Movcam MM4 Overview

The Movcam MM4 4 x 5.65" Clip-On/15mm LWS Rod-Mounted Matte Box can be used as a clip-on matte box useable with lenses that feature a non-rotating front and a maximum outer diameter of 130mm. If the front of your lens rotates while focusing or zooming, you can use the matte box by mounting it to 15mm rods. It features 2 non-rotating filter stages that accommodate filters up to 4 x 5.65" in size.

The matte box hood is constructed from carbon fiber so it is both lightweight and strong. Two ARRI-compatible rosettes, one on each side of the hood, allow you to connect accessories including handgrips. Incorporating a lockable top flag (eyebrow) hinge that allows you to precisely set the included top flag to cut flare and glare without intruding into the frame, this matte box helps provide protection to your image from stray light.

Clips onto lenses with non-rotating fronts with a front outer diameter up to 130mm.
15mm LWS rod clamps allow you to use the matte box on an optional rod support rig. This is useful when working with lenses that feature a rotating front.
The built-in hinge allows you to mount the included top flag to the matte box. The hinge is lockable for precise control, and the top flag folds in half to save space during storage.

Lightweight and cost effective. Goes well with my Angeneaux Optimo

A good mattebox with some quirks

Its a solidly built piece of gear. It fits (barely) my Arri Rota Pola,  and it is a pretty good mattebox alltogether. What really doesnt work very well is the ring clamp. Its a 130mm clamp that has a weird way of clamping onto the adapter rings you need for different lenses. To be able to insert the mattebox onto the adapter ring (already on the lens) you have to unscrew the clamp all the way to the end of the thread, like ALL THE WAY, and you usually end up with the screw in your hand (and the receiving end then can fall of easily). It should have more thread ... its an easy fix but a huge usability problem

Well made, compact

MM4 is an ideal fit for use with an A7s rigged with other Movcam gear. What it lacks in features, e.g. rotating filters, swing away, it makes up for with compactness and precision.

question

What is the widest focal length lens that can be used with super35mm format? How much does this MB weigh?
Asked by: Brandon K.
Generally speaking, matte boxes will accept 18mm and above in Super35 and 24mm and above in Full Frame. Specific combinations of wider lenses, camera and matte box would have to be tested.

question

I'm using a Sony FS7 with the Zeiss LWZ.3 21-100mm. How can i adjust the mattebox on the rod to make sure it will fit my front lens (114mm). I don't see anything to adjust the heigh of the mattebox?
Asked by: Zakary B.
The MM4 mattebox does not have a height adjustment. With the correct step down ring (130mm to 114mm MOV-301-02-004-108C), the mattebox can clamp directly onto the front of the lens. Using the Movcam FS7 / FS7 II baseplate and riser would allow for cinema standard height alignment if you choose to go a different route for your camera support.
