G-Technology 0G03586 overview

  • 1Description

The lightweight and portable 1TB G-DRIVE ev ATC with Thunderbolt from G-Technology is a rugged, bus powered, all-terrain drive solution with a tethered Thunderbolt cable that helps shield and protect a removable G-DRIVE ev RaW USB hard drive. While properly encased in its enclosure, the drive is well protected against falls up to 6.6' / 2.0m on a carpeted concrete floor. The watertight enclosure will float, and if it happens to become submerged, the watertight compartment will protect the drive in up to 1.0' / 0.3m of water for up to 30 seconds. The watertight compartment will also help to further protect your data from pressure, shock, and dust. The ev All-Terrain Case is compatible with the Evolution Series, which also fits the G-DRIVE ev or G-DRIVE ev SSD.

This drive is well suited for performing various tasks while working in the field, such as backing up, editing, transferring, and general storage, as it is equipped with a 1TB capacity, a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, and data transfer speeds up to 136 MB/s. While the interface on the drive case is Thunderbolt 10 Gb/s, users are also able to remove the drive from the enclosure, at which point they have the option of utilizing the drive's USB 3.0 port or the drive's SATA interface. Those who wish to use the ev RaW's USB 3.0 interface may connect the drive directly to a system with a USB 3.0 port. Additionally, the ev RaW's SATA interface may only be used with the expandable and hot-swappable storage solution G-DOCK ev with Thunderbolt.

While the 1TB G-DRIVE ev ATC with Thunderbolt does come pre-formatted for Mac, it can be easily re-formatted for Windows. When used on a Mac, it is compatible with Mac OS X 10.7+ and also supports Time Machine and plug-and-play setup. When re-formatted and used with Windows, it is compatible with Windows 8.1, 8, and 7. This drive is also compatible with any Evolution Series G-DRIVE ev product. The 1TB G-DRIVE ev ATC with Thunderbolt operates solely using bus power, includes a USB 3.0 cable, and is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0.

1TB G-DRIVE ev ATC with Thunderbolt is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Misunderstandings about Thunderbolt I purchased this drive from elsewhere. There seems to be a misunderstanding about the capabilities of the Thunderbolt interface, as is evident in a review left for this product. Firstly, Thunderbolt speeds are not expressed in GigaBYTES per second; it's GigaBITS. The lowercase 'b' vs uppercase 'B' needs to be noted here. A gigabit per second translates into 0.125 gigaBYTES per second (or 125 MB/s). Therefore, Thunderbolt 1 is capable of a 1125 MB/s maximum transfer speed theoretically. Thunderbolt 2's theoretical max would be double of this (2250 MB/s). Secondly, you have to consider what kind of media are on both ends of the connection. This 1TB ev drive is a conventional hard drive spinning at 7200 rpm with a SATA III connection. The maximum theoretical transfer speed of the SATA III interface is 6 Gb/s (= 0.750 GB/sec = 750 MB/s). First thing to note about this drive is that 6 Gb/s obviously does not fully saturate a 10 Gb/s connection. Therefore, no matter what SATA III drive you put inside this rugged case, you will never saturate the Thunderbolt connection. The ev SSD from G-Tech (or any SATA III SSD for that matter) just wont exceed 530 MB/s write speed at the maximum. Therefore the lesson to be learned here is that any stand alone SATA III drive will never fully saturate a Thunderbolt 1 connection. In fact, it's fairly useless in a sense with this spinning drive. You also need to consider what type of media in your machine it is you're copying to. An SSD copying to an SSD will always be faster than an SSD to HDD (and vice versa) and HDD to HDD. Thunderbolt will never magically increase read and write speeds. I hope this was at least slightly informative. In short, this drive performs as it should, given its SATA III interface and the fact that it is a conventional spinning hard drive.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Some good, some bad So here are the good things about this: it's pretty solid even though the plastic does feel a bit cheap. It's certainly nice to have the Thunderbolt cable tucked away neatly. Very easy to swap the drive out and put in another. Here are the bad things: the replacement drives are far more expensive than other drives on the market. Why go they only offer 500GB, 1TB and 2TB? I'd love to see a 4TB drive for this. The SSD drives are more than twice as much as other Thunderbolt SSD's of the same size. The case doesn't feel like it closes as tight as it should. The latch seems a little cheap. Having the Thunderbolt cable attached can be convenient but it is also a problem. The cable is pretty thin and the first day I had the drive, it ejected by just bumping the cable. Definitely a pain!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for video editing. This is a great drive and it's fairly fast. It's just not the best for video editingespecially not 4K. I was looking for a portable for video editing on the go, and thought this would work. It's a bit sluggish compared to this brands other portabe 1TB drive. I thoughts I'd try this out due to it's ergonomic design. And I like the design, but wish that the thunderbolt cable was replacableit's attached to the case, so when (not if) this cable get's a short, the case is pretty much no good. Otherwise, this is great. I do like that the case has a removable bay that you can swap out drives. However, the drives to fit this case are a little pricey. GIve it a detachable thunderbolt cable and a faster drive and i'd give this thing 5 stars... otherwise, just 3 in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid build quality and super fast location backups. I shoot advertising portraits and lifestyle. On location, tethered from a Canon EOS to an Apple MacBook PRO, using CaptureOne. Photographing people in the style I do means super fast bursts of 30-100 images in just a few minutes. Between takes the digital tech will backup the shots using ChronoSync and the G-Drive ATC is blazing fast at 7200 RPM via Thunderbolt. Love how solid the drive is built. The Thunderbolt cable is built in. For USB 3.0 you need to slide the inner drive out of the case and use your own cable. I almost never use this device with the USB because I have an open Thunderbolt port on the OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock that I use. On many shoots I will be on location for more than one day and I sometimes I get to leave the cameras and computers on location. Single day or multiple day shoot, I always bring a copy of the shoot home with me at night no matter what. This drive enclosure is so well built I never worry about dropping the G-Drive into my backpack and walking away from a shoot with a rock solid backup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Love this HDD!! I am a small time photographer that is able to make time one weekend every month and go somewhere for a few days to practice photography. So I wind up taking my Laptop and a hard drive (an older G Drive EV) with me. I was able to afford this when it was first released, so I bought one thinking, eh, what the heck? Lets add some protection to my photo storage device. I LOVE it! It is a little bulky, but knowing that your data is safe is priceless and far outweighs the bulk factor! It was easy to unbox and setup. The only thing I wish was different was the cover for the Thunderbolt. It is a silicone cap with a silicone band that ties the cap to the cable, I kind of wish it was different. I just fear I will snag the bang on something on tear it. Other than that, it's great! Keep up the good work G-Technology!!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awsome Fast, floats, built in thunder bolt cable..... This thing rocks... If price is ok with you for 1tb. For the the portability and security. It is worth it to me. Just went to a week long kids camp, with sand and water everywhere and will be going to Haiti in a few months, so it fits my needs perfectly. Editing in FCPx directly from drive without issues. Would have given 5 stars if it was 2 tb. I shoot in 4K sometimes and files are huge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Drive As a photography student, this drive has been perfect for me. The 1 TB model holds photos from all of my shoots, with plenty of room. With the case, I am able to safely transport my drive between my classes, my dorm, and my home without worrying about the drive being damaged. It is also one of the fastest drive that I have ever used.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Consistency I actually bought two of these drives. Ordered one from @ when B&H was down for Passover. The @ drive arrive but the Thunderbolt connection failed the work. I returned it and got one from B&H which seems to work OK but no where near the advertised max of 10 GB/sec. Part of the problem may be upload speed from my iMac
