Samsung NX500 Overview

  • 1Description

Capture brilliant photographs and video with the exceptionally compact NX500 Mirrorless Digital Camera from Samsung. This camera takes a 28.2-megapixel backside-illuminated APS-C CMOS sensor and pairs it with the DRIMe V Image Signal Processor to creative high resolution images with low noise at sensitivities up to ISO 51200. This combination also enables the recording of 4K video at up to 24 fps or UHD at up to 30 fps with HEVC (H.265) compression for saving space without sacrificing quality. Adding to the unit's versatility is the inclusion of the 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Power Zoom ED OIS zoom lens.

High-speed shooting at up to 9 fps is possible as well and the NX500 uses the NX Autofocus System III with 205 phase-detect points of which 153 are cross-type for fast, accurate focusing. Composing and viewing images and video is greatly benefited by the inclusion of a 3.0" 1036k-dot AMOLED touchscreen monitor on the rear of the camera. Additionally, this screen can be tilted up to 180° for shooting at a wide variety of angles.

Operability of the NX500 is designed to be simple through the use of two separate command dials on the back and front of the camera as well as a Hybrid UI for intuitive usage. Another feature of this model is Samsung Auto Shot which tracks subjects at 240 fps in order to trigger the shutter at the ideal moment, such as when a baseball player makes contact with a pitch. Additionally, it comes with the ED-SEF8A Flash and has built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC and Bluetooth options.

The camera is compatible with Samsung NX-mount lenses and included in this kit is the Samsung 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Power Zoom ED OIS lens. Offering a 24.6-77mm-equivalent focal length range, this versatile wide-to-short telephoto utilizes low dispersion and aspherical elements to reduce aberrations throughout the zoom range. Optical image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake and Electro zoom control realizes smooth zooming performance that is especially beneficial to video recording.

28.2MP BSI APS-C CMOS Sensor & DRIMe V Image Signal Processor
A large 28.2MP BSI APS-C CMOS sensor works with the DRIMe V Image Signal Processor to produce high-resolution digital imagery while maintaining good shadow details and enhancing low-light performance throughout the camera's 100 to 51200 ISO range.
4K, UHD, and Full HD Video Recording
As a 4K-capable camera, the NX500 is among the most compact cameras in its class. Aside from 4K/24p, video can be recorded in Ultra-HD, at 30p, as well as in full HD up to 60p. To help ensure that even the highest resolution video files are easy work with, the NX500 accommodates UHS-I memory cards and employs HEVC (H.265) compression.
NX Autofocus System III
The NX Autofocus System III utilizes 205 phase and 209 contrast-detection autofocus points to acquire focus quickly and precisely. The phase-detection method is ideal for gaining focus in an expedited manner while contrast-detection is employed to fine-tune the focus for critical applications. When combined, focusing is sharp and leads to making photos in a natural and intuitive manner.
High-Speed Performance
Leveraging the powerful processor, the NX500 features continuous shooting rates of up to 9 fps as well as a maximum shutter speed of 1/6000 second. Also, high-speed bursts are possible at up to 30 fps when using lower resolutions.
3.0" 1036k-Dot Tilt-Touchscreen Monitor
Reviewing and composing critical shots is made easier by the 180° tilt capability of the 3.0" 1036k-dot touchscreen AMOLED monitor. This display enables users to shoot at odd angles while still keeping the image in view. Also, the touchscreen functionality allows for fast review or changing of settings.
The NX500 incorporates two separate command dials, one on the front and one on the back, that streamline the changing of shooting settings. This is combined with a Hybrid UI for intuitive control over your camera.
Files saved on a memory card within the NX500 can be downloaded off the camera via its USB 2.0 connection. When wirelessly accessing images stored to the camera is preferred, NFC capability allows individual files to be transferred to a smartphone or tablet with one tap. Large groups of images may be transferred using 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth can be used to easily activate the Wi-Fi while allowing a connected phone to constantly feed accurate GPS data to the camera for tagging to photos and videos in real-time.
Auto Shot Mode
Samsung's Auto Shot mode tracks subjects at 240 fps and triggers the shutter at the ideal moment. The NX500 offers 3 different settings for this mode, Baseball, Group Jump, and Trap Shot, which will allow users to more easily capture action in their images.

