Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 Fisheye Overview

The 12mm f/2.8 ED AS IF NCS UMC Fisheye Lens for Sony E Mount from Rokinon provides a 180° diagonal angle of view on full-frame cameras for an ultra-wide angle, distorted perspective that is useful for architectural interiors, landscapes and creative experimentation in any photographic application. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light situations and enables some measure of shallow depth of field control.

The lens' sophisticated optical design consists of 12 lens elements arranged in 8 groups including three elements made of low dispersion ED glass and two aspherical lens elements to minimize coma and chromatic aberrations. Highly effective nanocrystal anti-reflection (NCS) coating applied together with UMC coatings improve light transmission and reduce ghosting. Its internal focus system enables its compact design and keeps the front element from extending during focus.

As a manual focus, manual aperture lens, it offers a wide, easy to grip focus ring and bright aperture, distance and depth of field markings. A removable petal-shaped lens hood is included.

An ultra wide-angle fisheye lens with a 12mm focal length on full-frame cameras and an 18mm equivalency when used on APS-C format cameras. Its distorted perspective is useful for interiors, landscapes, group shots and many creative wide-angle applications.
Extra low dispersion and aspherical lens elements reduce aberrations for sharp, color-accurate imaging.
Nano crystal coating and ultra multi-coating on the lens elements improves light transmission and reduces ghosting and flare.
Manual focus lens with an internal focus system and wide, rubberized focus ring.
Manual aperture control with bright markings for aperture, distance and depth of field.
Sturdy metal barrel with removable petal-shaped lens hood.

I wanted a good fish eye at a reasonable price. Did some research and the reviews seemed good on this one. It didn't disappoint! Still getting the hang of it, but so far it does great night time and landscape shots. Hope to do some portraits with it soon too. Manual lens is very easy to use.

This is a very fun lens. Was quite surprised and pleased how sharp this is. With this focal length it's very easy to manually focus. For almost every shot I just set it on infinity and leave it there. Only when I need to focus on a very close subject do I need to adjust this. Aperture is also manual and very easy to set. This lens feels very solid and does some dramatic landscape and sky photos. Very pleased.

Extreme Wide Angle Lens

This is a fun lens to work with. It is NOT autofocus, but it's very easy to use. Just be careful not to get your feet or fingers into the field-of-view. I can stand almost right next to a tall tree or structure and still get it all in the picture. the lens feels solid, the shots (so far) are very crisp. I love this lens.

Quality Was Evident After The First Shot

I’ve been wanting a fisheye for a while and after some research and comparison, decided on the Rokinon 12mm.  I have only used the lens once.  I had great results, and am very pleased with the purchase.       The artistic and creative possibilities are what influenced me to buy this lens most.  Second was Samyang / Rokinon's reputation and quality. Price was the 3rd factor. Build quality is excellent for a lens in this class and price range.  The lens feels solid and controls are precise.  No issues with mounting on my 6D2.  Optical clarity is there, even at wide aperture center out to the corners.  The removable petal hood is a bonus.  The manual recommends using the lens in M mode.  This worked perfectly.  I also used in in Tv and Av modes and again it worked well.  Nothing not to like here.  12mm ultra wide angle with 180* view. It's a great special purpose lens, that doesn't break the bank.

Watch your toes

Was in the market for a fish eye and read an article about photographing the milkyway that suggested this lens. Works nice on my D780. Love the wide angle and crispness of the manual focus. Just have to be careful not to get your toes in the shot.

Extremely Sharp - Great Value

Despite being a manual focus lens, this Rokinon is extremely easy to use with Sony's Focus Peaking and magnification feature. It is very sharp, even at f/2.8. Tests show its field of view is actually wider than some of the competition's lenses having a 10mm focal length. Using the Fisheye-Hemi Plug-In from Imadio Software, you can quickly correct vertical line distortion, mimicking the appearance of a non-fisheye lens. You can't go wrong with this lens for both fisheye and more general wide-angle purposes. You can spend much more on some of the competitors' lenses, but you won't get better results than those provided by this lens.

This lens has 180 degree field of view on full frame. What is the field of view on APS-C?
Asked by: Tony
Thank you Reuben. 124 degrees on Sony APS-C is a really useful field of view. Also makes it worthwhile getting the 8mm f2.8 APSC lens as well, for those times when a full 180 degrees is needed.

question

Picked up this lens for my NEX-7 but realize the lens has no sensor contacts for the camera to identify what lens is connected to the body. I can manually focus, but cannot take a picture. An error message comes up on the screen saying, camera cannot identify the lens and to mount it on the camera properly. Anyone have any info about the lens and the Nex-7?Any help would be greatly appreciated... alternatives, etc...please Thank you, AT

Has anyone used this lens with an IR converted mirrorless camera? Wondering if it still holds up when used for IR photography.

As the above is a specific-use question, unfortunately, we are not aware of any specific tests with this particular lens attached to an IR-converted mirrorless camera, so the results may vary.

question

What is the difference between 2 at B&H with slightly different model numbers and price. the 2 for Sony FE mount 12mm f2.8 fisheye are model# 12M-E which is also the current model listed on Rokinon's site and the more expensive SY12M-E?
Asked by: Lawrence
Samyang is the name of the company that makes not only its brand but the Rokinon brand as well. Thus these two lenses are identical except the Rokinon has the extra UMC lens coating. It is probably not a huge difference if compared side by side. However, if it were me, I would spend the extra because I would want every advantage I could get.
