Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Overview

Positioned as a versatile option for sports and wildlife photographers, this lens' list of attributes make it a viable telephoto zoom for a variety of shooting applications.

Housed within a weather-resistant barrel, this lens also features fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements for protection against fingerprints and smudges from affecting image quality. Zoom control is complemented by a dedicated tension ring for adjusting zoom torque. Additionally, other refined design elements include a tripod collar that can be attached or detached with the lens mounted to the camera and an included lens hood that permits easy control over specialty filters with the hood in place.

Telephoto zoom is compatible with full-frame EF-mount DSLRs, as well as APS-C-format models where it provides a 160-640mm equivalent focal length range.
One fluorite element and one Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element help to correct chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Additionally, three dedicated image stabilization modes are available—Standard, Panning, and During Exposure Only—and can be selectively employed to suit a variety of types of shooting.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
The rotation-type zoom ring offers precise adjustment between zoom positions, especially when shooting handheld, and a zoom torque adjustment ring enables easy setting of the zoom tension for personalized control.
A weather-resistant design protects the lens from dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
A redeveloped tripod collar can be attached or detached from the lens without having to remove the lens from the camera.
The included ET-83D lens hood incorporates a side window for easier adjustment of rotating filters with the hood in place.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Reviews

Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6

I have used this lens twice, once for a high school football game and once for a 14u travel baseball game, I was very impressed with clarity, I typically use my 70 x 200 2.8 that I absolutely love especially in low light but the 100 x 400 is amazing as long as you have available light.

Great Lens

I can't praise this lens enough. Very sharp, fast focusing, accurate focusing, reliable focusing, stays locked on moving subjects, and not overly heavy. Wish I would have bought it sooner. B&H has made the purchase a warm and freindly process. Never any worries when I buy from B&H.

Birds in Flight tool +more! (EF100-400 M2)

Recently in 2022 bought a new 7Dm2 and a EF100-400 M2 from B&H. B&H is by far the most ethical store I have ever dealt with. It is a shear pleasure to work with B&H. I have used the original EF 100-400mm for many years which is realy good in its own right. I actually miss the super speed of the old push pull design for BIF. This M2 lens is so sharp, and focuses so fast on my 7D2, I can highly recomend this EF100-400 M2. This combo is it. Ones skill, will be the only hurdle to award winning photos. Thanks again to B&H for being well stocked as usual, by haveing new stock of the 7D2 and the EF100-400ii ready for same day shipping in 2022.

Big Lens

I have just recently received this lens so have had little chance to try it out so far. The construction seems very good. Of course with a lens this size, it is fairly heavy, although that is not unexpected.

Thought it would be a little slow but performed well enough even under stage lightings at my son's graduation Baccalaureate ceremony held in an auditorium. Love it!

This was a replacement for my older EF 100-400. I prefer this ring zoom compared to the older style slide zoom.

This is our first telephoto

We take beach, sunset, landscape and wildlife photographs. We were interested in a better zoom lens than the 18-135mm we had already and were prepared to enter the telephoto world. This lens is easy to operate, connects quickly to our Canon EOS 90D. It's light enough for both of us (my fiancee is a quite a bit smaller than I am and she has no trouble). While I would like a lower F stop, I haven't seen any real problems with the photos.

Asked by: stephen m.
The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens is fully compatible for use with the Canon EOS Digital Rebel T6s DSLR camera. As the T6s has a 1.6x APS-C cropped sensor, the lens' full frame equivalent focal length would be 160-640mm.

If anyone has purchased this lens recently, has Canon changed from wrapping the fabric lens case in plastic to not doing so? I know they used to but maybe they don't anymore. Just want to make sure mine is ok and not opened or returned. Thanks!

Unfortunately, Im not finding an ETA in our system from Canon at this time for their new 100-400mm lens. If you haven't already, you could choose the Notify When in Stock option on the lenss page on our website. We would then send you an email when it came into stock.
