Apricorn VEL-DUO overview

  • 1Description

The Apricorn Velocity Duo x2 provides two SATA III interfaces for your Windows or Mac desktop computer. It connects to your motherboard via a PCIe 2.0 x2 slot to support up to two optional 2.5" storage drives, which offer extra storage space for your computer. In addition, this card supports SSDs that enable the computer to boot up faster as well as access and save data quicker when compared to standard hard drives. When the drives are software configured for RAID 0, they can transfer data to your system up to 800 MB/s. Included with the card is a downloadable Apricorn EZ Gig Cloning Windows software program with Data Select that copies the contents from one drive to another. This program along with a Marvell 9230 chipset lets you utilize the storage drive connected to the card as a bootable drive.

Simple Installation
Simply snap your storage drive to the Velocity Duo's SATA connectors, secure them with the provided mounting screws, then slide the card into any available PCIe slot (x2 or larger.) Once installed, transfer your OS and applications from your desktop drive to your newer storage drive using Apricorn's EZ Gig cloning software for PC systems, or for the Mac Pro, use Apple's built-in Disk Utility.
SSD Performance
Running your OS and applications on an SSD provides an increase in performance when compared to typical hard drives.
Improve Game Performance
As games become too large for their assets to be fully cached on modern graphics cards and main memory, the addition of two SSDs brings faster disk access during game-play and eliminates in-game pauses for a smoother playing experience. Games are also faster to load and save with two SSDs.
Mac Pro Compatibility
The Velocity Duo x2 will function in Mac Pro models with an available PCI slot, but will only boot in EFI64 machines which are identified as Mac Pro 3.1, 4.1, and 5.1. Mac Pro models that are EFI32 cannot boot directly from the Velocity Duo x2. However, they will recognize the Velocity Duo x2 as a storage device.

Velocity Duo x2 is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works fine, arrived quick. I wanted the board to enable adding some SSDs and a Virtual Windows machine to my Mac Pro, in order to approximate the mass-storage situation on my Surface Pro 3. I'm still mucking about with VMware Fusion, which isn't very user-friendly, and I may switch to Boot Camp, but the board is working fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great, Fast. I'm using this card with a couple of cheap 512gb A-Data SSD's. In a raid it's doing better then 700mb/s read/write, 2009 Mac Pro. 15 second boot on OS 10.12.1. Happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent SSD Raid 0 Controller Card I purchased this card to replace a similar card from a competitor, which was about 16 months old. The competitor's card never performed correctly and the tech support was unable to correct the problems and it required a driver to work. Recently the computer would not find the SSD raid as the startup volume and the only way to get the computer to boot from the SSD raid was to unplug the computer and then hold down the option key at startup which revealed the SSD raid. At any rate after some online reviews I decided to purchase the Apricorn controller card. I am running a mid 2010 Mac Pro six-core and had two 2TB (total of 4TB) Samsung 850 PRO SSD's mounted on the competitor's PCIe card. I moved the two SSD's to the Apricon controller card fully expecting to have to reinitialize the SSD's and to clone a backup drive to the new raid 0 configuration. To my amazement, the machine upon rebooting booted from the Apricorn raid 0 configuration and has performed flawlessly ever since with no need to clone or move files to the SSD raid. The only issue I had was there was an apparent interference on a tab at the rear of the Apricorn board that prevented the board from fully seating in my machine. I had to file down the protruding edge of the board and ended up substituting the metal bayonet adapter from another board onto the Apricorn board. This allowed the board to seat properly in my machine. I am very pleased with the performance and the machine reliably boots with no drivers needed. Booting from a SSD raid is sweet and files open nearly instantly. Overall excellent product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product, excellent performance. I recommend it. I have a Mac Pro 5.1 six core mid 2010 unit. About 18 months ago I purchased a competitor's SSD PCIe card and installed two Samsung 850 2TB SSD's on the card in a raid 0 configuration. The card required a driver and was buggy from the get-go. It would periodically not recognize the Raid SSD drive as a boot drive. More recently in order to find the raid 0 boot drive I had to unplug the computer and then hold down the option key for the raid 0 drive to be found. The manufacturer was not helpful in resolving the issues. After some research I opted for the Apricorn Velocity Duo x2 from B&H to replace the existing card. After receiving the new card, I transferred the two Samsung SSD's to the card. When I went to put the new card into the machine, it would not seat in the PCIe slots. After some experimentation I filed down the corner of the card and also put a different bayonet connector onto the card and then the card seated properly. Upon booting the machine, I was utterly amazed to see the machine recognize the new Apricorn and boot from the Apricorn card's two SSD's configured in the raid 0 configuration with all of my existing files on them. I had expected to need to do re-formatting of the two SSD's and various file transfers. The card does not use any drivers. In the several weeks I have owned it, the machine always recognizes the card and machine performance is rock solid and very fast. Booting from a fast 4TB HGST HD takes about 3.5 minutes to load the system and various files before the machine is usable. Booting from the Apricorn Raid 0 configuration takes about 45 seconds for the machine to be usable. Overall I am very pleased with the purchase. I have purchased from B&H previously and have always been pleased with the pricing and delivery performance and their vast selection of cards such as this. Ron
