Panasonic AW-HE40 Overview

The white Panasonic AW-HE40HW PTZ Camera with HDMI Output features a 1/2.3" MOS sensor. When connected to the Internet, this IP camera allows you to control PTZ actions and monitor the surveillance area from a remote location via a Web browser. This provides you with several advantages like reduced integration costs, easy remote production and engineering, and lower cost for multiple location systems.

Equipped with a 4.3 to 129mm zoom lens (35mm equivalent is 31.6 to 962mm) with 30x optical zoom and 16x digital zoom, and a 1.4x digital extender, this PTZ camera enables you to zoom in on activity in the monitoring area for a closer look. The Dynamic Range Stretch (DRS) minimizes blocked shadows and blown highlights. When it gets too dark to record normal footage, this Full HD PTZ camera uses Night Mode to capture clear images in monochrome. The camera supports audio input, allowing you to capture and embed audio within the video signal. It is PoE+ compatible, allowing you to power the unit using only a single LAN cable.

Highly accurate pan-tilt head offers precise, fast, and fluid movement in all directions, enabling the capture of both slow- and fast-moving objects without excessive vibration and bounce
Freeze During Preset function may be enabled to freeze the video during preset playback. The immediately preceding still image is output during preset movements, so that the swiveling movement is not displayed.
Dynamic Range Stretch (DRS) for minimizing over exposure in highlights and detail blocking in dark areas. The AW-HE40HW is equipped with High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode. When shooting and synthesizing two images with differing exposure times, the AW-HE40HW can create video with high visibility that corrects for halation and black defects, even under backlit conditions
Hybrid 2D/3D Digital Noise Reduction (Hybrid DNR) allows clear image capture with minimum after images, even in dimly lit areas
Switching to Night Mode makes shooting possible, even in low-light conditions. The AW-HE40HW can also be set to switch to the mode automatically, depending on surrounding light levels.
The AW-HE40HW also supports audio input, embedding and encoding. The input from the camera's switchable mic/line input can be combined with the HD-SDI, HDMI, and streaming outputs for mixing, recording or transmission.
Pan/tilt speed adjustment from 2 to 4 steps
  • Preset memory up to 100 positions.

  • Equipped with RS-232C remote terminal (standard serial communication support). Up to seven units can be controlled via daisy chain connection.

Panasonic AW-HE40 Reviews

Useless in low light

By Daniel

If you are planing to use this on a theater or recital hall, think twice...and don't get it. Yes, the PTZ is great (hence the 2 stars) but the image is, at best, garbage for any low-light situation. In the defense of the camera, I inherited them as part of a previous install so the mistake is on the so called AV integrator that has no idea what we do. This camera would probably be fine for church services with lots to light and happening during daytime hours.

Poor low-light performance, smooth motion

This camera has excellent PTZ control that is very smooth. Smooth enough to be able to do on-air moves from the controller even when zoomed in quite a bit. Unfortunately, the camera requires a lot of light and if you don't have excessive lighting then you are going to be cranking the gain. While the noise reduction is good, there was still a significant amount of noise when running the gain at 24db, which is where we needed to be even with dedicated video lighting in a small room.

We own three of a previous generation of Panasonic PTZ camera and they have worked great for ten years. The PTZ functionality and smoothness of the Panasonic products is impressive. I purchased the AW-HE40 to replace one of the older units and was excited to have POE functionality...which was good as it doesn't come with an a/c adapter. Unfortunately when there is motion from the camera or the subject on camera (walking, moving your hands, turning your head) the picture quality suffers drastically. Have to return and look for something else.

Solid device for our needs

This is the second AW-HE40 that our church has bought. We purchased the first one over 2 years ago. The camera works very well. The zoom and low-light performance is great. We use it with a network connection that provides POE. There is about a .25 second delay in the video over the network. I'm not sure if the delay is the same when using a HDMI connection. The interface API to control the device is pretty simple. I wrote an application to remotely control the camera using a X-box controller.

Fantastic Picture quality

The HE40SW was our choice over the HDMI version for a number of reasons. firstly, We use CAT6 (POE) and an SDI cable and that's it. This means I don't need to run separate power. 2 Cables and the cameras are up and running. SDI also gives us much longer cable runs than HDMI and using the BlackMagic Television Studio 4k means we have no converters.

Has anyone used this camera connected to a Tricaster Mini? Can the Pan Tilt and Zoom be controlled by the IP connector? Thank you!
Asked by: silvio
Yes, you can do so with an Tricaster Mini. Access up to 4 live Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) robotic cameras via standard serial and network protocols, with native preset system and user interface control over camera orientation, zoom, focus and iris.

any red light issues? not flashing red light, just solid red light..?
Asked by: TERRELL B.
Regarding redlight issues, Panasonic says: Pilot light blinking red check points:- This product is compatible with IEEE802.3at PoE+ (plus) powering standard, and it has no compatibility with IEEE802.3af, previous PoE standard. Check if your TCP/IP hub device supports PoE+ standard (Not IEEE802.3af).- Check if LAN cables satisfiy Category5e or higher. Category5 or lower ones can cause power supply failure.- Check if power consumption amount of the equipment powered from the hub device is not beyond the maximum permissible level of the device.
