FUJIFILM XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR Overview

By B&H Photo's
A Flexible Workhorse of a Lens
The XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR from FUJIFILM is a versatile standard zoom lens designed for APS-C-format FUJIFILM X-Mount mirrorless cameras and offers a 24-84mm equivalent, wide-angle to portrait-length range. Characterized by its bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture, this lens is adept in difficult lighting conditions and offers notable control over depth of field.
Optical Design
Its optical design comprises both aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements, which help to reduce distortion and color fringing for improved sharpness and color accuracy throughout the zoom range. Nano-GI and HT-EBC coatings have also been applied to elements to minimize surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting.
  • Three extra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce high clarity and color fidelity throughout the zoom range.
  • Three aspherical elements control distortion and spherical aberrations, which helps to improve sharpness and realize more accurate rendering.
  • Nano-GI (Gradient Index) coating has been applied to lens elements and alters the refractive index between the glass and air in order to better suppress lens flare and ghosting for diagonal incident light.
Quiet Autofocus
  • A Twin Linear Motor autofocus system delivers smooth, near-silent performance that is especially beneficial to video applications and when working in noise-sensitive areas.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contribute to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
Weather-Resistant Design
  • The lens body incorporates extensive weather sealing to protect against dust and moisture, and to enable worry-free use in inclement conditions and freezing temperatures as low as 14°F.

Probably the best zoom range, and it's cheaper than Sony lens.

Super crispy.

Lens feels great, quality is stellar but it's heavy, probably feels better on an XT-4, I have an XT-3 and it's definitely heavy for the body. But the quality of images with this lens is amazing.

Zero complaints.

Terribly Disappointing

I have used Canon, Sony, Fuji, Leica, and Schneider lenses, among others. I have never returned a lens, or complained about one before. I just use them. This lens is completely different. It is simply terrible. When used at the wide end of the range, it creates tremendous distortion, with people's bodies looking distorted and bloated. Same for architectural elements. What is particularly disturbing is that this not a kit lens. The lens profiles do not correct these problems. I am able to reduce the problem in Photoshop, but I shouldn't have to do that. Very surprising because the Fuji medium format lenses are excellent. It is so bad, that I plan to write Fuji about the quality.

Great Zoom Lens

Happy with purchase, great event, daily carry, street lens for my use. Def. Not a light lens, but makes your day lighter overall by not carry extra lens. Great for lens for food shoots stepped down, very sharp lens! Even wide open. Works well with all 3 of my Fuji bodies!

question

Are the aspheric lenses made of plastic?
Asked by: Anonymous
Aspheric refers to the physical shape of at least one of the lens elements. It is a non-spherical surface meant to enhance optical performance by reducing aberrations. From Google: Aspherical lenses are lenses with complex curved surfaces, such as where the radius of curvature changes according to distance from the optical axis. Spherical lenses are subject to aberration and therefore cannot concentrate all the light into one point

Is there a tripod mount ring available for this lens? - The lens is quite heavy for mounting on a Fuji camera and then the camera on a tripod with the camera base taking all that weight pressure, which would eventually crack the plastic camera base.
Asked by: Allen
Unfortunately, no, Fujifilm does not manufacture a tripod mount ring designed for use with the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR Lens.

I noticed this lens is about 1/3rd stop darker than my primes when both are set to the same f stop. Wondering if this is normal or just my copy?
Asked by: Alex
I have never noticed that issue. I have used this lens and other Fuji primes and the exposure was consistent if the same ISO, aperture, and shutter was used.

Asked by: Nate
FUJIFILM XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR Lens holds up very well on the new 40 megapixel sensors of the XT5 and the XH2. Image is very sharp all the way to the corners of the frame.
