Zoom SSH-6 Reviews

Best used outdoors...

The new Zoom Essential series of 32-bit float recorders won't accept this mic and the others in this series. I bought this mic and an H6 Black Edition as a lateral upgrade as I don't need 32-bit floating-point resolution. So now if my H5 dies, my Zoom capsule mic investment is safe for a few more years. The H6 with the included XYH-6 mic is selling for 189.00 (3/24), so for a little more than the price of this mic (which I just bought) I got another quality Zoom capsule mic with a supposedly better recorder attached... This SSH-6 shotgun mic lets you capture focused sound ahead of you with ambience for outdoor/nature sound capture. Indoors you can use this for crisp voice recordings in mono-mode, in side-stereo mode you'll hear a lot of room reflections. A Don King-style hairy windscreen is included. You'll need to purchase a foam screen separately. This is the last proprietary connection mic I'll buy. Zoom Corp hooked me. Darn them...

Great Mic

I was shocked at how well this mic worked on my Zoom Camera. I didn't think it was going to be bad, but the sound quality is great!

question

The exact diameter and length of the mic isn't listed. I'm trying to find a foam screen for this mic. I'm aware the mic comes with a windscreen. Can anyone help me out?
Asked by: Paul
The Zoom SSH-6 has a 1 diameter. It is also about 6 long. The Auray WSF-2216 (B&H # AUWSF2216) is currently the best available option. It is a bit longer than 6 , which means you will probably have to cut it slightly to fit the microphone.

question

Can we mix the directional shotgun mono with the stereo ambience in post? Or is the mix embedded into the audio track as set on the device?
Asked by: Drew K.
The mix will be a mid-side stereo track. You would need mid-side decoder plug-in software to separate the mono mic and the bi-directional mic stereo track in post production.

Will this mic fit in the skb 1209 case? I read here that it won't due to its longer length compared to the other model shotgun mic
Asked by: David
The SKB iSeries Waterproof Case for Zoom H6 Recorder and Mic Modules available on our site is customized to fit the Zoom SGH-6 Shotgun Microphone which is slightly smaller than the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone.

does the SSH-6 require phantom power?

does the SSH-6 require phantom power?
Asked by: William
No idea, but as long as you connect it to a Zoom audio module like the F1 (the one I have), etc... it will be powered. This is for sure not a stand alone mic. It is designed to be used on capsule compatible zoom recorders. Not your question but let me tell you this thing is amazing ! Cheers.

question

which one is best zoom ssh-6 or zoom sgh-6 ? if ssh-6, can i use only directional separately if i don,t want the ambience sound?
Asked by: Simon H.
If you listen to comparison reviews, you realize that the SSH-6 has a much better sound quality, even when recording in mono. The SGH-6 is a rubbish microphone, with one of the worst sound qualities I've ever heard, it's a mic that you can buy as a start pack with the F1 and no more. The SSH-6, on the other hand, is a really great microphone, comparable with e.g. Azden SMX-30 and even better than the Röde Videomic Pro, in my opinion.
