Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The B+W #960 metal telephoto lens hood is made of black-anodized aluminum with light-absorbing flat black ribs on the inside, and due to it's cylindrical shape this hood is especially suited for telephoto lenses.

67mm Screw-In Metal Telephoto Lens Hood #960 is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Surprisingly Inconsistent with B+W's other lens hoods Ive been buying B+W accessories since the 1980s and have always appreciated their excellent craftsmanship and value for the money. Their 67mm lens hood is no exception (it is indeed well crafted) but my two-star rating is based on my major disappointment with the hoods design, usefulness and performance. The attached photograph shows my B+W 77mm lens hood on the left, with my recently purchased 67mm lens hood on the right. The first important difference is that the 77mm hood is threaded for 77mm, allowing filters to be attached to the far end of the hood as well as being able to use the 77mm lens cap, as shown in the photo. The 67mm hood (on the right) is not threaded at all, and is in fact is larger than 67mm the photo shows how a B+W 67mm filter falls right into it! The (now useless) 67mm lens cap is in the background. The second and less important difference is that the 77mm hood has a matte black finish while the 67mm hood has a black satin finish. While this is an aesthetically more pleasing look, the standard matte finish is definitely superior in reducing stray light and thus optically preferable. My disappointment is based on the expectation that B+Ws 960-series lens hoods are consistent in design and performance, and this 67mm lens hood is clearly not. I will be contacting B&H shortly to discuss returning this item and replacing it with a Heliopan equivalent. In deference to B+W, this is the very first time in over 30 years that I have been disappointed with one of their products; they have always been top-notch. This disappointment could have been easily avoided if B+W had clearly stated that their 67mm lens hood does not accept 67mm filters nor 67mm lens caps.