    Samsung NX500 Reviews

NX500 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens (Black) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 38.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Possibly the best APSC sensor camera today I'm a working photographer using Nikon and Fuji system for most of my work. I recently purchased NX500 based on few but positive reviews by DxoMark and 2016 Consumer Report about its sensor being better than Sony. I added NX500 with a Samyang 12mm f/2.0 to serve as a dedicated ultra wide angel camera to compliment my Nikon and Fuji. For my last holiday trips I took a Pelican case full of Nikon and Fuji but ended up shooting most of the time with the NX500. Its touch screen and interface is the best I've used. I could just email photos right off the camera. Overall I was very impressed with this camera. It's definitely underrated gem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's A Keeper Received my NX500, body firmware 1.00, today. Superfine jpegs I shot are excellent, equal to the NX1. I do not understand the poor quality jpegs being posted by reviewers. ..For those experiencing soft images try OIS set to mode 1, noise reduction to Low and focus to Single AF. The OLED display is very impressive, set to OLED Color ON.SD card used: Transcend 64GB, SDXC UHS-I Ultimate, 95MB/s read, 85MB/s write.Shot movie at 1920x1080, 24p, played back via HDMI to 1080p plasma. Excellent detail and very good sound. The recording level is adjustable for the built in mic.Shot 4K movie at 4096x2160,24p, played back via HDMI to 1080p plasma, I was surprised to see this actually worked. Since the plasma was only 1080p, tiny improvement in picture quality was observed.I purchased this camera for travel. The sensor has enough pixels to create multi shot enlargements for a wall grouping. Features and flexibility of the NX500 are impressive, can't wait to try the Smart Modes. my pet jpeg, AUTO, superfine, F4.0, 1/50, ISO400, 6480x3648.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best APS-C mirrorless options out there. The sensor is the same as in the NX1 but the video processor is a slightly lower-powered variation (presumably to prevent cannibalizing NX1 sales). The difference is apparent in the 4K functionality: the NX500 records from the center of the sensor which produces an incremental 1.7x crop factor multiplying on top of the existing 1.5x APS-C crop. The NX1 has none of this extra-crop nonsense and downsamples the output of the whole sensor into 4K. Image quality is generally superb, comparable to the very best APS-C sensors available today (e.g. Nikon D7200). Low-light image quality is good with the caveat that the NX autofocusing system can struggle a bit in low light compared to the AF on Sony sensors. Although Samsung NX is perhaps the least popular mirrorless system (besides maybe Pentax Q), I would consider it tied with Fuji for second place and just behind Micro Four Thirds in terms of attractiveness. M43 has the advantage of lens ecosystem and aftermarket support, but Samsung has a nice collection of reasonably-priced first-party lenses that are hard to argue against. As examples the NX 30mm and 85mm primes compare very favorably against the normal MFT primes and Olympus 75mm respectively on both price and performance. The NX lens options are certainly more reasonably priced than Fuji offerings. I would seriously give the NX500 a try if you are after a mirrorless with better low-light performance than micro four-thirds options, along with a reasonably-priced albeit first-party lens ecosystem. If you can deal with the limited buffer in continuous shooting and the lack of viewfinder, the NX500 is a fantastic option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive This is a first impression review and based on the first few shots using the Auto mode and jpeg at the Super fine level. First impression: Wow!! I am a 30+year Nikon shooter and got this camera as a 2015 Father's day present from my son. IQ is incredible (bright sunlit day). A few specs that are unlisted: It shoots still at 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1. The specs show only 3:2 for stills and 16:9 for video. I will come back to this review later, but for now, I am really impressed. Colors are vibrant, and clarity is exceptional for a kit lens (16-50mm OIS). The 1.5x sensor is a good one. My first test of a camera is how well it does on auto in good shooting conditions. The complex menu system is relatively easy to navigate with the touch system. Shooting controls were surprisingly easy to manage. The touch control and control on the lens adds flexibility to shooting in difficult situations. This