Pentax DA 18-50mm f/4.0-5.6 DC WR RE Reviews

The lens that I dreamed of at the price that I can afford

I am excited that at last my WR system is complete. I have been having a K50 and a 50-200 WR lens for quite some time but wasn't able to really go out to shoot in the rain because of the lack of a wide angle. Those others are too expensive I couldn't afford. Along comes this lens good price, WR and can even collapse like a dream come true. It's true the whole thing is plastic and the front elements wobble a little but so were some of those old manual focus lenses. certainly I wouldn't want to imagine what happen if I dropped it. Picture quality is average (don't compare with lenses that cost 10 times more) and the built-in focus motor is bit slow. But overall for $167 I think it's al lot to offer and a great buy, Hopefully it will be trouble-free and productive for years to come.

Good light weight compact travel lens

I took this lens on a trip to Hawaii and came back with a bunch of great pictures. It is very light and seems flimsy, but the results were good. There is more or less softness around the edges depending on the focal length and f stop. The focal length range, light weight, and collapsable configuration make it a good single travel lens. As long as it continues to produce good results I'll continue to use it.

Not quite up to par

I ordered it as a companion to my HD 55-300 WR in preparation for a trip to Alaska. I wanted to like it . . . lightweight, compact, quick and quiet focus, initial impression of IQ after a few test shots was very good. But - the build just seemed flimsy, with lots of wobble in the barrel. I could feel it wiggling around even with just the light pressure needed to adjust a polarizing filter. Nowhere near as solid feeling as the 55-300. Sent it back, bit the bullet and exchanged it for a used 20-40 Limited, which I LOVE - but that's a subject for another review.

Deserves a better lens cap

I use this lens for table-top photography and it is pretty close to ideal for that purpose. Since I have plenty of light, I can stop the lens down to 8.0 or 11.0 with no problem and at those apertures it's sharp and has nice color rendition. It focuses close enough but is not a macro lens. Some reviewers have complained about poor build quality but I think this springs more from the flimsiness of the front cap than anything else. Any pressure at all on the sides of the cap will cause it to deform. Since it fits over the hood, it is a slide on instead of a snap on and removing it is a real pain.

question

What type of lens hood work with this lens?
Asked by: Clemente T. S.
The included lens hood is very small so there's no need to reverse it or ever remove it. If you don't have the original hood, the lens has a 58mm thread so any 58mm lens hood can be attached. However, because it's a zoom if you use a generic hood it will be too long at the wide angle settings and too short at the telephoto settings.
