Tiffen aXent overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 58mm XLE Series aXent Neutral Density 3.0 Filter is a solid ND filter with a 1000x filter factor that provides a 10-stop exposure reduction. Its 3.0 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

3.0 neutral density filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 10-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

    Tiffen aXent reviews

58mm XLE Series aXent Neutral Density 3.0 Filter is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slow Shutter in Bright Light ND filters are confusing. This 3.0 filter changes the exposure by an equivalent 10 stops. In other words, you can get blurred motion at high noon on a sunny day. On a mirroless camera you can set the ISO low, select aperture priority, set a small F-stop and the camera will figure out a slow shutter speed and the viewfinder remains bright for composition. Tiffen does not get credit for the highest optics. I don't know why. However, considering the purpose, I'm not going to use this filter a lot. Nor can I actually see any negative effects of being an inexpensive filter. I would buy it again and would suggest it to friends.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good I finally got around to testing this filter out. I purchased it for slow daytime shutter speeds to show cloud movement. Only being 18 bucks I thought it would feel cheap, but it seems to be built with quality in mind. It screws on to my lens with ease and with the rings I have i can mount this to other lenses with different thread size easily. I did some test shots to see how long of an exposure I can get during daylight using ISO100 and F22. Although 40 seconds is getting overexposed, it is easily fixable in Camera RAW (I shoot RAW). Color is a tad off but again, easily fixable in post and there seems to be a slight vignette.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Haven't really tested it yet I just received this filter, i probably shouldn't be giving a review just yet. But i got this filter for slow shutter daylight shots (especially for cloud movement) unfortunately there were no clouds, but i wanted to test how slow I could shoot. I set my camera at ISO 100, at F-22 with bulb setting for shutter speed at 1 minute 30 seconds. Color seems to be ok, but at 1:30 it appears that is the limit on a sunny day. Once I get some clouds and test, I will give more info. I do have cheaper 4x filters that I can add on, but then color starts to change. It does seem a like a durable quality filter for the price though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for long exposure! I recently bought this filter for long exposure and I must say it does do a nice job, the quality for the filter feel very durable and the image is quite pleasing. For anyone asking yes it does have a little green tent but not so much you can't use the image especially if you have post-editing software.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy!! Of course I went searching for a filter to take long exposures in the day time but I hadn't really anticipated that I would need to use it at night... Well I did! For the first time last night. I used it at the outdoor mall the grove in Los Angeles; the setting was at night with lights everywhere, too bright for long exposure really. So I popped this baby on and got some amazing shots. A note though, I'm glad I made the customer service rep go through all the filters cause he was telling me I would only be able to use an $ one but I remember seeing this on the website and it has worked out great for me!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy this filter An inexpensive 3.0 ND filter......That's the only redeeming thing about this filter.....I will be returning it......Spend the money and get a better ND filter.....The Color cast on this filter is unbelievable.........Orangey red.......

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for solar photography, but has one flaw... I really like the solid construction of this filter. I was able to take some great shots of the sun, so it does its job, certainly (Processed photo of two different exposures attached). I do have one complaint and it is why I can't give it five stars: My lens cap does not fit over it, making things much more difficult. If I want to put the lens or camera away, I must first remove the filter. this is inconvenient, and I can see it leading to a greater possibility of me dropping it or in some other way damaging it or my lens / camera. It's a simple thing, but important none the less.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect 10 stop ND filter During the first week I used this for several long shutter speed time exposures and could not be happier with the results. If you are looking for ND filters, this, IMO, is the way to go. Less than $ bucks for a 10 stop...can't beat it!
