JVC GY-HM220 overview

  • 1Description

The JVC GY-HM200U 4KCAM Compact Handheld Streaming Camcorder provides 4K Ultra HD recording and professional features in a versatile, handheld form factor. It features a 1/2.33" backside-illuminated sensor that supports Ultra HD (3840x2160) resolution video at 24/30p, and 8-bit 4:2:2 Full HD 1080p video from 24p to 60p. The camcorder is equipped with a 12x zoom lens that provides a 35mm equivalent focal range of 29.5 to 354mm, with a 24x dynamic zoom mode available when recording HD video. Designed to fit into professional workflows, the camcorder comes complete with dual XLR audio inputs, 3G-SDI and HDMI outputs, and JVC's dual codec Advanced Streaming Technology.

When equipped with an optional Wi-Fi or 4G LTE modem, the GY-HM200U becomes a streaming camcorder that allows you to deliver a live video feed in the field directly from the camcorder. Through its dual codec support, the camcorder can stream live HD video to hardware decoders, Ustream, Wowza streaming engines, and ProHD Broadcaster servers powered by Zixi, while simultaneously recording video internally to SDHC/SDXC media cards. A variety of streaming protocols, including RTMP, allows delivery to popular streaming websites and content delivery networks (CDN). Zixi's Advanced Streaming Technology (AST) provides content-aware error correction and bandwidth shaping, while JVC's Streamconfidence delivers real-time feedback of LTE and streaming status in the viewfinder.

For composing and monitoring video, the camcorder features a 3.5" LCD and a 0.24" viewfinder, both with a smart focus assist function. Additional features found on the camcorder include built-in ND filters, built-in stereo microphone, wired remote control support, and nine assignable function buttons. A top handle unit, which includes the XLR audio box, comes included, along with a 7.4 VDC 4900mAh battery and AC adapter.

Note: External microphone not included.

4K Ultra HD Recording at 150Mbps
The camcorder records up to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160) video at 24/30p to UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) memory cards at 150Mbps. Recordings are made using the Quicktime (.MOv) file format and are compatible with many popular editing systems.
Live 4K HDMI Ouput
Connect a 4K Ultra HD monitor with a single HDMI cable and view the camera's live 4K signal. You can also playback recorded files directly from the camera. Additionally, the camcorder downconverts UHD signals to standard HD for output through the built-in SDI or HDMI connectors.
4:2:2 Full HD Recording at 50Mbps
The camcorder records broadcast-quality 4:2:2 Full HD 1080p signals up to 60p at 50Mbps, making it an ideal camera for general HD production work. 50Mbps files are stored in the Quicktime (.MOV) format for easy editing. Conventional AVCHD (4:2:0) recording is also possible, providing wide editing compatibility in an array of standard HD and SD formats.
Web Friendly Proxy Recording
Lower resolution H.264 files (480x270p and 960x540p) may be recorded simultaneously with Full HD files. These files are significantly smaller than HD files, making them more suitable for immediate posting to the web. A file recorded in the 960x540 mode is approximately 1/10th the size of a Full HD file recorded at 35Mbps, and therefore takes a fraction of the time to post. The smaller files may be quickly imported to an iPad for easy editing using iMovie or Pinnacle Studio.
Advanced Streaming Technology
When equipped with an optional Wi-Fi or 4G LTE high-speed broadband modem, the camcorder can deliver a live video stream directly to USTREAM and YouTube, while simultaneously recording HD video internally to SDHC/SDXC memory cards. Transmission at selected resolutions and bitrates is possible independent of the recording mode. The GY-HM200 offers a range of streaming options from basic point-to-point to cloud streaming with advanced error correction.

