UDI RC U818A Reviews

Great introduction to drones.

This is a very reasonable way to dip your toe into drone flying. Ironically, the least expensive drones that beginners will gravitate toward are usually among the most difficult to fly because they lack the onboard programming of their more expensive siblings. I have found the UDU818-1 extremely durable so that the learning curve hasn't been too expensive. A word of caution, it is very light weight and therefore not appropriate for windy days. I suspect that after mastering this stepping up to a higher end model will be quite easy!

Great buy for the money

The UDI818 A-1 flies well indoors and outdoors in light wind. I haven't tested the HD camera yet. It's flies responsively but seems to get out of calibration easily if one forgets to follow the proper start up protocol. This isn't a big problem since the calibration procedure is quick and easy.

Good beginner drone with one catch...

This is a good drone for someone who wants to learn to fly and doesn't have any experience doing so. It is fairly rugged, as its plastic airframe is flexible and bends rather than shatters upon impact. It comes with two batteries and two sets of propellers. Flight time is around seven minutes. The batteries can be charged two at a time via the included USB charger/connector and they charge up fairly fast. It has a beginner as well as a sport mode and can even do flips. The carch I mentioned in the title is twofold. The round prop protector airframe can get hung up on tree branches quite easily (speaking from experience here). also, because the motors aren't brushless, they aren't terribly powerful so any wind higher than 4-5 MPH finds the drone struggling to staying aloft. But all in all, it is fun to fly under the right conditions (open field and little to no wind). It has helped my to learn the basics of flight and when I do make a mistake and land too hot it doesn't suffer any damage. For the price I can recommend it without hesitation. (Just purchase a couple of extra batteries...).

Extreme Fun, Very Durable

Great for beginners. Gives you a chance to let how to control a drone yet it can take quite a few crashes. Mine hit some overhead power lines, crashed into a tree then landed in a paved street upside down. I brushed it off and kept flying.

This is a great beginner drone. I bought this for my 12 year old daughter who has very little remote flying experience. Although the manual is confusing, obviously it was originally written in a language other than English so the translation is grammatically a mess , the drone it's self is simple to operate after a bit of practice.

question

What is the difference with the UDI RC U842 ? They seem to have the same features / video / camera.
Asked by: stefano
The major difference is that the Discovery has propeller guards so that when it hits things the drone will bounce off, rather than break its propellers.

question

I have the UDI 818A and just purchased the 818A-1 from B&H. I love the HD video and audio but it appears the pictures are not being taken. Can you provide any technical assistance? Does the SD card need to have the folders in a certain structure? Is there a software bug that is appending the wrong file extension? etc........

question

What does No Autopilot mean ?
Asked by: Anonymous
Autopilot advantage: you can let go and the drone will hover and await further instructions. Disadvantage: more $$$! You have to fly this bird or it will crash, I have a little bit of experience with Bell 47 helicopters and it comes in handy with this quadcopter. I suggest you start carefully inside to learn to fly your 818. Despite this I really liked my 818 until I lost control and if flew into Lake Champlain! I thought the camera did a pretty good job for such a low cost bird. I have considered buying another. All flying models crash and die sooner or later.

question

Flew the drone for 15 minutes and one of the propellers stopped working - now it won't fly at all. Is there a warranty on this and who do I contact to get it rectified?
Asked by: Anonymous
The udi models unfortunately dont have crash packs. But I would recommend getting a Hubsan x4, you can get tons of replacement motors, blades, led lights... and its only about $50.

question

My quadcopter keeps losing connection to the controller and dropping. What can i do?
Asked by: mohammad y.
It is best to check the area you are trying to fly in for interference. You can also try another of the four channels your remote and copter are capable of transmitting on to see if that clears it up. If you have any more questions you may also e-mail [email protected]

Asked by: James S.
No Camera image is not shown on the screen and also sometime the camera does not seem to video or take the snapshot....maybe out of range??? At least this is the case when I have flown the copter!
