Formatt Hitech Firecrest Overview

The Formatt-Hitech 77mm Firecrest ND 1.8 Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 6-stop reduction in exposure. This 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multi-coating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multi-coating is also scratch-resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

ND 1.8 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 6-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.
The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multi-coating is water- and scratch-resistance for greater overall durability.

I bought this to pair with my Polar Pro 2-5 VND PMII for times where 5 stops still isn't enough, such as a recent scene in the middle of the day where we were shooting around T1.9, and it works fantastically. No color shift, no vignette. Great for the price.

I have a full set of square ND filters from Formatt HItech and needed one for shooting motorsports that was a round screw on filter. It is as color neutral as the square filters. Great quality.

You need this!!

This is a very great ND, especially for cameras that suffer from IR pollution like the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. This 6-Stop ND helps when shooting at low f-stops. As mentioned, it comes IR cut to help with IR pollution. You need this in your camera bag.

Great optics

Another ND filter in my tool kit. Different brands can produce somewhat different effects. Some people like it, other's don't. I prefer to look at it as another option when making my picture. It is nice to have options. Optical quality is awesome, and that is what matters.

Great for IR photography

Most ND filters do not block IR at the level suggested by their rating so images are overexposed if you use an LE calculator. These Firecrest ND filters are great for long exposure IR shooting with the resulting exposures very near what the calculator suggests.

Asked by: Julian
I've used it on my Nikkor 16-35mm without any vignetting due to the filter's low profile.

question

Is this filter a discontinued model? Nobody else has it at this price.
Asked by: Stephen
As far as I know it is not however, due to the Eclipse event this year, it took about 3 months to arrive. Well worth the wait though, I love it. I have 2 of these, one is a 13 stop and the other is a 16 stop filter. Both top notch quality and you can't beat the price on this site.
