Audeze EL-8 overview

  • 1Description

The open-back version of the Audeze EL-8 Planar Magnetic Headphones are designed for reference level personal Hi-Fi listening when connected to a low-powered external headphone amplifier or portable device. The headphones are sensitive enough to be driven by portable music players such as iPods, iPhones, and other smartphones. They feature the company's patent-pending single-sided Fluxor magnets to reduce weight while still achieving a magnetic flux density comparable to the LCD series of headphones to deliver a frequency response of 10 to 50,000 Hz into a 30-ohm load.

Instead of utilizing traditional dynamic cone drivers, the headphones implement a neodymium planar magnetic transducer design. Planar magnetic technology differs from traditional dynamic cone designs by suspending a thin lightweight diaphragm within a parallel magnetic plane comprised of an array of magnets. The diaphragm is much lighter when compared to a traditional dynamic cone and has a printed circuit spread across a thin-film substrate on the surface of the diaphragm as opposed to a cone attached to a voice coil. When the audio signal from the amplifier reaches the circuit, it magnetizes the diaphragm within the field and produces sound.

The benefits of a planar magnetic design include faster transient response due to the lighter diaphragm, a wide frequency with low distortion, better heat dissipation, fewer moving parts for greater durability without the kind of sonic degradation that cones are susceptible to, and better amplifier compatibility because the circuit functions as an almost entirely resistive load.

The magnetic structure creates a uniform magnetic field across the diaphragm without the need for additional ferromagnetic material traditionally found in other planar headphones to remove magnetic interference, reduce harmonic distortion, and lower overall weight. The headphones also feature Audeze's patent-pending Fazor elements that guide and manage the flow of sound through the earcups for a more enveloping sound stage and improved frequency extension.

These headphones utilize a patent-pending Uniforce diaphragm that virtually eliminates all the breakup modes that are common in more traditional designs. They come with a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter. The industrial design was provided by BMW DesignWorks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Cans Okay, so for the money, what you get are a great set of headphones, however, if you plan on listening to MP3 files don't spend this much! I recommend headphones in a $200 to $300 dollar range. Also these headphones require a headphone amp to get the fullest listening experience. Since these headphones have an impedance of 30 ohms they require additional power to amplify your tracks. There is some detail in the song that will just bearly be heard. Headphones with 20 ohm impedance require less power from your device and thus your device can produce the power for these headphones to represent a fuller, more detailed sound. There are many great brands such as B&W, which I would recommend that will be powered by you smartphone with no problem. None-the-less these do sound great through the Pono player but do sound even better when I hooked up my Pono and the headphones through a headphone amp. The increadble detail these headphones can produce is amazing and even worth buying a headphone amp if you don't have one, a big investment, but if you enjoy listening to music, and not just hearing it, these headphones (along with a headphone amp) are pretty increadble for this price. I compared them at B&H to the LCD 2 and the only difference I noticed was a slightly better representation of the lower frequency (bass) from the LCD 2. Otherwise the clarity and the sound is equal to those headphones within a $1k - $2k range. I am also waiting for the balanced cable to come in, so I may update this review (if possible).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from QC needs to improve. B&H service is Great! I got mine and open with nice presentation. One side of headphone broke right out of box. Not sure if the signature stand for anything. The headphone dose not work. Call the support from Audeze. The support is nice. But they are slow in response critical issue. They said it is problem with packaging... Wants me to exchange another one. I said if it is the problem with packaging don't they all have the same packaging? B&H took a tight response, return it and get another cans. Stay with the old brand AKG, Sennheiser, or Beyerdynamic
