In regard to focusing, a DC autofocus motor realizes fast and quiet performance and is accentuated by the Quick-Shift Focus System for changing between AF and MF control by simply turning the focusing ring. Additionally, a removable, rotating tripod collar is included with the lens for more even balance when shooting atop a tripod.

One of the most versatile zoom ranges, this 70-200mm lens provides a 105-300mm equivalent focal length range when used with Pentax APS-C DSLRs.
A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture delivers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and is particularly beneficial to creating shallow depth of field imagery.
Extra-low dispersion glass elements are incorporated within the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and produce high image clarity with edge-to-edge sharpness.
High Definition (HD) and Aero Bright coatings have been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting in order to deliver greater contrast and color fidelity. Additionally, a Super Protect (SP) coating also helps to protect the surface of exposed elements from fingerprints, water, dust, and oils and also makes the front and rear elements easier to clean.
A Direct Current (DC) autofocus motor benefits from an internal focusing design and delivers fast, smooth, and quiet focusing performance.
The Quick-Shift Focus System allows you to first use autofocus to acquire general focus on a subject, then instantly refine your focus position manually without the need for an AF/MF selector.
A focus range limiter allows you to constrain the lens' focus range between different sets of distances for faster performance and greater responsiveness.
The weather-resistant construction utilizes 13 distinct seals to prevent moisture or dust from entering the lens.
A removable, rotating tripod collar is included with the lens for better balance when shooting atop a tripod.

Love this lens paired with my K1, I use it for kid sports and landscapes

This is a really well built and beautiful lens. I expected the weight and with a battery grip also on the K-1 it is a heavy kit. Although I haven’t used it much yet I expect to get plenty of use this year. It is very sharp where expected and pretty nice at 2.8. A bit of money but a much better lens than the now not made anymore Sigma 70-200 I bought a few years ago. Sure wish I had this one for the trip out west in 2018.

Superb glass, heavy

Excellent image quality and build. I hate heavy gear but will carry this around on my K-1 MII for hours when the shooting is good. Really even, sharp images at 70mm, fully open aperture. It is all about the light: f/2.8 combo with K1's low light performance (image stabilization for longer exposures + great sensitivity in shadows) means increased shooting opportunities in natural settings, with wide depth of field control and bokeh for portraiture and still life. The weather sealing gives me peace of mind to shoot in bad weather. One star off because of weight, but to get the good optics and durable build, it is probably necessary. First Image is uncropped, handheld (against tree), LR contrast and monochrome added, saved as JPG in PS. Second image is raw as shot at 200mm.

Superlative lens, I love it...

When I bought this lens, a year or so ago I did not imagine how useful it would be. It is a beast in all situations in which one demands it. Impressive in portraits, landscapes and sports. If the photos do not look better it's because you need to master the camera better but the lens is always up to what is expected of it. The sharpness is beautiful and the bokeh too, for me it is fast enough in the speed of focus and never, never disappoints me. The only problem is its weight but I bought it knowing the detail. The best pictures I have taken, according to the people who have seen them, coincide with the ones I have made with this lens. My camera is a K1. I think that before deciding to spend more money on other artifacts, you have to master what you have and make the camera and the lens obey you and not the other way around. With this lens my photos have been progressively improving and I do not get tired of seeing the quality of the images that can be obtained if you manage to master it enough. It is a tremendous ally if there is little light and you know the camera enough. Without a doubt, if I had to choose my favorite lens is this total beast. I love it absolutely

This is a wonderful lens, heavy but worth it. The IQ is pin sharp and the build quality is excellent. Buying through B&H was a breeze, and getting international shipping was as simple as a couple of button clicks. Highly recommend both.

When purchasing this lens I knew I was only getting the best. Best quality. Sharpest images. Weather sealed! The whole nine! This lens is one of the best lenses that Pentax has produced. No malfunctions. Auto focus is nice and quick. Weight is a bit hefty but its Pentax. Go big or go home

So nice!

Great FA type 70-200mm Lens with fast f/2.8 f-stop and an amazing lens coating. Great build quality and functions perfectly. Works well with new DSLR and older Pentax cameras since it has the same Pentax FA type mount and contacts. Perfect for shooting at a bit of a distance. Great lens that Pentax needed in their line-up!

question

How was your experience for using it on Pentax 645z camera?
Asked by: Bobby
While 645z is a Pentax DSLR camera, too, the lens is designed for Pentax K DSLRs, i.e. recent APS-C cameras and a FF K-1). The lens is not compatible with 645z.

does either focusing or zooming change the length of the lens?

The lens would offer internal focus and zoom, which would not change the length of the lens.

question

I really love my K3 and do pet photography with it. I need a good zoom that's quick on AF. The Pentax smc PENTAX-DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 ED (IF) SDM Lens just doesn't autofocus quickly enough. The web page for this new Pentax 70-200 says The Quick-Shift Focus System allows you to first use autofocus to acquire general focus on a subject, then instantly refine your focus position manually without the need for an AF/MF selector. Is this Pentax again not being able to pinpoint focus the way Canon, Nikon, Tamron and Sigma seem capable of, or do we have a genuine capability here for instant lock on moving objects equivalent to say the Tamron 70-200?
Asked by: Anonymous
Well, Pentax AF is not that fast and accurate. DFA 70-200 is twice slower than Nikon and Canon 70-200 base on the test. AF-C is still not possible for accurate and sharp images. If you are a fast user, then Pentax is not your camera.
