FUJIFILM XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR Overview

A flexible workhorse of a lens, the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR from FUJIFILM is a versatile standard zoom spanning a 24-84mm equivalent, wide-angle to portrait-length range. Characterized by its bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture, this lens is adept in difficult lighting conditions and also offers notable control over depth of field. Its optical design comprises both aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements, which help to reduce distortion and color fringing for improved sharpness and color accuracy throughout the zoom range. Nano-GI and HT-EBC coatings have also been applied to elements to minimize surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting.

Complementing the optical attributes is a Twin Linear Motor autofocus system, which offers impressively quick, quiet, and precise focusing that benefits both stills and video applications. Additionally, the lens has a fully weather-sealed design to support its use in trying environmental conditions.

Standard zoom is designed for APS-C-format Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras and offers a 24-84mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and excels when working in difficult lighting conditions.
Three extra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce high clarity and color fidelity throughout the zoom range.
Three aspherical elements control distortion and spherical aberrations, which helps to improve sharpness and realize more accurate rendering.
Nano-GI (Gradient Index) coating has been applied to lens elements and alters the refractive index between the glass and air in order to better suppress lens flare and ghosting for diagonal incident light.
An HT-EBC (High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating) coating has been applied to the entire surface of each element for controlling ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color accuracy.
A Twin Linear Motor autofocus system delivers smooth, near-silent performance that is especially beneficial to video applications and when working in noise-sensitive areas.
The lens body incorporates extensive weather sealing to protect against dust and moisture, and to enable worry-free use in inclement conditions and freezing temperatures as low as 14°F.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contribute to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.

FUJIFILM XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR Reviews

A Very Sharp Zoom Lens

So far I haven't had a chance to use this lens much, but the few times that I shot with it I'm impressed by its sharpness. It does well with lower outdoor light, but its f2.8 aperture isn't really wide enough for lowlight indoors. It's a heavy lens, but I like the solid feel of it and I really like it's constant f2.8. I'm looking forward to using this lens for outdoor events, landscapes, and street shooting. I think that I'm going to get some great images with this one and can't wait for a little nicer weather.

My Favorite Lens

Okay, I just switched from Nikon to Fujifilm after thieves boosted my car and hit the Nikon jackpot. So needless to say, I am just getting started, but I guess I can say this is my favorite, even if its my only lens. However, It does cover my present focal wheelhouse and I appreciate the weight difference from my Nikon rig. The build quality is great, and lens is water resistant, which is a big plus for me. I can't really think of any major negatives, but I'm not a tech head. How about I just say, it takes great pictures as a substitute for techno wizardry? The bottom line is my personal standard is, would I purchase again? The answer to that is a resounding yes!

My 3rd lens for my new XT4 had to be the XF 16-55

I had rented this lens a couple of years ago to test out Fuji X series cameras and lenses as I was switching from Canon DSLR to mirrorless systems. I loved the XPro3 I rented and this lens! I felt so confident in it after a few days of use, I shot an entire Christening with it and the XF 50-140 (that's on the list to add too) The lens is tack sharp and unbelievable resolution and color. It has rounded out my essential 3 starter lens and so glad I went for it right away. I am covered now with a great range of focal lengths along with my XT4.

Good Results, Needs some additional features

I've done three shoots with the lens since receiving it this past week. One music video, one interview and one portrait shoot. I used it on an X-T4. Right out of the box, it has a very nice feel to it. The difference in grip materials on the zoom ring and focus ring is a nice touch that makes it very clear what you're about to turn when you're looking through the viewfinder. The aperture ring has a rather soft click to it, which is not my preference. My Fujifilm 35mm 1.4 and X100F have a more substantial feel that confirm your movements with a tactile response that this lens just doesn't match. The lens hood is fine, but the mounting system doesn't inspire me with confidence that I'm not miss threading it during installation. Like most of my lenses, this doesn't mount to the body easily unless my aperture ring was set to A (auto) prior to mounting. For the uninitiated, as you rotate the lens into place on the body, you'll often end up only rotating the Aperture ring until it stops and then the rest of the lens will rotate before locking in place. I wish there were more distance between the flange and the aperture ring, but I wish that about all of my Fuji lenses. Optically, I'm enjoying this lens a lot. I'm really happy with how sharp it is wide open, and it looks optically perfect at f/4 and 40mm in my portraits. This is my first zoom lens on Fuji's system, and I've noticed some things that could be improved on the camera's optical correction. Mostly, it's just slow. You can really see the corrections taking effect if you make a quick adjustment from 23mm to 55mm for example. It's honestly close to nauseating if you're looking through the viewfinder. I'm used to DSLR cameras and looking through mirrors where this effect doesn't exist. Just another trade off of moving to a mirrorless system I suppose. What I would like to see changed in future iterations is an internal zoom function like Canon's 24-70mm. Earlier today I was framing up a shot at 55mm with a jewelry stand in the foreground to create some sparkling bokeh, but I kept bumping into it because the lens is so long at that focal length. It would also improve the look of the lens and make it useable in a matte box with filters. To wrap it up, it's a solid lens optically, but not my favorite functionally. And to me that's a disappointment since it is designed to be a function forward lens. Will it stay in my camera bag? Absolutely, at least until there's a new an improved version. For now, I'm making do.

Really sharp images and really crispy videos. Very sturdy and well made. Looking forward to creating a lot of material with this 16-55mm and my XT3.

Best All Around Fuji X Mount Lens

I have owned this lens for a couple years now and felt I needed to leave a review because this lens really is awesome. I own several x mount lenses and 9/10 times I grab this one. It covers almost any need you may have with the exception of maybe long zoom wildlife photography. Otherwise, this lens will tackle most of your landscape, portrait, street photography needs. Very sharp, very quick. Some people have complained about the size but when paired with the battery grip it feels very balanced. If you are on the fence just do it. You will not regret it. I just got back from a 4 day hunting trip and here are a few photos from the trip for reference. They were shot raw but kept it simple for good reference.

question

Are the aspheric lenses made of plastic?
Asked by: Anonymous
Aspheric refers to the physical shape of at least one of the lens elements. It is a non-spherical surface meant to enhance optical performance by reducing aberrations. From Google: Aspherical lenses are lenses with complex curved surfaces, such as where the radius of curvature changes according to distance from the optical axis. Spherical lenses are subject to aberration and therefore cannot concentrate all the light into one point

Is there a tripod mount ring available for this lens? - The lens is quite heavy for mounting on a Fuji camera and then the camera on a tripod with the camera base taking all that weight pressure, which would eventually crack the plastic camera base.

Unfortunately, no, Fujifilm does not manufacture a tripod mount ring designed for use with the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR Lens.

I have never noticed that issue. I have used this lens and other Fuji primes and the exposure was consistent if the same ISO, aperture, and shutter was used.
