    Synology DS1515+ reviews

DiskStation DS1515+ 5-Bay NAS Server is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 43.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for what I need This is the second Synology Disk Station that I have acquired. I would not have gone back if I didn't like it. I use this for home storage, so not in a work environment. I love how easy it is to set up, and how easy it is to replace disks when needed. The software that controls the disk station is great, and makes managing this very easy. But as this holds quite a bit of data, definitely spend and extra $ and get a backup power supply. You can tell the software to gracefully shut down in case of power outage. Otherwise, you could end up losing data. As all the disks combine to form one volume, the whole thing could be shot in an emergency.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great NAS. Polished Software. We've been running a ReadyNAS X6 for about 10 years now and we've outgrown it with way too many videos of the kids we don't have the time to look at. But that's my problem not yours. Decided to pick up the 1515+ to kill a few birds in one fell swoop. VPN server, Plex server, time machine server and automatically sync all of it to Amazon Cloud Drive. All of it was fairly straightforward to configure and is operating flawlessly. I have link aggregation across the 4 gig-e ports which I can't come close to saturating in my home setup. It simultaneously handles multiple plex clients and backup operations with ease. Will be looking for more things to do with it. Very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent upgrade from Drobo FS! My old NAS had slowed down less than a crawl with my upgrades to an iMac and storing a large amount of NEF raw files. This unit installed with very little effort and is lightning fast. I literally had to wait 2 to 5 minutes in the past for a file of over 150 raw images to display on my screen. Now it takes 2 to 5 seconds. I do have to say that in general the Drobo unit takes less computer savvy and has better documentation but that is far surpassed by the quality and speed of this Synology 1515+. What really upsets me about Drobo is that once you are out of warranty you have to pay $99 just to get telephone tech support. I think that is outrageous. I hope the same will not happen in the future with Synology.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Home Run NAS for Photography Synology just introduced the DS1515+ as an update to its top-notch DS1513+. Adding faster processing and more memory along with much higher expansion capability (30TB versus 20TB on the older model) made the purchase a no-brainer for me. As a pro photographer, I use the NAS as my on-site archive, and it allows me to easily bridge and share files between my iMac and my Windows PC. Synology's hybrid RAID reduces effective storage much less than running traditional RAID while still maintaining fault tolerance for the loss of as many as two of the five drives. (My effective storage is a bit north of 14TB, running a total of 20 TB in the NAS.) Additionally you can synch to an off-site cloud service easily to provide the 'third copy' that's needed for good archiving practices. Set up of the NAS is very easy. Slide your drives of choice into the slots (I used 4TB HGST drives), turn it on, install the software on your PC and go. The NAS runs quietly in a spot on my desk behind my iMac. Response time is fast, and once my files are submitted for publication, I point the Lightroom catalog to the version that's on the Synology NAS, for potential re-edits. Synology has an excellent ecosystem of applications and functions that really expand the usability of the NAS. It's one of the most attractive features of their system. Several people working in the storage industry (I'm an IT pro too) pointed me to Synology in fact for these reasons and the excellent reputation of their products. If you don't require this much onsite storage, be sure to take a look at the other Synology products. These are great NAS devices and you won't go wrong purchasing one. It is a big financial commitment, but in the long run it's worth it to preserve your images and documents safely. I know that if the house is burning, this drive is one of the things I grab. After the kids of course. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Setup This is my first NAS Server and I found the hardware set up and software installation on a MAC to be relatively easy. It will still take some time to get familiar with all the wonderful features of this unit, but the excellent software, website, and easy to follow video tutorials make it very understandable. Prior to the Synology DS1515+ I used a Drobo S. Drobo was one of the worst purchases I've ever made...glitchy product, poor software, poor documentation and absolutely the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Synology is a sharp contrast and I am absolutely enjoying the experience. I am also happy that this unit is quiet enough to sit on a counter just a few feet away from me without being a distraction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, Easy Set Up We purchased the DS1515+ NAS as a data repository and a camera security system for our office. The NAS came in one carton and the 5 drives in another carton. We had the NAS up and running in less than 30 minutes. Although the drives came with mounting hardware (screws), it was not needed, as the drives simply snapped into the NAS provided slides. No tools needed. The DSM OS software may be dauntning for some, but if you have any experience setting up computers, you will have no problem setting up the OS. The NAS has been running for one week, and it has sucessfully performed our nightly computer backups as well as video recording. We are very pleased with the NAS.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A really great machine. I use it as a dedicated backup drive for my Mac. I run only AFP services and it is just for my Mac, home network. It was purchased for the following reasons: * 5-bay storage for massive data and redundancy (RAID 5) * Reported to be quiet * Extremely flexible and user-friendly interface. Well, I shot myself in the foot, being tired and in a rush. SO, no reflection on Synology on that score. Users should read the manual (they have an excellent forum, help pages, and such); slow down on new things; and look at dialogs that say, Do you really want to do that? I say this because some people will blame a product for being so powerful that it allows them to shoot themselves in the foot. To say it is quiet is an understatement. If you put it on a bookshelf next to your work desk, you might hear the fans. The ticking of the drives might get your attention; so, I have it in a book shelf facing away from my desk. I'm very particular about noise. I love this unit. With 5-6TB WD drives in it, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product We use it for backups and for IP video camera recording. There is supposed to be a 5 license pack for the video licenses but in two years since I've been using their product it's ALWAYS only been available in single license pack though they'll ship the individual licenses in boxes of 5. That part is very irritating. It provides a good NFS mount sharing, SSH (for quicker file management operations if you know you're way around Linux command line), rsync. Lots of advanced feature not found in other similar products. It readily supports expansion.
