  • 1Description

The 1TB Aura Solid-State Drive and Envoy Upgrade Kit from OWC / Other World Computing is an upgrade kit for the Late 2013 Mac Pro that lets you increase the size of the internal SSD and use the old drive as an external unit. The kit includes a 1TB Aura SSD featuring the same PCIe 2.0 interface as the Mac Pro and four Sandforce SF2281 controllers with 7% over provisioning. The SSD offers up to 730 MB/s read and 698 MB/s write speed.

The kit also includes an envoy Pro SSD enclosure, allowing you to easily repurpose the factory-installed Mac Pro SSD as an aluminum USB 3.0 external drive for optimal portability. Data can be transferred to and from the enclosure quickly and efficiently with support for data transfer rates up to 500 MB/s over a micro-B USB 3.0 port. The enclosure has an rMBP design with an aluminum finish and comes with non-skid rubber feet. It also provides silent, fanless operation.

Innovative and Dependable
It is an SSD upgrade solution engineered specifically for the Mac Pro and has controller technologies, which deliver time-tested longevity and degradation free performance.
No Hacks
The SSD does not require any software hacks for optimal operation on a Mac and is compatible with all versions of OS X, including Yosemite.

OWC / Other World Computing OWCSSDA13MP1.0K reviews

1TB Aura Solid-State Drive and Envoy Upgrade Kit (Late 2013 Mac Pro) is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unit DOA Unit showed 240GB capacity instead of 1TB. RMA'd to OWC. The external housing was nicer than I expected, but overall, disappointing because of the DOA issue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from T1TB Aura SSD Saves Mac Pro 2013 from Return Bin. First, Apple Mac Pro's from 2013 should have been shipped with 1TB SSD's period. If it weren't for the Aura SSD/Envoy kit, my Mac Pro would be headed back to Apple. I don't know what engineer or marketer at Apple determined that 16GB RAM and 250GB SSD was enough digital runway for its WorkStation Class 2013 Mac Pro but that configuration and my non-video workload failed to perform. After 5 months of back and forth with Apple and only getting 32GB RAM to offset the 16, Apple refused to offer me more storage on what I viewed as a complete failure to live up to advertised characteristics. If you bought one of these you know that the 16GB runs out causing it to use Swap Memory that just isn't there and ultimately the machine chokes itself. Not only this but most Applications want to use the StartUp disk. And if you own a 128GB iPhone+, where do you think you're going to back it up? While this configuration might have been ok if you already owned a Thunderbolt speed external hard disk, you take an immediate performance hit without the on board storage. The idea that we spent $$on a desktop computer that absolutely requires two major components of hardware to be replaced is criminal IMO. The reality is, B&H's offering of the Aura/Envoy was the only path I could, in good conscience buy that was NOT giving Apple the benefit of another dime on this purchase for their lackluster product offering. Plugging the Aura in was a quick process and setup was a breeze. The other benefit thanks to OWC was the Envoy kit that allowed me to at least utilize that 250GB SSD. Unfortunately, the Envoy kit isn't Thunderbolt but USB 3 so I don't get great transfers but better than nothing and I can also use it to connect to my external NAS. I cannot say more how disappointed I am in the AppleCare people who just stopped returning my calls and the complete lack of responsibility taken by Apple other than to offer to allow me to exchange my config for one with the options I needed at my cost for the difference. No thanks. B&H has provided me with terrific choices in photographic equipment and came through with a QNAP with WD hard drives as well as this OWC product. They move at the speed of my small business needs.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Failed Twice This hard drive has failed on me twice. First time was within 30 days so exchanged at B&H. The 2nd time happened after a few months. Luckily, I always have everything backed up. OWC was slow to recognize the problem but sent me a new one after a lengthy back and forth. Let's see how long this 3rd one lasts. Just a bummer that there are very few options for SSD upgrades so i'm pretty stuck with this.
