Formatt Hitech FC77ND1.8 overview

  • 1Description

The Formatt-Hitech 77mm Firecrest ND 1.8 Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 6-stop reduction in exposure. This 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multi-coating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multi-coating is also scratch-resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

ND 1.8 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 6-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.
The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multi-coating is water- and scratch-resistance for greater overall durability.
Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Formatt Hitech FC77ND1.8 reviews

77mm Firecrest ND 1.8 Filter is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too fragile. Broke when fell onto dirt 3 feet below tripod. I cannot recommend this filter. In my very first attempt to use it, when attempting to screw it onto my lens (lens on a tripod and tripod set only about 3 feet above a dirt ground base), it slipped from my hand, fell to the DIRT ground and broke into 4 pieces. Another thinner ring came out of the very thin main ring. Anything this fragile, to me, is unacceptable. Again, I was on a dirt base, no rocks, no pebbles, simply dirt ground. Sadly, even though it is within the 30-day window for returns, I cannot return a broken filter. $$$ wasted!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome even for Infra-red photography I bought this ND filter specifically for infrared hotography. I have other brand filters, but most of them do not affect the color (because they allow infrared through, I believe). But I had noticed that my other Firecrest ND filter did indeed darken pictures taken with my converted camera (Lifepixel, SuperColor 590nm) I use it mostly for Infrared B&W. I would buy this again anytime

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quickly becoming my go-to filter This and maybe the 1.2 are quickly become my favorites for doing long exposure work around dawn/sunrise/sunset/golden hour shots. Can't beat high quality Schott Superwite Glass and coatings that don't degrade like other company's filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from really neutral Sometime ago I bought a very expensive variable ND's was not neutral, I tested some others (just put them in front a IR modifies camera and you will see ) and they are not neutral. these are neutral!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Filter The ND filter is great. Well made, easy to attach and remove and has no color cast. Not the first one of these I have and it won't be the last.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from unacceptably fragile, difficult to screw on Sometimes, a presumed good thing can be taken too far. Such is the case with this filter based on my experience. Thinness, ultra thin, appears to be Formatt Hitech's selling point with this lens. However, here is the downside: due to its extreme thinness there is very little to grip when trying to screw onto a lens. (And I am a female with average size hands/fingers). Perhaps, the far more negative downside to the ultra thinness is the filter's INABILITY to fall a mere 3 feet onto straw-covered dirt (no stones, pebbles) without breaking. This is what happened on my very first attempt to use this filter. Tripod set 3 feet from straw-covered dirt, difficulty screwing it onto lens, slipped from my hand, fell 3 feet onto the straw-covered dirt and broke into four pieces, entirely popped out of a double ring encasement. No, I do not recommend this ultra-thin filter. $$$ wasted!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Perfect ND filter. Not color cast, which apparently is an exception for this type of filters. Easy to install and take out. Next step is to buy the ND 3.0 for longer exposure.
