Raya SDR-400 overview

  • 1Description

The Raya Alpha Digital 400Ws 2-Monolight Kit was put together by B&H to provide a core setup for photographers doing portraits, groups, and fashion who wish to choose their own light modifiers. The kit is built around two 400Ws flash heads that recycle to full power in 2.2 seconds, each with reflectors, flash tubes, and an 8' air-cushioned light stand. A special feature of the Alpha head is the built-in, 4-channel wireless receiver that allows you to forgo hardwiring, instead using the included transmitter to trigger the flashes from up to 82' away.

The 4-section LS-8A light stand rises to a height of 8' and folds down to 27" for packing. The stand can support 7.5 lb at full extension, which makes the 4.2 lb Alpha a great match with an optional softbox or umbrella mounted to it.

Lastly, the soft, padded Impact Light Kit Bag #3 is included to transport and protect the lights and stands. Two overlapping carrying handles and the included shoulder strap provide transport options.

  • 2 x Raya SDR-400 Alpha Monolight

With 400Ws of power backed with solid control and convenience features such as wireless triggering, the SDR-400 Alpha Monolight from Raya is a wise choice for studio and location photographers alike.

The SDR-400's power is variable from 1/32 to full in 1/10 stop increments over a 6-stop range. The 150W modeling light can be set to proportional to visually match the selected power level for easy pre-visualization of your photo. The modeling light can be turned off completely or set to Independent to input any user-selected light level. The lamp can also be set to dim upon triggering and power up when the flash head is fully recycled.

Recycling time is a fast 0.2 - 2.2 sec @ 120 VAC and faster at 220-240 VAC with an action-stopping flash duration of 1/1000 sec and a color temperature of 5,600K that varies only +/- 100K regardless of power settings. The SDR-400 has multiple triggering options including a traditional sync cord and an optical slave but it also has a built-in radio receiver that can be triggered at distances up to 82' by the included 4-Channel transmitter. Settings include sync delay, red-eye reduction and synchronous triggering.

Other features include fan-cooling using auto temperature control to lengthen the life of the flash tube and modeling lamp and protect the unit's electronics, as well as fused circuit protection. The rubberized high strength polymer housing has a S-type mount to take advantage of the wide range if accessories made available by Raya, Impact and other brands that use this mount. The SDR-400 comes with a 7" umbrella/grid reflector, power cord, sync cord, protective cap, 115V modeling lamp and user-replaceable flash tube. Swap the modeling lamp out for a 220V type when used overseas.

    Precision Light Adjustments
The SDR-400 monolight's flashtube has a 6-stop power range, represented by a 10-60 numbered scale on the LED screen. You can subtly increase the power of the light in 0.1 increments with a push of a button
    Wireless Triggering
The SDR-400 has an integrated 4-channel wireless receiver. Using the included transmitter, you can wirelessly trigger your flash unit from up to 82' away. Line-of-sight positioning is not required for your monolight to communicate with the transmitter
Proportional and Independent Modeling Lamp Control
This flash unit has a 150W, 2-mode, user-replaceable modeling light. Proportional mode keeps the bulb's power output proportional to the flashtube's power level. Independent mode allows you to set your own custom modeling light output level
Built-In IR Slave and Pre-Flash Modes
The Raya SDR-400 Alpha Monolight has five slave settings, ranging from an optical slave mode to modes that will trigger the unit with external flashes with up to three pre-flashes. Select your desired mode with the clearly marked digital control panel
    Soft Start Circuitry (SSC)
The built-in Soft Start Circuitry (SSC) ensures longer modeling lamp life. When the modeling lamp is turned on, it will light up at the minimum brightness and gradually climb to the full power output
    User-Replaceable Bulbs and Fuses
Both the flashtube and modeling light of the SDR-400 are user-replaceable. Additionally, the fuse compartment is removable for easy fuse replacement
    Sleek, Durable, and Easily Transported
Built with high-quality rubberized polymer, the durable SDR-400 is lightweight and compact, making it easy to transport. A protective cap is provided for the flash tube and modeling lamp

Raya SDR-400 reviews

Alpha Digital 400Ws 2-Monolight Kit is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Updated Review After an initial issue with one of the strobes, Raya were extremely supportive and quickly acted to help resolve any issues I was experiencing. Absolutely fantastic support. Thank You Raya. Both strobes are functioning flawlessly. They're easy to use, very robust and work well together with the wireless remote. These are very nice strobes indeed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Dissapointed I use this product for portraits in my home studio. The strobes do not hold their charge very well. Following the user manual instructions (30 minutes warm up and several triggers to charge the capacitors), the strobes may flash once, then maybe three or four triggers before they flash again. Sometimes, there is also a delay in the flash firing (probably the wireless connection) a couple of seconds after the camera (no delay functions activated on the flash). In summary (for the strobes), I miss more shots than good shots. The rest of the kit is ok and good value for the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good! So far these lights have been great. They arent profoto, but they are doing the job. For the price point I have been very happy with them. Great adjustability and plenty of settings to suit the shoot. The stands they come with are a bit on the light side, but again for the price point they are great. The built in electronic trigger is super handy and works without problem. I was shooting a group photo and another shooter was using on camera flash and I was able to turn the cell off and they didnt interfere with my strobes. On thing Im not sure about is the mount point for the umbrellas is kind of awkward. The set screw is small and set back so it may make for limited adjustment of the distance of the umbrella from the light. Again though for the money Im very happy. Oh and the bag is good, a little narrow , but I can fit the whole kit plus 2 extension cords and 4 umbrellas ( and a roll of gaffers tape).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent lights Pretty good value overall. These replace a similarly priced kit (5 year old Sunpak) where one light bit the dust, I loved the Sunpaks until it failed and you can't get them fixed or take them apart readily. For studio work there are good features. The buttons are easy to figure out - don't need to look at the manual if you are not a newbie. The radio remote works surprisingly well so don't need long PC cord or extraneous third party remote. The stand is a bit tight onto the lights mount and needs some gentle shoving - hopefully it will get easier. The charge up after full discharge is less than 2 seconds with mine, which is excellent. Can shoot almost continuously when going down to 1/4 power or less. Not super pro gear but will definitely bring in enough light with good control - With digital, it's almost too easy not to get good results. If you are someone who does need to travel to events with lights, these might work well as economical emergency backups when the tried and true ones fail. Sure, I miss my Speedotrons and should have held on to them - 25 years old and going strong. This came with a monstrous kit bag from Impact and 2 adequate stands. The AC power cords have a cheap feel to them and not a sure grip when plugging in. I don't plan to travel with this and hope to get some years use out of it. Never can tell these days how long what will last at any price paid. For start up studio, portraits, products of just still work these should suffice to learn the ropes of lighting or keep a budget minded studio in the black.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again I have not had a lot of time to use the lights but initially I am pleased with the build of the product