camera will surprise some folk. I shot one high ISO shot at 12600. Noise was very controlled and not offensive at that setting. Will put it through its paces over the next two/three weeks and see if I need to lower the rating. For now, this little camera, for what it is, gets my 5 stars. The 4K video is attractive but haven't used it yet. I haven't gotten attached to DSLR video yet. And my first 2015 camera product experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like it I am a casual photographer, and I use the NX-500 mostly for outdoor pictures. So far I am impressed with the handling and controls of the camera. The camera feels great in my hands and construction is good. The menu system is very well done. The camera with kit lens is light enough to carry around on my neck. Quality of images is excellent. I've taken a few long exposure shots of the stars at ISO 3200 and so far I've been impressed with the results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new hiking camera I take this camera hiking virtually every day. Was not impressed with the 16-50mm kit lens- the 30mm f2 pancake lens is my mainstay, although the 45mm is used when sharpness to the edge is needed. An EVF would be nice, but I've been able to take pics under all conditions. I shoot aperture preferred, f2.8 to f6.3 at ISO 200 (if possible) and output equals or bests any of my L lenses on my Canon 5D Mk2, unless low light pics are needed. Got rid of my SONY RX100ii after shooting a dozen pics through the NX500 with the 30mm lens. Output not even close. Fantastic little camera if high quality photographs are important to you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Awesome! I'm in love with this camera. The photo quality is outstanding! It shoots fast and the 4K video is outstanding also. I have may different NX lenses that I use with my NX300 and it's great that they will all work with the new NX500. One note: At the time of this review, the video codecs are not available yet for Mac. I hear they are hit or miss with PC. Samsung is using a new h.265 MP4. Until this becomes a native codec, the videos will need converted. Samsung recommended I use a program called WonderShare Video Converter for Mac. This works great, although I am anxious to see future updates, where I will not have to convert before importing into FinalCut. If you would like to see some 4K video examples shot with my NX500, search YouTube for Designs4Times. That's my channel and I will be offering a full video review and currently have samples there now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I just HAD to get it! And I'm happy I did! :D I've got this camera for walk-around, when I don't want to carry anything large and heavy. Since I also have the NX-1, I can use all the same lenses on both! One of the main reasons I just 'HAD TO' get this camera was, because B&H put it out on a pretty big sale for a limited time, then I sold the 16-50mm kit lens back to B&H that saved me even more (since the NX1 came with the 16-50mm S - Pro version and I din't need 2 for the same focal length), which in the end made this camera a real bargain for me that I simply could not resist! :D About the camera itself: THE GOOD: - LCD is bright enough even for day-light. - Very fast auto-focus. - Great images in both JPG and RAW. - 4K (UHD) video is very good. - Same image sensor as on the NX-1! - Multi-Dials, features, menu is well thought out. - Easy to learn, easy to use. - External mini-flash is efficient and good. - LCD flips for Selfies with Auto Face Detection. - Firmware came out fixing some issues and bugs. THE BAD: - No electronic viewfinder. - No built-in flash. (external included) - In 4K Video mode there is an extra Cropping over Cropping! - Low battery performance. A backup is a must! - Little bit loud in photo mode. - 4K Video files, as well as RAW image files MUST be converted (software provided), since at this moment, the are NOT recognized by photo/video editors. Though not perfect, all together the NX500 is a great little portable mirrorless camera with very good image and video quality. The kit lens is surprisingly good, though not as bright, fast and sharp as the 'S' pro version, but at least not as large and heavy as that one is. Zoom function is also built into the kit lens. All together I like this little camera a lot with all of its little buttons, dials, features, menus, quality and performance much more than I thought I would. And I can learn to live with the lack of EVF and adjust to the 4K video crop, as well as carry a backup battery with me (in addition to a portable power station) to make sure I won't run out of juice. So I give it 4 Stars out of Five. :)
