Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The B+W #960 metal telephoto lens hood is made of black-anodized aluminum with light-absorbing flat black ribs on the inside, and due to it's cylindrical shape this hood is especially suited for telephoto lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great addition to my Canon bino's I purchased a pair of these lens hoods to go on my Canon 10x42 binoculars. I had two things in mind - suppress glare when looking toward bright lights (REMEMBER - DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN!) and preventing dewing when I use the binoculars for extended periods at night. Viewing through the bino's, they do exactly what I wanted. I don't see any vignetting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic, at a premium This is a great hood. I was a little hesitant because I am using it on lenses in the 52-58mm focal range with an APS-C sensor, but seeing no definite evidence it wouldn't work I took the plunge and picked one up. Even with a filter behind it of medium thickness, there is no vignetting on my Nikkor-H f/2 50 52mm lens. As an aside: with the 52mm threaded hood, a pinch-center lens cap can be fitted just inside the lip (which lets some light through the edges), or all the way back inside (which provides total darkness, but is trickier to get in/out).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Work well with Canon 10x42 L IS These work very nicely with the 10x42 binoculars. They shield the front elements from raindrops and cut down on glare. Additionally, they can be unscrewed and slipped over the eyepieces, so that the binoculars still fit in their storage case. Definitely a must if using the binoculars in the rain!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality I use this on my old Nikon 100mm 2.8 Series E. If you happen to be thinking about using this hood on that lens, it looks as if they were made for each other. The build quality is outstanding. It may be a bit pricy but you get what you pay for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from precision thread manufacture apparent. use with gun grease I've ordered this along with several affordable Sensei 52mm hoods. I am satisfied with the Sensie, but am very pleased with the thread precision felt when applying this B+W hood to lens. I've learned to apply gun grease (I use Tetra Gun Grease) to the threads before install, and was amazed at how perfect and silky-smooth it felt. I'm glad I splurged on this one. I'd also like to find a correctly sized plastic cap that would fit over the hood and serve as a protective lens cap.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good But Bulky I bought this hood for my 45mm lens which is actually a 90mm with my camera's crop factor. Fits it fine. There's no vignetting on the corners. In fact, there seems to be 1 - 3 millimeters space between the corners of my frame and this hood. That's good in case I want to add a couple filters between the lens and this hood. It's lightweight and strong. My only complaint is that it doesn't collapse for storage like some of my rubber lens hoods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for telephoto! I use the hood for my 70-210mm telephoto push-pull lens. It is sufficiently long and narrow to block out light and yet shows no vignetting at any focal length. Exactly what I was looking for. Solid metal construction makes it a great safety feature for the lens. Very lightweight; made from a high quality aluminum. Looks great! The only downside I have found is that it doesn't allow for using a lens cap when the hood is on.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just visited B&H to compare with Sensei and... Looking for hoods for my Canon 10X42 IS binos. The Sensei 52mm cost lesss than 10 dollars, and are equal to B&Ws in build, look, quality. Also, the #960 B&W are too long and cut down on your field of vision and cut down on your objective lens percentage of light gathering ability due to depth of hoods tubes. Buy the Sensei's!
