Formatt Hitech FC77ND1.5 overview

  • 1Description

The Formatt-Hitech 77mm Firecrest ND 1.5 Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 5-stop reduction in exposure. This 1.5 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multi-coating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multi-coating is also scratch-resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

ND 1.5 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 5-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.
The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multi-coating is water- and scratch-resistance for greater overall durability.
Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Formatt Hitech FC77ND1.5 reviews

77mm Firecrest ND 1.5 Filter is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent 5 stop ND-highly recommended This is a top of line ND filter--! I bought it for controlling aperture on very bright days and for long exposure when shooting waterfalls. No-color cast and excellent picture quality, as would be expected since this filter is made with Schott Superwite glass. The front filter thread accepts my other 77mm filters without issue. Excellent quality, I would buy this filter again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best filter ever! I purchased the Formatt Hitech Firecrest 0.9 (3 stops) and 1.5 (5 stops) ND filters for a recent photo shoot up along Minnesota's north shore of Lake Superior. My goal was to photograph waterfalls and the big lake and have fun experimenting with slow shutter speeds to render the water silky smooth. Online reviewers were unanimously praising the Formatt Hitech filters so I ultimately decided to purchase two filters from them, especially since B&H was selling them at half price. These are the best filters I have ever used and I have owned a few! The glass is super sharp, and has absolutely ZERO color cast. In other words, no need to waste time tweaking your WB in post-processing. My Nikon D810 has no trouble accurately focusing through the dark glass even when I stack together a polarizer and an ND filter or my two ND filters. No vignette effect is noticeable with my 17-35mm set at its widest with the above combo. However, I tried to be cute and add my Lee filter holder with a graduated 2-stop ND filter to the aforementioned combo but that resulted in some serious vignette at 17mm. Depending on the situation, I either had to remove the CPR or the ND or opted to choose a narrower field of view to eliminate the vignette. The filter threads easily on the front lens and comes off just as easily without sticking. The f-stop factor is accurate (the image will be darkened by exactly 3 stops with a 0.9 ND, 5 stops for a 1.5 ND, etc...). I could not be happier with this purchase.
