Zenelli Carbon ZX Overview

The CARBONZX Carbon Fiber Gimbal Head with Accessories from Zenelli is a lightweight head made from 100% completely hollow carbon fiber. It includes a Save Lenses Lever, and a Quick-Release Lever. Hard-anodized aluminum and stainless steel hardware help ensure high resistance to wear and tear, and corrosion.

The gimbal has a full 360° range of motion for both the pan and tilt, and separate locks with tension control for each. The clamp is compatible with most Arca-type dovetail plates, and is opened and closed via a thumb screw. Grooves in the clamp allow for use of plates with safety stop screws. The base of the clamp can be adjusted 4.8" up and down to balance and adjust the nodal point.

The Quick-Release Lever allows you to quickly open and close the gimbal head's Arca-type clamp. The width of the lever can be adjusted and locked in place for different width plates, and a safety lock prevents the clamp from accidentally opening and releasing the plate. The Save Lenses Lever is mounted onto the vertical arm of the clamp and when activated, prevents the clamp from tilting forward, which might smash the lens into the tripod. This is especially useful when changing camera bodies. A padded shock absorber on the lever protects the carbon fiber from being damaged.

Zenelli Carbon ZX Reviews

Same features with Custom Brackets gimbal at 1/3 the price

A key feature is the locking mechanism that keeps the lens from crashing down when the camera is removed for any reason, such as adding or removing a teleconverter. Custom Brackets $400 gimbal head has this same feature and is easier to adjust the lens height to get the center axis as the best height.

This Carbon finer Gimbal Head works flawless and the weight savings for me is worth it's weight in gold. I found the unit to be of excellent craftsmanship and does all it is written up to be. I would recommend this Gimbal to any of my friends without hesitation

Overrated!

Maybe I'm just spoiled by companies like Really Right Stuff, Wimberley and Kirk Enterprises but for the money this thing cost I expected much better manufacturing. First, the thick glossy lacquer covering the carbon fiber arm, not only is it slippery and highly reflective but it's ssoo 1990's style. Get with the times, Zenelli! Every other manufacturer is using satin finish carbon fiber layups/pultrusions. Next is the pan lock knob which is poorly thought out. When loosened all the way it still tends to rotate clockwise just a tad by itself (when you let go) and re-apply a very small amount of tension preventing free spinning pans. Also, the knob itself can interfere with the carbon fiber arm if it's not positioned perfectly vertical. Luckily, Zenelli added the ability to pull the knob out and reposition it, sort of like a ratcheting knob. The panning doesn't feel uniform either. Through a 360 degree pan you notice spots where it wants to grab slightly. The tilt knob is nice and works great. Next, the forged aluminum vertical arm which is lightweight has some slightly sharp edges and corners around the embossed logo. It has a dovetail that the cradle slips onto but sadly it's not compatible with my Really Right Stuff PG-CC cradle clamp unlike some people have claimed. Perhaps earlier models where but the current dovetail on the Zenelli vertical arm is slightly too narrow. I would have to overtighten the knob on the PG-CC and possibly damage it to get a satisfactory bite on the vertical arm. No thanks. Finally, the cradle is also poorly thought out. It looks to be machined instead of forged (which is fine) but also has sharp edges on the underside and areas without anodizing. Looks to me like they anodized the cradle and then did some secondary machining afterwards. There was even one spot with a machining burr. The quick release lever for the clamp is finicky and feels cheap. I might be wrong but the lever itself looks to made of aluminum rather than stainless steel like the one on the RRS PG-CC. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to adjust the tension. Just the feel of the lever action was undesirable. It felt cheap, loose and noisy. Not precise, quiet and smooth and like my RRS lever clamps. To me it feels like the cam action of the lever is galling on its adjacent components. I decided to return this gimbal and stick with my trusted Wimberley WH-200 with RRS PG-CC cradle. B&H being the professional company they are promptly credited my card. Thanks B&H.

