Key Features
  • Designed for Solar Photography
  • 6-Stop Neutral Density Filter
  • Increase Exposure Length
  • Greater Control Over Exposures
The Formatt-Hitech 82mm Firecrest ND 1.8 Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 6-stop reduction in exposure. This 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 1.8 Overview

The Formatt-Hitech 82mm Firecrest ND 1.8 Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 6-stop reduction in exposure. This 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multi-coating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multi-coating is also scratch-resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

ND 1.8 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.
The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multi-coating is water- and scratch-resistance for greater overall durability.

Great filter, best I've ever used.

GREAT filter; subpar case

The filter performs spectacularly! I have nothing but praise for it. But the case; not so much. The foam inside the case does not fit the filter, but thankfully it is too big (way too big) and not too small, so it was simple to mark out the diameter of the filter and then trim out the layer of foam to make this fit properly in the case. Minor gripe... but focusing on the filter, it is EXCELLENT!

Works great with my Sigma/Canon glass.

Not Perfectly Neutral, But Pleasant

When I first got the filter out of the case, I was really surprised at how thin it is. Super portable and comes with a hard carrying case that makes traveling with it a bit easier if you don't already have a filter pouch. Like the title says, not perfectly neutral. It has a very slight amber/green tint. Even shooting compressed video, though, this is pretty easily corrected and almost unnoticeable. Personally, I think it's actually kind of pleasant and it's more in line with how I edit my photos anyways, so it's rarely a nuisance for me.

question

what is the extent of the 2.stop shading...halfway, third.way of the circle ?...pics are not helping..
Asked by: Grzegorz R.
It should be a standard half-filled graduated ND filter, but we agree the photo is very bad and does not properly show this.

Safe for solar eclipse photography?
Asked by: Rong
This filter would not be safe for shooting a solar eclipse. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest 100mm Holder Kit with 5.4 (18 Stop) Eclipse Filter B&H # FOFCHKE54100 is a suitable filter.

question

Is this compatible with the Cokin P holder? Would it give me enough coverage for a 67mm leans thread? (35mm wide lens based on 35mm frame) Or would I need to get 85mm x 85mm size filter ? Thank you
Asked by: Nikolay E.
No, it is not. The Formatt Hitech 67 x 85mm Firecrest ND 4.8 Filter would be compatible for use with the Formatt Hitech 67mm Aluminum Modular Filter Holder, B&H # FOMAH67. The above filter and holder are similar to Cokin A-series holder and are only good for lenses with filter threads from 36mm to 62mm in size. If you need a similar filter for use with a Cokin P filter holder, then the Formatt Hitech 85 x 85mm Firecrest ND 4.8 Filter, B&H # FOFCIRN4.8CP, would instead be the correct filter for your needs. The Cokin P-series accommodates lenses with filter threads from 48mm to 82mm in size, and would work with a lens with 67mm filter threads.

Will this filter fit inside the Wine Country ...

Will this filter fit inside the Wine Country Camera 150 mm x 150 mm filter vault? I see the Formatt Hitech is 4 mm thick. I think the Wine Country Blackstone filters are 2mm thick but I can find no information to verify this.
Asked by: Mike
The Wine Country filter holders have 2mm slots, so that filter is not compatible.