    JVC GY-HM220 reviews

GY-HM200 4KCAM Compact Handheld Streaming Camcorder is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Camera for broadcasting Live directly from Camera! I've been using this camcorder for the latest 4 months continuously at many venues to broadcast live on my youtube channel. It has worked pretty much flawlessly and it has never let me down! Previously I used to have to connect my old camcorder via HDMI to a laptop. It used to take me about 15 minutes to setup and about 7 minutes packing up. Now it only takes me about 2 minutes to setup and less than that to pack up. It has freed me from being stuck connected to my laptop. Im free to move around and get the perfect angle when needed. *4 minutes if I need to connect to a new WIFI SSID. There are some other pluses ,but the above by far is the most important for those who broadcast live via the internet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific Video Camera!!! I've had my JVC GY-HM2004K now for 30 days and I have to brag, the video quality is stunning. I shoot for national networks as well as local affiliates and work side by side with the $40K cameras. I couldn't find any difference in the quality of the their video vs. mine. I truly believe the new 4K is the next generation of Ultra High-Definition cameras. Don't let the size of this camera fool you, it's comes with all the 'Bells and Whistles' It's small but extremely affordable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Camera.......but This does what is advertised on the box. However, there are a couple of irritating things about it. These are: 1. Flip out screen seems very fragile, has to be treated with real care 2. Audio level controls very small and difficult to operate, especially if you need to tweak while filming 3. The user assignable buttons are v small and difficult to access while filming 4. Manual is difficult to understand and has to be read several times to understand the point that is being made. 5. No battery charger with the camera 6. Nowhere to position a lav pack on the camera

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I will start this post by saying I'm still getting used to this camera...This was my replacement for my P2 workflow and other outdated gear. I only had a few chances to shoot with it. One day in bright burning daylight and the dark of night...The camera is very easy to use and the Auto function works as expected. The manual mode was a bit trickier to handle compared to my old Panasonic gear...this cam has digital zooms and iris controls and take a bit of getting used too. The auto focus is a but slow but again I have not tweak this to perfection yet...The battery runs for at least 3 hours! not bad...The picture quality in day was brilliant! The images in the dark were not as good as my SONY AX-33(a camera half the price) but I was in auto and I had the cam for less than 24 hours at the time...Still decent...When the cam had a little bit of light in a dark setting it performed well...The audio options are great..I like the auto audio as well...great place to start.Great new broadcast style cam for run and gun work! The price you can't beat for the amount of pro features included. Yes you should own one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality 4K at an affordable price I've been waiting for something affordable to make the jump to 4K. This seems to be it. I have shot with many different cameras. Prior to this purchase was shooting mainly with the Canon 70D DSLR. Was really waiting for a good and affordable 4K from Canon, but their latest release wasn't the right camera for me. I'm happy with the video quality. The camera itself has many high-end features that I haven't had on other cameras. I really like the knob for iris adjustment, as well as the built-in audio compressor. Would like a touch-screen focus, but the auto-focus is pretty good and the focus assist makes manual focus very doable. Very much like the 2 rings that can be customized for focus, zoom, etc. Previously I had been coupling my DSLR with a ZOOM H6. This is so much easier, with very good audio quality. Even though I usually produce at 1080p max, having the extra 4K room to reframe has been wonderful. Low-light capability is quite good, provided you are not using the full-auto mode. That settings seems to always be less-than-stellar on any camera. Batteries are pretty good. Not as long lasting as my Canon XA10 (could shoot all day with that), but it's a bigger camera with more processing power. 2 batteries has proven to be more than plenty for any shoot so far. I know these 4K files are small compared to other cameras, but they are still HUGE. However, they have run fine on my system without upgrading. I was totally expecting to have to create proxy files to edit, but that hasn't been the case. Stills are hardly the quality of a good DSLR, but for video are not bad - and you can pull any frame. Makes for creating a nice thumbnail for posting. I haven't had any luck getting it to stream with YouTube. I can get my crummy webcam to work just fine, but can't seem to get YouTube to recognize the JVC camera feed despite using the BH recommended connection options. I'm going to keep working on this, but am frustrated that it is proving to be so complicated. Overall, very happy with the purchase.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very grainy for a 4K camcorder I read up extensively and watched several YouTube videos before buying this camera but as soon as I received it I knew I had made a mistake. The picture is very grainy in low light and there are just way too many buttons. In some cases less is simply more. I went into B&H and played with the camcorders they had on display and I decided right then and there to invest the little extra and go for the Sony PXW-70 - much beer under low light and much lighter - just doesn't come with a boom mic which sucks but other than that I'm having fun shooting with it. JVC needs to step it up!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Worth It. I have seen that this camera has received a bad rap and now I understand why. I purchased this camera for self-stand-up reports and ENG. I read review and though I might as well give it a try. Saying it's bad in low light is an understatement. I used it in decently light situations and still had noise.
