Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Overview

A long-reaching telephoto zoom characterized by a sophisticated optical design and advanced image stabilization technologies, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens is part of the esteemed L-series developed for full-frame EOS DSLRs. Positioned as a versatile option for sports and wildlife photographers, this lens' list of attributes make it a viable telephoto zoom for a variety of shooting applications.

Housed within a weather-resistant barrel, this lens also features fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements for protection against fingerprints and smudges from affecting image quality. Zoom control is complemented by a dedicated tension ring for adjusting zoom torque. Additionally, other refined design elements include a tripod collar that can be attached or detached with the lens mounted to the camera and an included lens hood that permits easy control over specialty filters with the hood in place.

Telephoto zoom is compatible with full-frame EF-mount DSLRs, as well as APS-C-format models where it provides a 160-640mm equivalent focal length range.
One fluorite element and one Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element help to correct chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Additionally, three dedicated image stabilization modes are available—Standard, Panning, and During Exposure Only—and can be selectively employed to suit a variety of types of shooting.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
The rotation-type zoom ring offers precise adjustment between zoom positions, especially when shooting handheld, and a zoom torque adjustment ring enables easy setting of the zoom tension for personalized control.
A weather-resistant design protects the lens from dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
A redeveloped tripod collar can be attached or detached from the lens without having to remove the lens from the camera.
The included ET-83D lens hood incorporates a side window for easier adjustment of rotating filters with the hood in place.

Bought it over 4 months ago and used it for daughter's volleyball and basketball games. Bought it with Canon EOS 90D. Despite my lack of talent we have ended up with many great photos.

I first got the 70-200 f/2.8 ... but I turned that in for the 100-400 which is so much better. I needed the extra length that the 400mmm give me the 200mm is just not long enough. This lens is sharp, and much lighter than the Tamron 150-600 I own. This lens will get used a lot ... easy to use, and I thought I needed the 2.8 this lens at 4.5 is just fine for depth of field shots.

Still One of The Best Telephoto Lens to date.

The Canon EF 100 - 400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens, is still performing to date as when it was first launch on the market. This lens remains tick tack sharp and continue to focus very fast. The Canon EF 100 - 400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens is here to stay.

I haven't had a lot of time to use this lens yet but the photos I have taken a wonderful! I took a photo of a Golden eagle and was amazed at the clear, sharp detail.

Best in class!

Prior to buying this lens I had used the Tamron 150-600 G2. It worked ok, but this lens is in a whole different league. Where the Tamron was inaccurate and slowish to focus, generally soft, with jumpy IS, and prone to wicked CA, this lens is none of those things. Even strapped to an 80D with a 1.4X TC, it still produces very sharp images and snaps to focus so long as you're relatively close to begin with. It's very close minimum focusing distance makes it excellent for shooting larger insects like butterflies and dragonflies. Nothing else touches it for the price. I truly love what this lens lets me capture.

I have used this lens twice, once for a high school football game and once for a 14u travel baseball game, I was very impressed with clarity, I typically use my 70 x 200 2.8 that I absolutely love especially in low light but the 100 x 400 is amazing as long as you have available light.

I bought this intentionally for an airshow and it's quickly become one of my primary lenses. Never leave home without it.

question

how well does this work with a T6s?
Asked by: stephen m.
Good glass on any of the compatible bodies makes a great difference in the image. The Mk II is sharper compared to the ole 100-400mm dust pump though I have taken 1000s of image with that lens. Your next step is to graduate to a 5D MK III with that lens.

what is lens magnification at different shooting distances?
Asked by: Vitaly
I asked about lens magnification at different focusing distances, not only at the the minimum focusing distance, i.e. 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x minimal focusing distance. My calculations showed that at 3.7 meters, magnification of the 100-400mm lens at 400m will be the same as Canon 500 mm f4.0 primes lens at its minimal focusing distance of 3.7 meters (0.15x). 500 mm f4.0 should have been designed with 0.2x magnification at 3.7 meters. Canon 600 mm f4.0 was designed professionally with 0.15x magnification at its minimal focusing distance. 500 mm lens is an engineering mishap, as it should have 0.2x magnification at 3.7 meters (it is likely when measured accurately, it will have 0.14x mag, not 0.15x mag @3.7 meters)

If anyone has purchased this lens recently, has Canon changed from wrapping the fabric lens case in plastic to not doing so? I know they used to but maybe they don't anymore. Just want to make sure mine is ok and not opened or returned. Thanks!

Unfortunately, Im not finding an ETA in our system from Canon at this time for their new 100-400mm lens. If you haven't already, you could choose the Notify When in Stock option on the lenss page on our website. We would then send you an email when it came into stock.
