M-Audio M-TRACK II overview

  • 1Description

The MTRACK II from M-Audio is a two-channel portable USB audio and MIDI interface that is designed to work with virtually any DAW or music production software. Intended to offer a versatile set of options for beginner and veteran musicians alike, the interface is equipped with XLR microphone and balanced 1/4" line combo inputs on each channel.

Each microphone input has switchable 48V phantom power for using condenser microphones, and the balanced line inputs can be used to connect gear such as keyboard workstations or drum machines. Each line input also has a guitar switch, that, when engaged, changes it from normal input impedance to Hi-Z. This allows for connecting a guitar directly for recording and processing.

The interface Includes Ableton Live Lite software for recording, mixing and producing music using a Mac or Windows computer, while the included Waves plug-in bundle can add a professional finish to any production.

Two XLR+1/4" combo inputs with selectable phantom power for recording vocals, guitars, bass, and more
Two balanced 1/4"main outputs with dedicated level control
Zero-latency monitoring with USB/Analog Direct Balance control
Channel-specific LED VU meters provide real-time visual feedback of the audio signal
Headphone out with independent level control for private recording and mixing
USB-powered connectivity and solid metal construction for on-the-go use
Audio recording with up to 24-bit/48kHz resolution
Includes Ableton Live Lite for recording, mixing, and producing music with a Mac or Windows computer

    M-Audio M-TRACK II reviews

MTRACK II - Portable USB Audio Interface is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the ticket for what I needed I produce all my radio spots for three clients in my office/studio was looking to upgrade my equipment. I saw the II online and sent the link to one of my radio station engineers to see if it would fulfill what I needed to upgrade my sound. They said it would, so I ordered it. I use it with a Shure M7B and Adobe Audition. It was easy to hook up and get running. My sound is now amazing and radio station quality! When I retire, I plan on including the II for my home studio to do voice over work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product This was my first M-Audio purchase and I have been very pleased with it. I have hooked up both my KRK speakers to it in order to run it on my Mac Book Pro for video production work. It is a solid built product and has been working for me fine for several months. Overall the interface has full filled my needs. For a basic unit it gets the job done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to manage sound of my desktop computer Finally. Now I can control audio from my iMac in a way that gives control over headphones and external speakers in an easy, functional way. Very straightforward -- however, note that your keyboard audio controls (on a Mac) will be disabled. But you now have nice analog controls. You may have to select M Track in menus in some software (like Premiere Pro).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Under-Rated; great PRE's If you are looking for something like a Scarlette 2i2 or UR22, this is a very viable alternative. I personally think it is better than either, particularly if you are running a low output microphone like the SM7B and are on sub-$700 budget. Don't waste your money on a Scarlette 2i2 + Cloudlifter .. get the M-Audio. It will take you a long ways. -No special drivers needed; works even with an Android phone via a OTG adapter. -it's max 55dbu of gain is the perfect amount needed to drive a Shure SM7B -Less pre-amp noise than a Mackie Mixer or Sound Devices USBPre2. In fact, adding a Cloudlifter in front does more harm than good to the noise levels. -The pres sound pretty transparent; it has a good amount of mic impedance on the input. I'm quite happy with the sound personally, although the Cloudlifter is ever so slightly warmer sounding. -Comes with audio plugins that total in value the price of the unit. -Feels well built; no problems or concerns there. USB cable doesn't come loose or anything. ================= As for downsides..... -It needs to be unplugged/plugged back in every time my computer wakes up from sleep mode; else it doesn't work on my main computer. -It runs on USB power, but it doesn't do a good job of filtering the power signal of noise.... so if you connect this to a powered USB hub or a USB port that is shared with some other devices, it often will add a lot of noise to the pre-amps. I'm sure this fact has ruined this devices reputation a bit. I connected it to a fanless Gigabyte Brix mini-computer (single dedicated Intel USB 3.0 port) though, and it is now PPURRFECT. -The pre-amps are logarithmic in gain it sounds like, so that extra last 10-db comes out of no where it seems like. Not much fine control at the high-gain end. -I get a sense that the headphone amp isn't the best -- it's not super loud and it adds noise that isn't there. -There is no mono switch for the headphone jack, like the Sound Devices USBPre2 has. -Same goes for limiters --- there is no hardware limiter in it, which is typical, but with some mics I've blown my ear drums out when the mic clipped. -There is no option with the installed Windows Drivers to record single-channel (either the official drivers or the default drivers) -- this is really annoying if you want to do something like VoIP as you will be recording stereo but one channel will be dead. -There is a four-segment LED, but I'd be happier if there were a few more. I don't record near 0-db, but rather closer to -18db, so it really only is useful for when I'm setting up a new mic to see if there is any volume. I'll use my DAW othertimes though, so its not a big deal. -Only 1-headphone jack out. It would of been pretty cool if they had a 3.5mm jack out also, in case you were podcasting with a friend. I know you can use a splitter or external headphone amp, but meh. -Phantom power button is global; its on for both mics or off for both mics. Not a big deal, but something to be aware of. -There definitely is a latency on the audio via USB; so I'm glad there is a direct-mode option. I wish there was a way to lower the latency, but can't find one. Firewire or a DSP interface might be the way to go there if that is a concern. -main outs are not balanced (TRS only); which is expected and not really a biggie -- but it would be cool if they were.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Interface, yes - Pre-Amp, no! Once I gave up on expecting M-Audio product to have a decent pre-amp built into their Interfaces, it works just fine. If you do use their pre-amp side of the device, low gain, high gain noise.
