which also double as Mini DisplayPorts) and four USB 3.0 ports. You'll be able to connect with various compatible components. If you would rather go wireless with your peripherals, you can use Bluetooth 4.0 technology where compatible.

27" Retina 5K IPS Display
Whether your iMac is in your studio, living room, or kitchen, the display is the focal point. With a 5120 x 2880 resolution, the iMac with Retina 5K display features 14.7 million pixels, which allows for crisp, clear text and support for 4K photos and videos. The IPS panel allows for wider viewing angles so more people can enjoy the Retina 5K display without having to crowd around it.
AMD Radeon M290X Graphics
All the pixels in the world won't do you any good if you can't quickly and efficiently command them into action. That's why the iMac with Retina 5K display features a dedicated AMD Radeon M290X graphics card with up to 3.5 teraflops of graphics compute power. So you experience stunning motion graphics, jaw-dropping visual effects, and 3D graphics on the built-in Retina 5K display.
4th Generation Haswell Intel Core i5 Processor
The iMac houses a quad-core 4th-gen Haswell Intel Core i5 processor. Its quad cores can reach a stock speed of 3.5 GHz. It can also be overclocked up to 3.9 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The 4th-gen Haswell Intel processor uses low voltage for better energy efficiency while still providing fast performance.
Impossibly Thin
The iMac with Retina 5K display maintains its 5mm profile, which is up to 40 percent less volume than the 2011 iMac. Using an advanced welding method called friction-stir welding, Apple was able to join the front and the back of the iMac together directly.
802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the iMac takes desktop Wi‑Fi speeds over the top. When it's connected to an 802.11ac base station - including AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule (both sold separately) - you can reach data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps. That's triple the previous 802.11n standard, which means you'll get up to three times faster Wi‑Fi. You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80MHz‑wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever. Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology is also built in, so you can connect accessories such as a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Thunderbolt 2
Expand the capabilities of your Mac. Connect high-performance peripherals. Transfer data at high speed. Even daisy-chain multiple devices. And the iMac with Retina 5K display has Thunderbolt 2, delivering twice the bandwidth - up to 20 Gbps - for fast data transfers. While the Thunderbolt 2 ports double as mini DisplayPorts, the iMac with Retina 5K display cannot be used as a standalone monitor like its predecessor. It can, however, be used simultaneously with an external display and can output up to a 3840 by 2160 resolution.
USB 3.0
With USB 3.0, you can transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every iMac comes with four USB 3.0 ports - with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 - and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod or digital camera.

    Apple iMac reviews

27" iMac with Retina 5K Display (Late 2014) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 83.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great machine, excellent price I took advantage of B&H's end-of-year clearance of the late 2014 Retina 5K iMac 27 to upgrade from a late 2009 unit and improve my workflow. I saved a significant amount of money, received one of the best computers on the market and enjoyed the consistently fine service from the knowledgeable and caring associates from B&H. If all businesses operated as well as B&H, this world would indeed be a better place and capitalism would have a sterling reputation. In regards to the iMac, trust the glowing comments left by others. No matter which iMac you decide to get, you will be satisfied (but spend the extra cash to avoid the 5,400-rpm hard drive and add your own memory if needed).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet deal - great service Purchased this iMac to replace one of the original 2007 iMacs. Great specs, file transfers ( using build in Migration Assistant software ) and set up really easy. Because of newer upgraded software had to spend a fair amount of time looking at the various default settings (particularly for privacy and security). Gorgeous display. Spent HOURS looking at old photos and marking them for editing. So much easier on this brighter, more dense display... old images look even better. Came with old operating system (two generations back) ... which I expected with a Late 2014 model. Added a few hours of extra wait-time but acceptable none the less.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Editing dream - superior machine I started to get into photography just a year ago. I wasn't going to mess around. I purchased top notch gear along with serious editing tools. This along with a Drobo 5D has me creating work that many take years to create. If your images look great on this machine, they will look like a dream on the rest of the world's devices. Simply amazing. Digital noise? You can see much more and edit it away. Text? Amazing. I use mine along with a Spyder 5 calibration device for accurate colors. Check out some images at pexphoto.com.Just get this machine. It's amazing. I7 with 32 GB of ram after Crucial upgrade. It's simply amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Beastly Rig and Magnificent Amazing computer -- great price and service. I got this model over the new one because it comes with a much better fusion drive (128gb flash) than the newer one, for less dough. I'm sure the new screen is a *little* better, but come on: this retina thing is oo la la gorgeous, and so crazy bright I'm wearing shades....Finally, the lower price allowed me to add 32gb of ram for an additional 130 and stay within my budget. Let's see: fusion drive with 128 flash; retina jaw dropping screen; old Mighty Mouse (better than the itsy bitsy new one); 32 gb ram; apple ease of set up and all that -- check check check. And B&H with the lightning quick delivery. Conclusion: Great rig for the foreseeable future. Love it -- thanks BH!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Computer - Great Company (B&H) First, B&H ended up being such a good deal, (with the $ discount and even just with the tax savings), that I went ahead and got the 5K system. The computer was delivered on time and in perfect condition - very well packaged.Second, Performance - I got the standard 5K system but added 16GB of RAM. I am upgrading from a mid-2007 iMac. A couple examples of the performance improvment: using Handbrake to back up my DVD library, a process that used to take 1.5 to 2.5 hours per movie on my old computer now takes 11 minutes; putting a meta wrapper on each movie used to take 4 to 7 minutes each on the old computer, now takes 9 seconds on the new iMac! The screen is beautiful and easy on my old eyes. Needless to say, I am very happy with the computer and glad that I went with the Retina display.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best imac value I've been using this display at work since beginning of 2015 and I'm very pleased with it. With 16gb of ram it performs incredibly. B&H price (such a great deal) allows me to justify getting it for home use. I decided to order extra memory (also from BH) to upgrade it to 32gb. It took 5 minutes to change the memory per apple instruction. I mainly used this for research work in being able to read multiple books, articles, and even doing software development on the same display at the same time at super speed. The other nice thing is it gives me the same look across all my other devices: mac book pro, ipod touch, and ipad with retina screen. I always buy my expensive apple devices from BH due to price and service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 27 5k iMac (late 2014) is a great computer I upgraded from a mid-2007 iMac to this 2014 model with 5k display. Migration of my old files and programs from a Time Machine backup was easy, as was updating the OS from Yosemite to El Capitan. The 2014 iMac is very fast with a 128gb ssd in the fusion drive. That's why I bought the 2014 model because the 2015 has much less ssd. The 5k 27 display is fantastic and a great help for the eyes. The default print size us very small. However, this can be easily adjusted in system preferences. This is great computer for school and home. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast I needed an update to my MacBook Pro 2011, using Adobe CS 6 and more. When Apple didn't announce an update in March 2016, I had to act. This was a real deal: a late 2014 new, in the box, for $600 less than original price. I chose this model almost exclusively because of the ability to upgrade RAM and because the RAM is less expensive than the current iMac model. I also wanted the fusion drive and not flash or the SATA. This model is just right. It's super fast, compared to my older Macs and does everything with ease.
