Axis Communications P1427-LE overview

  • 1Description

The P1427-LE 5MP Outdoor Bullet Camera from AXIS Communications uses a 1/3.2" progressive-scan CMOS sensor for 2592 x 1944 resolution at 12 fps, and it features a 2.8-9.8mm varifocal lens for a 27° to 92° horizontal field of view. Built-in IR LEDs provide up to 50' of night vision, and a removable IR cut filter automatically switches between color and B&W for clear details in low lighting. Wide dynamic range offers high-quality images in ambient lighting, and brightness, sharpness, white balance, and backlight compensation features allow you to configure your camera based on different environments. The camera also comes with built-in analytics, such as motion detection, autotracking, and line crossing. When any of these events occur, the camera will send you an email notification or store video recordings of the event to your edge storage.

The camera compresses footage using H.264 and MJPEG formatting, maximizing your bandwidth and storage. Additionally, video can be streamed in multiple individual streams, and frame rates and bandwidth are controllable for further customizing your network. A microSD slot supports on-site recording, however, the camera can also record remotely to a dedicated NAS. The network is secured with a number of safety features, including password protection, IP address filtering, and HTTPs encryption. ONVIF-compliance provides compatibility with a wide range of surveillance devices for connecting your camera to an NVR or NAS. PoE technology allows you to transfer both data and power over the same Ethernet cable, minimizing the amount of cables needed during installation, and the camera is IP66- and NEMA 4X-rated weatherproof for use outdoors.

    Axis Communications P1427-LE reviews

P1427-LE 5MP Outdoor Bullet Camera is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible cameras Have used Axis cams in the past, always with success. Great products, the best engineered network cameras I've worked with. Installation was a breeze, single Cat5 wire fed from a Linksys gigabit PoE switch. Set up with QNAP NAS for recording. The 1080p image was perfect, elected not to go to 5MP image for storage reasons. Night time imaging with the infrared LED's blew my mind. The cameras adjust the distance of LED illumination based off the zoom of the camera, another really nice touch. Speaking of zoom, the zoom and focus of the cameras is set through the browser UI, allowing you to simply point the camera where you want it, and adjust zoom and focus later. Absolutely awesome, top notch product. Had one hurdle setting up the Axis Camera Companion software, and was given incredible attention by Axis Support staff. I'll never buy another brand of network camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great video quality, highly configurable, 1 qualm but 5 star I got this unit to replace an outdoor Y-Cam Bullet 720 that only lasted about 18 months before going belly up. So far, the Axis has outperformed in just about every category you would measure, albeit at twice the cost. I definitely got what I paid for. The only feature missing that would have been nice is audio (microphone) input which the Y-Cam had.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a Smooth Installation The first thing you should know about Axis Communications security cameras is that they require a Windows computer to install the software. I am a Mac user so I had to borrow a PC for the first part of the installation. Axis claims that you can install their cameras using a Mac and a software program called Bonjour but that did not work for me. The second thing you should know is that even though it is advertised to be a POE camera the Axis T8120 Power over Ethernet Midspan is required to power the unit. My camera is mounted outdoors on a 20-foot pole approximately 300 feet from a source of power. I initially assumed that my POE switch would have sufficient power to operate the camera. However, to be safe, I ran power to the pole. I also had to mount a watertight enclosure on the pole to protect the T8120 Midspan. The third thing you should know is that most Sandisk memory cards do not work with this camera. Customer support told me that only the Sandisk Ultra memory cards do not work but I could not get the Sandisk SDXC card to work either. The fourth thing you should know is that you will need to run management software to view video over your cell phone. I elected to use the Axis Camera Companion because it is billed as being easy to install and manage. Unfortunately, this software needs to be updated/replaced. It consistently failed to find my camera. Customer support was useless. They told me to stop updating the firmware, which is an automatic process when you run the software. I asked how I could disable this function but they never responded. Eventually, after repeated attempts, the software finally found the camera and the system worked - partially. The final thing you should know is that customer support is useless, especially if you are running a Mac. The camera memory cards were not recognized. That is when I found out that the Sandisk Ultra was not supported. So I bought a Sandisk Extreme but it was not recognized. Next I bought a Sandisk SDHC and that did not work either. I spent more than three weeks typing messages and waiting for a response from customer support. I live on the west coast and my customer support rep was on the east coast. That meant he signed-off at 2 pm PST. There was a time when he went radio silent for five days. He asked me to use terminal commands to reinstall the firmware. Unfortunately, the script he sent to me did not work on a Mac and he had no idea how to format the commands for a Mac. Fortunately, I am fairly technical and I modified the script so that it successfully reinstalled the firmware; but it did not fix the problem. The bottom line is that I had to send the camera back for repair and I had to pay for the shipping. After 2 weeks I received a refurbished replacement camera. They said that their policy is to send refurbished cameras if the product is more than 30 days old. Obviously, this was not my fault since it took several weeks of troubleshooting and 2 weeks for shipping. Next, I found that the Sandisk Extreme was still not recognized. So I tried a Sandisk SDHC, which was finally recognized. However, that was not the end of my problems. Even though the SDHC card was recognized I could not display any of the recordings. None of the browsers I tried including IE, Safari, Opera, Firefox, or Chrome would display the recordings. Again, I was typing emails and waiting for customer support to respond. They were almost useless. After several days of trouble shooting I finally realized that my browsers needed a H.264 (MPEG-4) decoder to view the videos. I installed Quicktime on Safari and Firefox and I was finally able to see the recordings. Despite these problems I am satisfied with the daytime video from the 5 MB camera. At night the LEDs are not that bright and I occasionally see ghost images. Nevertheless, I am planning to add 2 more Axis cameras. But the buyer should be aware that this might not be a smooth installation.
