For capturing audio the AT8024 Stereo/Mono Camera-Mount Microphone by Audio Technica can be used in several environments, on DSLR and video cameras, for applications such as weddings, conferences, sports events, and more. It features a selectable line-cardioid mono, and internally matrixed mid-side stereo mode and provides the flexibility to focus the recording on a single sound source, or to widen the field for more sonic realism. The AT8024 can deliver much improved audio than the supplied camera's internal microphone.

question
This mic looks like it has to be mounted in a vertical position to get proper L/R sound, correct? i.e., if I was to mount it from a left or right-facing cold shoe mount, I'd be recording an up/down stereo image, correct? Basically, can the mic be rotated in its shock mount, or no?
This shotgun microphone (a.k.a. interference tube microphone) is highly directional; the longer the slotted tube the narrower the angle of sound pickup. The tube must be pointed directly at the subject that is making the sound that you want to record, and the 'off-axis' sounds are cancelled out, with the longer slotted tubes cancelling a greater amount of sound coming from the sides. question
Will this record audio only and does it write to the memory that's in your camera ?
This is a microphone. If your recorder has a mic in input then the sound this mic picks up will be recorded to your recorder, camera, or camcorder. I've tried a few and this one is a very capable microphone that will surpass the poor microphones normally found in cameras and camcorders. The unit uses a AA battery to handle the power needed and that is a big plus. It mic can operate as a mono shotgun mic, or a stereo mid-side mic with a built in decoder that makes mid-side work and gives a more spacious (more ambiance) sound than a mono shotgun. I own dozens of microphones and this is a worthy investment for those seeking better audio than the on board camera/camcorder mics can manage. It is well engineered and worth the investment, in my opinion. TM Soundview

question
What is a good boom pole for a mic like this?
After purchasing the AT8024, I received an email from B&H suggesting the following two boom poles each of which goes for $49: Cavision Mixed Fiber Mini Boom Pole (7.5') B&H # CASGP323 MFR # SGP323 OR Rode Micro Boompole - 3-Section Boom Pole B&H # ROMICROBOOMP MFR # MICRO BOOMPOLE . I don't have any experience with boom poles but thought I'd pass this info along to you. As the previous answer stated, you'll need an extension cable to span the length of the boom pole plus enough extra to plug into your audio recording equipment or camera.