Having used this for 4 years this is an update. It took me a awhile to set the clamping mechanism ( QR lever etc) and for this have it 4 stars - worked it out pretty wuickly and now think this is by far and away the best gimbal out there Expensive less but super light ribust and a joy to use. I have Joni Wimberley and all the rest in the search for perfection - this is it Fantastic product I just ordered the new QR system for Zenelli to see if it improves perfection. Buy it - you will have no regrets

This sure is an attractive looking gimbal, and all your friends will love to touch it :) - but I find it a bit disappointing - in actual use. It's certainly very attractive, and the shiny carbon fiber is very pretty - but I find it much bulkier than the other gimbal I prefer, the Jobu Jr. 3 Deluxe - and Zenelli is wrong when they claim this (or their smaller other gimbal) as the 'world's lightest.' The Jobu is actually only 1.5 lbs!!!! This Zenelli gimbal is slightly over 2 lbs (I weighed it on an accurate mail scale). Zenelli claims this is 2 lbs or less. They're wrong. No big deal, but I just find this bulky, and sadly, the quick release lever didn't live up to the hype. I was really looking forward to it - and I thought it would make attaching the lens quicker and safer and less trouble - but the lock down lever is a pain to use, even though the safety feature of needing to press the second button to release the lens is a good idea to prevent accidentally disconnecting your lens from the gimbal when moving it. This gimbal looks so good you might almost want to take it to bed with you when you first get it home - but it's a bit disappointing in actual use. I won't be keeping mine. But I will say, on a positive note, that the little 'switch' that locks the arm in place is a nice touch. Quick to use. Great when you're moving your camera setup. And that 'teardrop' shaped knob that locks the gimbal to prevent rotating around the vertical access operates nicely.

I've had this gimbal awhile but just added the updated clamp plate Light, silky smooth, brilliantly constructed and a joy to use. Throw in the the retainer that means I'm not constantly tightening and I tightening and can preserve my set tension, a built in bubble level and a true centering of the lens when panning and nothing comes close.. I have a Wimberley and some other gimbals bir now all sold I currently have 3 Zenelli heads of different configscarbon feet for all my big lenses and I constantly amazed how good their gear is. Perfection

question

Hi, I'm interested in this Zenelli . Can you get the Zenelli Acra Swiss quick release plate with the stops and bubble level built into the plate. And do you have a Zenelli Brochure showing accessories that you can send me ? FJD Sporting Collectables, Frank J. Dattalo Jr., 400 Sharon Drive, Rochester, NY 14626
Asked by: Frank J. D.
The head does not really have any other additional accessories but what is listed and that is part of the head. And the only item it does not come with is the quick release plate. The plate is Arca-Swiss style and there are many plates available and it as to the correct one it depends on the lens you will be using on the head.

question

Will a Wimberly or a Really Right Stuff quick release stage fit on this Gimbal?
Asked by: John
Some owners the older Zenelli model have been able to fit a RRS cradle but not on the current model. I just received my Zenelli ZX yesterday and have confirmed it does NOT fit properly. The dovetail of the vertical arm of the Zenelli is slightly too narrow for the RRS cradle and thus the knob cannot be tightened enough to make up for the extra play.

question

I plan on using this with a Nikon 400 2.8E and would like to inquire if it will mount on this out of the box? Any other accessories I would need? THanks!
Asked by: Jonathan M.
This is a really nice gimbal head. I have a Nikon 600mm lens that I use with this head. I don't know what foot your 400mm Nikon lens has but I needed to add an Arca-Swiss plate to the 600mm lens foot to mount it on this gimbal head. Really Right Stuff has foot replacements and plates for Nikon lenses with Arca Swiss profiles and I'm sure they have one for your lens. I guess B&H must have them, too. I used the gimbal head as delivered for several months but ended up changing the clamp for the RRS PG-CC: Cradle Clamp which I think has a better grip. I hope this helps.
