    Sonnet USB3-2PMA-E34 Reviews

2-Port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 PCI ExpressCard/34 Adapter is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from works as advertised I've just started using this ExpressCard and it works as expected in my 17 Macbook Pro. The Mac driver is pre-installed (must download a Windows driver). It does come with its own power cord that attaches to one of the available USB 2 ports. In order to get maximum efficiency, you must boot up your computer after installing the ExpressCard. The driver installs an icon in the menu which is needed for powering off the driver before ejecting the ExpressCard. It requires a few steps to use, not simple plug-and-play. Other than the inconvenience, it does exactly what I'd hoped--allows me to shoot tethered with my USB 3 camera and run other USB peripherals.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works fine on MacBook Pro (2008) This is the solution to editing in the field using an external USB3 hard drive such as my LaCie Rugged. What's great about it for the Mac is NO DRIVERS! My MBP runs on Yosemite, which has built in drivers to make this a true plug-and-play express card. What's not so great about it is giving up one of the two built-in USB ports on the MBP. Here's the deal: The Express Card port on the MBP does not provide power to any kind of card plugged in. Sonnet gets around this with a power connection to one of the USB ports on the MBP. This enables their SuperSpeed USB ExpressCard to power my LaCie hard drive! I edit video using the Adobe CC suite, and having really fast USB 3.0 read/write speeds makes this card essential.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great Can't complain about being able to find a needed item for an older MacBook Pro. I can't give a speed confirmation other than to say, it's definitely faster than USB 2.0 for sure. All my other ones are Cal Digit (eSata) but I couldn't find theirs for sale anymore, so I gave this one a go.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does Not Work at all Installed in a Lenovo W520 with Windows Pro 7. Device manager reports it installed OK with correct drivers and is working but neither of the USB ports work. The power cable for the adapter connect to a USB port is also woefully short. Installation instructions supplied by manufacturer and their website does not match the driver installation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rock solid so far. I use it for broadcast video editing. Only problem is that the manufacturer (Sonnet) isn't printed on the thing, so when I went hunting around for a driver for Yosemite, i had to check through my emails from B&H to see who made the thing!

    question

I've been reading not-so-good review about this. I have an Early 2011 MBP 17-inch with no USB 3 ports. I'm trying to get a an Express card that can give me effectively 2 additional USB ports for 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch HDD to transfer or read faster than my USB 2 and Firewire 800 ports. Any good words on this or another recommendation?
    Asked by: Christopher L. M.
When using this card on a Mac download the drivers from Sonnets website. They have been updated since the release of the card. Once the new drivers are installed, it is a very reliable card.

    question

Please look over some of the reviews from Amazon's site. These fried drives and other complaints are numerous and quite disturbing. Thoughts?
    Asked by: Christopher L. M.
This is a new model USB3-2PMA-E34, do not confuse with discontinued model USB3-2PM-E34. All those problems Christopher L. M described here were indeed issues of older model usb3-2PM-e34 adapter card

    question

Is it true that this cannot handle 2.5 inch USB 3.0 bus powered drives? On top of that, can one or both of these USB 3.0 ports work or do I need some external power adaptor to work properly?
    Asked by: Christopher L. M.
Most of these types of adapters have an optional AC Adapter that goes with the unit. In the case of this adapter, it can provide power equal to that with 1 USB port, but the adapter ends in 2 USB 3.0 ports, each of which requires power to function if non-powered devices are connected to it--twice the power provided by the port is required by the adapter. The answer is, to be fully functional, you must supply power to the adapter. You can buy AC Adapters that plug into mains and that you can plug into it a USB connector that supplies via a cord, plug-in power to your adapter. If your computer senses it's not getting enough power, it'll shut down that connection and await for you to fix the problem and reset it.
