Westcott 5900 overview

  • 1Description

The Westcott Ice Light 2 LED light is an enhanced version of its predecessor built on the wish lists of photographers in the field. As their first order of business, Westcott made the light 50% brighter while maintaining its 21.6 x 7.5" form factor and rendering color-accurate output with a very high CRI of 96. Ten-step dimming is accessed via the unit's handle which has a built-in digital display. The light also has a USB port and built-in Bluetooth technology for future wireless control. For videographers, Westcott has doubled their efforts to produce a truly flicker-free fixture.

A removable Lithium-ion battery is yet another Ice Light 2 refinement. A 2.5-hour charge gives you 60+ minutes of runtime with the convenience of being able to charge a backup battery outside of the fixture. You can also double your runtime by attaching an optional power pack battery extension. It uses the same charger as the Ice Light 2. Like Its predecessor, the Ice Light 2 is virtually heat-free. Hold it as close as you want to your subject; the closer you get the more Ice Light's wrap-around quality of light becomes evident. Since it's virtually heat-free you never have to worry about injuring the talent or damaging the set.

While the ergonomic shape easily lends itself to handheld operation, the Ice Light 2 has a 1/4"-20 tap at each end of it for mounting it to a light stand or other accessory. The Ice Light 2 comes with gel clips, a tungsten-balanced gel filter, 2-way connector, a battery, 100-240 VAC power supply/charger, car charger, cord storage bag and a carry case with shoulder and belt straps.

Ice Light 2 LED Light is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 61.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from You're a Filmmaker on the road, then GET IT! Its Amazing I am traveling a lot as a filmmaker and these lights are just the perfect lighting gear for me. I will recommend it to anyone out there, photographers or filmmakers. It is perfect for controlled and uncontrolled environments, you just turn them on and start rolling, no need to worry about finding a plugging outlet or anything. The light on the skin is just amazing. (Make sure to buy extra batteries if your budget allows you to do so, it still runs for 50-60min but it doesn't hurt to be safe with extra batteries) Love this product

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ice Light 2 light readings Just received the Ice Light II. The following info is info I looked all over for but couldn't find. Hope it's useful. You can find great example photos/video using these lights but brightness is a concern for some users. I think the bottom line here is that these lights would have been totally useless in the film age, but with the advent off low noise sensors able to produce low noise at high ISO these lights should prove quite useful. I've read concerns about inadvertently turning these lights on in the case while traveling. After using these lights, that's a valid concern. I won't be transporting these lights in their case with the batteries installed in the units. Not really a concern. They are easily removable and stored in your camera bag. These readings were incident readings with the Konica Minolta Auto Meter V Light to subject distance 2ft ISO 400 250/2.0 ISO 1250 125/5.6 250/4.0 ISO 2500 250/5.6 ISO 3200 250/5.6 3

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Game changer I work in wedding videography. 9 times out of 10, the wedding coordinator shuts down 95% of the light at a reception to 'enhance the mood' Fine, let her. I have the ICE LIGHT! This thing can light up an entire room ... if you want it to. With it's 20 levels of light intensity you can make it very dim, or super bright, and use it to bounce off ceilings to avoid blinding people. I used to use some LED light thing on top of my camera, but now I will only have to bring that as a backup. I know it's several hundred dollars, but I am serious... worth it all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Too Expensive, but really good at what it does Like everyone else, I thought and still do think the Westcott Ice Lights are overpriced, so I waited for knockoffs to hit the market. I purchased the Bestlight by Neewer (Genaray SpectroLED SP-LR Light with a different name) for less than the price of the Westcott. However, I ended up returning the Neewer and getting the Ice Light 2. The Neewer is brighter and has a separate tungsten panel, but that is where the good stuff ends. The Neewer's light was harsh and it has a super strong magenta tint, it required three ROSCO gels (+1/2 green, +1/4 blue and diffuser) to correct the color and tone down the harshness. After the gels, the light was now weaker than the Ice Light, so now I had a weaker light with a DIY look. As bad as this was, I was still saving $$$ so I was still on the fence, until I noticed that the light flickered in the lower power settings, and occasionally turned off by itself, after this there was no question it was going back. So what about the Ice Light 2? I knew before buying what to expect, it is not anywhere near as strong a speedlight, it is not a soft as a giant softbox, forget about shooting 100 ISO in complete darkness with the subject 12' away. I bought this light to slightly boost ambient light, fill in eye sockets, and to use creatively. At this, the Westcott Ice Light 2 excels. The Kelvin is just shy of daylight and it has zero tint, skin looks vibrant and it does not bring out every scar in the skin like the Neewer. However, there are two things I would like to see in the Ice Light 3, make the USB plug less cumbersome, have a lower power output for when I want a very slight touch, and I'll mention a third, a lower price! Product is 5/5, it's overpriced but I will not knock the score for that, I knew that going in. It is not going to replace my studio lights or even speedlights, but it will add another tool to my arsenal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wish I didn't wait so long to get these I bought the set of 2 Ice Light 2 LED wands, and like the headline says, I wish I didn't wait so long to get them. It's so cool to have a set extremely portable daylight balanced continuous light sources wherever I go. Clamshell lighting is a breeze. But what I really like is being able to put a sliver of light wherever I want it by snapping on the barn doors. I do mysterious boudoir photography, so this option is a wonderful addition to my kit. These babies weren't cheap, but they are rock solid. They feel like professional equipment, not toys. I'm pretty hard on my equipment, and these will keep up with me for some time to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love what you can do with this There are so many cheaper ones out there but I decided to buy two of these. The build quality is great. The look that you get is sweet, if you know how to use it. I like the look of it and the way everything just works. Nice packaging too. When you shoot video, there's no flicker in the light. But know that this light is not powerful enough to overpower the sun in daylight shooting. You'll need powerful strobes for that. I find it great as fill light outside but you have to be really close and on full power. Indoors, on the other hand, they're awesome.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Definite improvement from V1 except for one thing... I use this indoors or outside when it's dark. Great things is that it is a little brighter than v1. One thing I do not like is the dedicated on/off switch which can at times turn on and drain the battery. I shot a wedding this past weekend, icelight was charged up ready-to-go. When i pulled it out at the reception for the cake cutting, it was completely dead! Luckily I had a spare....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't buy one. Buy two. Absolutely incredible light control. Night time portrait shots are a snap (as long as you have an extra set of hands or choose to carry an extra light stand). I have always had issues with understanding where light from your flash will fall and how strong it is. Ice Light gives you total, instant control. Expensive, yes. Worth the cost. Absolutely
