Yamaha P-115 overview

  • 1Description

The black Yamaha P-115 Digital Piano is an 88-note, weighted-action piano that offers useful features for everyone, from beginning players to professionals. The unit is equipped with Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) action, which gives it a similar feel to an acoustic piano.

The piano's PureCF sampled piano sound and internal stereo speakers make it ideal for practicing, especially with the most recent Grand Piano sound. The keyboard offers a Split mode and also an innovative Duo mode. The latter lets two people play simultaneously on the keyboard, with each having his or her own middle C. For ease of use, the voices of the sounds are printed on the panel.

Another innovative aspect of the unit is the Intelligent Acoustic Control feature. It's essentially an adaptive EQ that changes the tonal balance based on the keyboard's volume setting, making sure that the piano sounds as good as possible at any level. A sound boost feature helps further refine your sound, and a speaker off feature makes it easy to mute the keyboard's built-in speakers.

In addition to its built-in speakers with top mounted tweeters, the device features line-level Aux outputs. You can use these to connect to a mixer or other external device without cutting off the speakers. A USB port gives you the ability to interface with a computer. In conjunction with Apple's optional iPad Camera Connection Kit, you can even connect with music apps such as Yamaha's Digital Piano Controller app.

You also get 10 built-in styles for practicing with, including boogie woogie, stride piano, and ballad arpeggios. A built-in rhythms feature gives you 10 drum patterns to play with, offering a great alternative to a standard metronome.

Weighing less than 27 pounds, the piano is a portable solution for keyboardists on the go. It pairs well with the L85 matching stand and LP5A three-pedal unit.

88-note Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) weighted-action keyboard feels like an acoustic piano.
USB and audio connections
192-note polyphony ensures the suppression of dropped notes even with simultaneous Dual & Split modes and a drum pattern playing
Intelligent Acoustic Control provides full, balanced sound that adapts to each user's volume setting for the best possible tone at any level
The internal speakers stay on when an external connection is made via the P115's Aux Out jacks
Duo mode allows for side-by-side piano practice. Ideal for schools teaching group lessons, it accommodates two students per piano, each with their own middle C
10 pianist styles give the user a virtual built-in duet partner that plays along in one of ten different playing varieties, including boogie woogie, stride piano, or ballad arpeggios.

    Yamaha P-115 reviews

P-115 - 88-Key Digital Piano with Graded Hammer Action (Black) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I received this as a gift and at first I wasn't very pleased with the feel or sound. It sounded very flat and too even, like a keyboard - not like a piano. But then I looked through the manual and found that I can change the settings to add more depth to the sound - and it sounds wonderful now! You can change the settings to make the piano touch sensitive (the way a piano should be), to add reverb so it sounds like you're playing in a concert hall. The hammer action works great and makes it have that piano feel instead of a keyboard feel. Now I love it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Speakers are inadequate Making changes to the unit is acknowledged by a positive vs. negative beep. There is no lcd screen or any other visual confirmation of changes. The sound is awful, but I think it's a combination of a digital piano with terrible speakers - they're too low wattage. If the speakers were increased and there were a way to see your changes implemented then this would be a better instrument. You must buy an acoustic piano. The quality and sound simply isn't there for a digital piano. B & H Photo were fantastic about my returned piano purchase from them. I was very pleased with their returns department and customer service.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not much of an upgrade The P-115 is a minor upgrade of the beloved P-105. You can get a P-105 for a hundred bucks less. The P-115 is supposed to have two more voices, but I count fourteen, just like the P-105. It has a few more rhythms and styles, and an optional iPad app. The app gives you some nice extra features; it's faster and easier than futzing with the silly onboard key combos, and you can create and save custom settings. For people like me who don't own an iDevice and never will, this is not a useful feature. There is a limited set of drum rhythms and piano styles. The onboard two-track recorder only holds one session at a time, so when you record something new the old recording is lost. The sound of the onboard speakers is very good, and the keyboard feel is nice and acoustic piano-like. Don't get stressed out over authenticity; if you must have real acoustic piano sound and feel then get an acoustic piano. The P-115 piano voices are quite good, plus it's portable, you can use headphones, and plug it into a mixing console, external amp, or computer for all kinds of additional capabilities. As far as I can see the main reason to prefer the P-115 is to get the iPad app. Me, I think that's a cheapskate way to avoid including an LCD control panel.I enjoy playing the P-115; it feels good and solid, and it sounds great. But IMO it's not worth $ more than the P-105. The Casio Privia PX-150 and -350 offer a lot of bang for the buck, so I may exchange it for one of those. If you live near a music store (which I do not, so I must research and shop online) definitely try them out in person, because ultimately it comes down to personal preference. Buy what pleases you and have fun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing sound and portability The first time I tried this piano I fell in love with it immediately. The sound is amazing. Then I picked it up and noticed how light it was, and that was another plus for me. Then I discovered it has different rhythms built in for me to practice not just a metronome click! When I finally ordered one and stopped going to the store to play it, it arrived with the G# key stuck. I'm not one to call the store, repackage and wait for another one to send this one back. So I turned it upside-down and opened it. The key was not clicked in place all the way. It appeared to me that during the building of it someone didn't click it in all the way, so I snapped it in place and closed it. That's when I discovered it had 2 more speakers on the bottom! I've had it for about 3 weeks now and the action on the keys is so on point that I can't get off it! I have a motif8 and a Yamaha P-120S, one is too light, and the other too heavy, but the keys on this P-115 are just right! Falling right in the middle of the other 2. I love it!
