Sirui VA-5 overview

  • 1Description

The SIRUI VA-5 Ultra-Compact Video Head uses a fluid system to produce smooth pans and tilts for DSLRs and compact video cameras weighing up to 6.6 lb. It features independent pan and tilt locks and uses an internal spring-assisted counterbalance mechanism for smoother tilt movements with heavier cameras. A TY-70A quick-release plate comes included, for forward/backward adjustment possible when attached to the head to help balance your camera. A dual safety lock system prevents the plate and your camera from falling off the head when the primary locking mechanism is loosened. To release the plate, simply press the secondary release button. To assist in horizontal alignment of your shots, the head has two bubble levels: one on the base of the head to align the tripod and one on the top of the head to align the camera. One pan handle comes included.

    Sirui VA-5 reviews

    VA-5 Ultra-Compact Video Head is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outperforms larger video heads This thing is buttery smooth in the pan, tilt, and any weird pan AND tilt (e.g., diagonal) motion. It outperforms the Benro S4 which is like double the size. The tilt is particularly good because there are no sticky points typically encountered at the beginning/end of tilts. Adhere to the suggested load of about 6 lbs and all should be fine. It works incredibly well on a travel tripod, but don't extend the center column for best results. The craftsmanship is stellar can tell it's a quality item just by holding it with your eyes closed. Highly recommended. (I've been using this with a GH5 paired with Panny/Canon+Metabones lenses)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great small head. Well constructed I really like this head except for one design flaw. I use this with the Sirui 204s monopod. It works well but the pan lock lever, when fully open, catches on the head support plate. Unlike the QR lever, It cannot be repositioned. If it stuck out another 2 or 3mm there would be no issue. Good thing the monopod itself has a decent pan, although not much drag. You would think they would have realized this flaw, since they obviously compliment each other. I plan to file down the plate if a replacement cannot be found. Overall, the head has solid construction and a tight drag for what I found makes smoother tilt/pan. Not great couterbalance with light cameras, but this is designed for light tripod or monopod use, so you really shouldn't need much, if any.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Perfect Except For One Thing I just bought a Sirui P-224S video monopod (10 stars, btw) and it needed a new head. I already have 5 Manfrotto fluid heads but they're either too heavy, too big and you can't get at the zoom or focus rings, or they lack any kind of camera balance. Most say Bogen on them, and certainly weren't designed for DSLRs. This Sirui looked like a great choice except the fluid action is no where near as nice as the Manfrottos. The panning is somewhat OK, but the tilt is awful. Sirui's idea for increasing drag is to crank harder on the lock knob; it doesn't work that way. From their instructions I suspect they don't really understand what fluid motion is all about. Other than that, the rest of the head is the nicest piece of equipment I own, and I'll find a use for it somewhere. Until I can find something with good camera balance, my 700RC2 is a much better head.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good for its size Very well made. Smooth tilts. OK pans. Counterbalance is pretty weak for anything other than a bare camera and lens. The major selling point will be the size, as I can't think of another head this small with similar craftsmanship. Difficult to adapt to other QR systems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for DSLR Cameras Purchased this fluid head to use with a Sony DSC-RX10 camera for both video work and still photography. It is exactly what is needed. The size is perfect (use it with a Manfrotto tripod and a Sirui monopod) for this type of camera (not so bulky). It is very well made and simple to use. The panning and tilt mechanisms are accurate and smooth. This is a wonderful product and I recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a very solid and easy video head to use I use the product with a spotting scope as well as a DSLR, the action is very smooth

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Smooth operation, but awkward location for plate clamp lever The video head is nice and smooth, just like when I tried in the store. Overall, it is easy to use. The only problem I find is that the lever for clamping the arca-swiss plate to the head is right next to the adjustable pan-tilt arm, so it gets in the way. You pull the clamp lever out and rotate it to re-grab the clamp for more adjustment, but it is a little cumbersome. If it was on the opposite side of the head, then there would be no problem and no need to pull the handle out for large adjustments.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not worthed for video My company has this head which I tried to my Oben and compared with a Libec one that the whole tripod costs around $200 bucks - it's really hard to keep the same speed when panning with this Sirui.
